5 Preface Transport is one of the most important factors determining the economic development of each country. The implementation of each transport process, both passengers and goods transport, is carried out using transport networks and complementing them with various types of infrastructure. Contemporary technical and technological development, dynamics of changes in the modern world, complexity of road infrastructure as well as the ever-growing mobility of contemporary society provide favourable conditions for designing innovative transport-related solutions. Consequently, activities in the field of transport networks and systems require new decisions which are continuously made with regard to planning, organization, management and traffic control. These decisions entail the necessity of seeking increasingly efficient solutions, undertaking numerous multifaceted activities aimed at meeting the current needs of the society as well as, above all, they determine the directions of development of transport networks and traffic engineering. The book, entitled Directions of development of transport networks and traffic engineering, provides an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the latest trends of research in the field of transport networks and systems, achievements and perspectives for development of these networks, both in Poland and in other countries of the world. In addition, the subjects of the presented works also allow to become familiar with the challenges and innovative directions of research and development in the field of traffic engineering. The book has been divided into four parts. They are as follows: Part 1. Human Factors in Traffic Engineering, Part 2. Directions of Improvement in Transport Systems, Part 3. Traffic Engineering as Support for Development of Transport Networks and Systems, Part 4. Modelling Tools in Service of Development of Traffic Engineering. The publication contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 15th Scientific and Technical Conference Transport Systems. Theory and Practice, organized by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the v

6 vi Preface Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology (Katowice, Poland). The topics addressed in the book include the current problems of transport networks and systems, among other subjects discussed. With reference to numerous practical examples, various novel solutions determining the directions of development of transport networks and traffic engineering have been proposed in the publication. They are considered to exert significant influence on increasing the functional efficiency of transport networks and systems, and their priorities include well-being and health of people, traffic safety, sustainable development of transport systems and protection of natural environment. Accordingly, a part of the book also relates to the problems associated with human factors in traffic engineering. Moreover papers also deals with modelling and simulation tools in service of development of traffic engineering were also included in the presented volume. We would like to use this occasion to express our gratitude to the authors for the papers they have submitted and their substantial contribution to the display directions of development and the multiple challenges facing transport networks and traffic engineering in the contemporary world as well as for rendering the results of their research and sharing the scientific work. We would also like to thank the reviewers for their insightful remarks and suggestions which have ensured the high quality of the publication.
