5 Preface Transport systems constantly require development, which may include among others infrastructural, organizational or legal character. Corrective actions implemented on the macroscale in smart cities are targeted mainly for the implementation of an efficient, cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly transport. One of the directions of development of modern transport systems is integration, which supports both the transport of people and loads. Advanced intelligent communication systems make it easy to change the means of transport during a trip planning process. Similarly, advanced and complex models provide support for calculation and optimization of supply chains, also according to the pro-ecological criterion. This publication contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 15th Scientific and Technical Conference Transport Systems. Theory and Practice (TSTP2018) organized by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology in Katowice, Poland. The problems addressed in the book entitled Integration as Solution for Advanced Smart Urban Transport Systems have been divided into four parts: Part 1. The latest achievements of intelligent transport systems, Part 2. Advanced data collecting, analysis and intelligent support for decisionmaking, Part 3. Modelling, optimization and evaluation in smart transport, Part 4. Integrated urban passenger and freight transport. The articles included in the publication are expressions of case study-based scientific and practical approach to the problems of contemporary transport systems. The proposed methods and models enable a system approach to assess current solutions. In turn, implementation proposals may support the improvement of the integrity of individual elements of transport systems, and thus increase its effectiveness on the global scale. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all authors, for reflecting the key problems of contemporary transport systems in a concise manner, as well as to reviewers, in recognition of their insightful remarks and suggestions without which this collection of papers would have never been published.
