40 From: Riviera Hotel Sent: 05 May :38 PM To: Nkululeko Ngcobo Cc: Hoosen Moolla; Wendy GibsonTaylor; 'Darlene Menzies'; 'Beare Holdings' Subject: FW: Grime and Security in Durban CBD Importance: High Dear Nkululeko, Since the Priority Zone staff cuts in mid april there has already been some deteriation in the cleaning and security in the CBD and in particular there has been an influx of vagrants and I have received a number of calls from local traders,residents and owners.i appreciate that there have been holidays and that Metro staff,both cleaning and Police may have been short staffed.it is however alarming that the progress of nearly 2 years looks set to be wiped out in a few weeks and the prospect of slum conditions looms large. Sorry to report these conditions as per example of attached photo.i am liasing with various parties and will keep you advised.i have copied your colleagues and any suggestions and support would be appreciated. I have just been reading about the successes being achieved in Johburg CBD,especially Juta Street in Braamfontein and New Town Centre now being extended to Hillbrow. I have seen how these and the upgrades in Capetown (Long St)have rejuvenated the areas.???????? Kind Regards Peter

Make me hopeful that someone somewhere cares about the citizens of Durban. City Manager, Sibusiso Sithole, said the Urban Management Zone (UMZ) security guards do not carry any firearms and they form part of the City s on going Urban Renewal Programme. Sithole also mentioned that currently, the guards cover the inner City from Botanic Gardens, down Che Guevara Road, Warwick Junction, Albert Park, Margaret Mncadi Avenue, CBD and Central, Point, Adddington Back of Beachfront and Sandile Thusi Road. We are also investigating the financial implications of expanding the project to other key business areas, including Pinetown, Isipingo, Umlazi and Tongaat, said Sithole.
