introduction:
Water harvesting louvres, shown in their three positions: älvgalleriet My thesis project is a floating art gallery in Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city. This project started off by my newfound interest in generative design and parametrics. Whilst my plan for the thesis was always a public building for my hometown of Gothenburg, I now wanted to use it as a platform to explore different ways for myself to design. A portion of the process was therefore to learn and/ or revisit tools such as Grasshopper and Processing. Harvesting. The visual qualities I pursued were: -juxtaposition of form: flowing versus rigid, -layers/transparency. Contrast between rigid and flowing shown in facade detail. Finally, going back to my third-year dissertation, I have always had an interest in "vernacularity", not necessarily in the way of the material of a building but rather in the sense of belonging and reflecting its surroundings in some way. I believe that a good design is able to interact with its site. Hence, I decided to analyse the climate and other characteristics of the city as part of my design process. Open. Angular interior framewor to use as base for the flowing big gestures of the interior. Generated texture, inspired by the analysis of a barnacle colony. Closed.
creating a new presence
design analysis:
c i t y m e e t i n g the river The main body of water is the Gota River. It has for many years been a link for trade, industry and transport. To be able to sustain those functions, many parts of the river fronts were home to industrial wharfs, ship yards etc. This resulted in the city's current disconnection to its waterfronts, which is something the city has large ambitions to change. The two images below show current changes made to bring the city's inhabitants closer to the water.
typological contrasts & layers of gothenburg soon to come älvsborgsbron industrial heritage north-west (hisingen) I looked at the city's typology around the river to establish which visual qualities I want to pursue: I discovered that in the foreground one sees the large orange cranes, the industrial wharfs and the two bridges tying the city together. In the background, lower buildings from the turn of the century, some with maritime history, others, like the Opera, inspired by it. However, what's now a familiar sight will soon be contrasted by new, contemporary things: in the North, a new city part, Scandinavia's tallest building, and a cable car line are on the horizon. The south will also have a new skyline. The typology layers and the coming additions inspired me to work with contrast, layers and opacity as the main visual themes of this project. south-east (city) leisure and culture typology of the city further in-land soon to come
gothenburg s interaction with rain and water It rains on average every third day in Gothenburg. And the heavy percipitation will only increase with the climate change. Therefore Gothenburg is investing in becoming a world-leading rain city. Partly by building a sustainable city that can handle the large amounts of rain but also by connecting back to the wish of the residents to come closer to water in all its forms and take advantage of the rains possibility to give unique experiences. I believe that a building that interacts with wind and rain fits today's narrative.
w i n d The diagrams on the right show the direction, frequency and speed of the wind occurring on my site. judging from the analysis, the most common wind directions are generally from the southwest (considering how seldom it snows in gothenburg in a year). However, there is a variety of wind on site that should be accounted for in my design. Furthermore, the diagrams underline how seldom there is a lack of wind (less than 1% in all conditions), which means that precipitation always falls in an angle. Wind analysis diagrams from the SMHI station at Måseskär (56km north of Gothenburg) QR code to real-time wind conditions in Gothenburg
barnacle I looked at a resident of the region, the barnacle. It fits the narrative of changing water levels as it lives on the waterline on rocks and objects that are semi-submerged in water. The crustacean is an interesting mechanism, permanently attaching itself to a surface and passively feeding on plankton by stretching out it's feet to form a net. It can also seal its shell once out of water and survive extended periods of time. I used it as a reference for my water harvesting facade.

göta älv: To help me determine the position of my proposal, I analysed Gothenburg as a city and some of the region s properties at a larger scale. In the city, I looked at its relationship to the Göta river: I looked at cul tural buildings/ places, accessibility to waterfronts, new developments and the ferry route which runs on the river. The conclusion of the research was as follows: because of the city s industrial shipping & production history, many of the waterfronts are still inaccessible to residents, either because of still active transport routes or industrial remains. This is mostly affecting the Hisingen side (as seen on the two panoramas below the map). The inaccessibility is something the city tries to address by developing large portions of the land around those areas: new neighbourhoods that activate the waterfront, a new bridge & a cable car line are all on the horizon.
1: eriksbergs hamn An area with industrial history that has been converted in the early 00 s. The proposal would be placed on the river boardwalk, which has several restaurants and the remake of the historical Osthindienfararen ship. 3: magasinet, JÄRNTORGET Järntorget, with its proximity to the restaurants, inght-life and already existant cultural presence could be a good fit. In addition, the area north-east of it will be redeveloped and bring more people to the riverfront.
5: stenpiren /1 The site shown is on one end of a famous riverwalk, which takes the visitors through museums, a casino, the marina and finishes beside the Gothenburg opera house. 7: gullbergsvass Gullbergsvass is currently an office area. However there are plans to mix it with a bit more residential and ecourage more visitors to the riverfront.
2: lindholmen science park Lindholmen science park is the tech-centre of the city, hosting highschools, universities and offices for tech companies. It is connected to the city by the älvsnabben boat transfer across the river. The existing docks would make a good fit for my proposal. 4: FRIHAMNEN
6: bananpiren Bananpiren is part of the development of Frihamnen, which is currently split into 3 stages. Until its rebuild, it serves as an event space. The current lease is until : stenpiren /2 The west side of Stenpiren, by the area of Rosenlund can also be a good spot. The floating parking house to the right of my proposal has been towed up the river and the area will be redeveloped. It is currently already home to an urban beach.

With its close proximity to central göteborg and views over the river, I find it being suitable for a focal building. bananpiren is part of the development of frihamnen, which is currently split into 3 stages. Until its rebuild, it serves as an event space. the current lease is until the west side of stenpiren, by the area of rosenlund can also be a good area.
