10 COVER STORY IN JANUARY 1979, one week after Normalization between China and the US, architect John "Jack" C. Portman III went with the Portman delegation to Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou to investigate real estate development opportunities in China. A few months later Deng Xiao Ping visited the United States and one of his stops was Atlanta. Deng stayed at the Peachtree Plaza Hotel, which was owned and designed by Portman. Deng gave a luncheon address to the Atlanta business community and met with Mr. John Portman II, Jack s father. In that speech, Portman recalls, Deng was very expressive and confident in extolling his optimism regarding the growth and future of China. Just a few months later, Portman was back in China, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become one of the earliest and most successful East-West joint ventures. As celebrates its 25 th Anniversary, Portman shares his memories of that special time, as well as his reflections on the future of Shanghai as an international city, and the ongoing relevance of. 11 What were your first impressions of Shanghai? Shanghai in 1979 was a step back in time. Streets were narrow and followed no geometric grid. Trees created linear caverns, with limbs and leaves overhanging the sun-sheltered streets, and streetlights had this soft, dull, amber light, which bordered on mystical. It was the 1940 s. Nothing had changed over all those years. Few cars on the street, hordes of bicycles, and everybody wearing blue or grey, no color whatsoever and all was quite quiet..compared with today! What was on the spot where now stands? The location on which stands today was the Xinhua News Agency, a five-story brick house that Xinhua used as their headquarters. It was directly across the street from the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, whose management arranged for the allocation of that site to us by acquiring this land and becoming our partner. is one of the city s older modern era buildings, yet it seems to have aged very gracefully over the years. Why do you think that is so? continues to live in its timeless manner, focusing on the functional aspects of how people live, addressing the qualities which people require and enjoy in their lifestyles of today. It is the comfortable spatial qualities of the environment and, most importantly, how people relate to the variation and orchestration of our spaces in general, which attract our customers year after year. People love being in Shanghai Centre! The building is iconic yet quite simple, a combination of Chinese and Western cultural influences designed to embrace a global audience.to be, relevant internationally, while being locally indigenous. How much of the design was your own inspiration, versus what the Shanghai government requested or envisioned? The Shanghai Government always has influence on everything being built. This was early 1981 and we were the first mixed-use project in Shanghai. Shanghai needed everything: hotels, offices, shopping and residential. Our first design was shelved because it was only a hotel. John Portman envisioned a combined design concept which incorporated all uses; and this is what was built. The government suggested that we add housing. We did, and the housing was, and is, the most successful aspect of the development. Because of our experience, the Shanghai Municipal Government allowed us to initiate the creative direction, but they certainly did make valuable contributions to the process. The mutual cooperation and trust which was experienced during this nine year process still exists today, a testament to Portman s 35 years in China. How do you rank compared to the other projects you have done around the world? Obviously we are proud of the many projects around the world on which we have worked but none were born of such never-to-happen-again circumstances. Shanghai Centre remains perhaps one of the most influential developments of our company because of the place and time China 1980 s. Portman was the first foreign developer in Shanghai. Was this luck or foresight? Luck and timing is always a part of every success. Portman was THERE, in Shanghai! If we weren t THERE we would not have been lucky. Thus, it shows foresight in being there in China. It also shows our ability to understand and to anticipate "SHANGHAI CENTRE REPRESENTS THE DYNAMIC SPIRIT AND GROWTH OF CHINA" market demand, thereby creating one of the most successful real estate developments anywhere, and it remains so, due to its development, design and management, as one of the most preeminent projects of Shanghai. China was awakening; Portman was present for this historic beginning. China knew very little about real estate markets and Portman knew very little about China. So, it was a peaceful and useful marriage, because together, in this beginning, we were able to realize our dream through trusting cooperation, because alone, neither of us could have been as successful. Shanghai will rank at the top of the future cities of the world, and represents the dynamic spirit and growth of China. It will be considered the prime address for decades to come. What other Portman projects are in Shanghai? Portman has built in twelve Chinese cities, but we are certainly most active in Shanghai. Other completed Portman projects in Shanghai include:tomorrow Square, on Nanjing Road, adjacent to People s Square and People s Park, and includes a JW Marriott hotel and serviced apartments. The Bund Center, Westin Hotel is a mixed use development consisting of residential, hotel and office uses and is owned by Mr. Elijah Widjaja.The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund is a seamless combination of a historic club building and a new guestroom tower connected by restaurant amenity spaces topped with a multi-level terraced courtyard. In Xuhui, at the intersection of Jian Guo Road West and Yue Yang Road, Portman created the Jian Ye Li residential complex. In Hongqiao, Portman designed the Jin Hongqiao International Center, also known as the Shanghai Arch and Arch Walk. It is a development consisting of retail and office. For Shanghai Expo, we have designed four hotels and a shopping complex which is under construction presently. Most recently, Portman has entered into a partnership union with Zhong Wei, a Shanghai based real estate development company, to design and develop BA DAI TOU, a mixed-used development of two million square meters located in Yangpu District. The project will be built in phases over the next eight to ten years. The Management will work with us providing the quality and services for which they are known. BA DAI TOU will set new standards for mixed-use development. What does the future hold for Portman in China? Portman has over three decades of devotion to China, and, as a family company, this commitment will continue for many generations to come. 11

12 events recap SMASH SUMMER BBQ BASH What a party! The weather-gods forced us to move the Resident Summer BBQ bash inside but that didn t temper the atmosphere. A record number of residents enjoyed the band performances by Studio 188 and FSE, and the amazing food! There was a ton of entertainment for the kids as well as a lucky draw with fantastic prizes. ROOFTOP YOGA FANATICS To celebrate the first anniversary of the lululemon showroom at, the team invited some of the best local yoga instructors for four sessions of Rooftop Yoga at the 7F Terrace Garden. There is no better place to stretch, bend, sweat and get in shape on the weekend! MUSIC GALORE AT THE PLAZA It was a busy but very musical summer at the newly created event touchmedia brought over Children Minority Dance performances and Maison Camus filled the house with Salsa beats with the Salsa classes by Cuban dancer Santos.There was also a French music workshop and performances during Fete de la Musique. Topping it off were two days of live music, with no less than 12 local and international bands at the BoosKaBaash Music Festival. Clean air is a right not a privilege Clean air is a right, not a privilege. This is the sentiment behind the push to improve China s air quality, and ultimately raise the standard of living. At APAC this year, two of the world s largest polluters made commitments to drastically improve air quality over the next 20 years. However, there are many things that we can do now to take a proactive approach in improving the air in our homes. For example, many people are unaware that much of the indoor pollution in our homes comes from the pipes in our bathrooms and kitchens. By closing bathroom doors, plugging sinks, and covering shower drains when not in use, uncomfortable smells and volatile organic compounds (VOC s) are reduced. More things we can do: Close windows. It s very common in offices and homes in China to minimize AC usage and promote airflow by opening windows. Unfortunately, the majority of days in China are above the 70AQI standard set by the WHO. Clean AC units. AC units collect dust and can grow mold. Mold spores are then injected into the room and increase allergy reactions in sensitive people. Change HEPA filters. Most residents in Shanghai are aware that the only true way to take control of the air quality in your home and office is to use an air purifier with HEPA filter. It is recommended to change filters every 6 months, but in Shanghai it can be as soon as 3 or 4 months depending on use and pollution levels. Assess air quality. This year both the Caterpillar and the Butterfly age groups ran a six week summer camp program filled with arts & crafts, story-telling, gym classes and exciting outings. How to Prevent Myopia Progression in Children by Zhou Peng, Ophthalmologist During summer vacation, ParkwayHealth Ophthalmology Clinic sees many children every day with eye-sight problems. Myopia is something every parent is concerned about. As long as parents understand basic prevention tips, they are able to best guide their children in the care of their eyes. Effective methods to prevent the progression of myopia? 1. Get a professional eye specialist to do vision checks to ensure accuracy. Too many children have been misdiagnosed. 2. Wearing full-correction glasses. Full-correction means to fully correct myopia without lowering the number of degrees. For example, if one needs glasses of 200 degrees, then he/she shall wear glasses of 200 degrees other than reduced to 150 degrees (lowering degree is an old method, which has been proven to accelerate the progression of myopia). 3. Use mydriatics every night (eye drops containing extremely low concentration of atropine). This is the most important advances in the field of international myopia prevention and treatment in recent five years, which is effective for 70% of children, slowing the progression of myopia within 25 degrees per year. 4. Outdoor activities. This is a key priority! In recent years, a large number of domestic and foreign researches have shown that outdoor activities may well prevent the progression of myopia. In ParkwayHealth s Department of Ophthalmology, we find that incidence of myopia and extent of progression in children attending international schools is significantly lower than children attending local schools, which is directly related to more time for outdoor activities in international schools. Outdoor activities play two roles. Firstly, in the outdoors, children have opportunities to see things in a very long distance and the eye muscles can fully relax.
