8 International student competition/tender 2007 /2008 The competition: Quarry with a new function Mariánka Motto: To plan future means to create the presence. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Competition assignment A. Why this topic? The quarry locality has played an important role at the topic selection. The quarry presents and exciting challenge for architects because of its extreme conditions for construction of any type. In case that a mix of sports and relaxation, culture and social functions is supposed to be a content of the quarry utilization, so it is a challenge for us. If such sports and recovery functions for particular quarries in Marianka are determined in the Territory plan of the municipality and up to now they do not serve to this purpose, it is also a helping hand to the municipality that tries hard to prevent the quarry from being a waste dump. It is obvious that no return to stone extraction is desirable in the quarry. B. Town-planning relations, construction site The municipality of Marianka near the town of Bratislava, the oldest pilgrim s place in Slovakia, during socialism ignored a bit, at present more and more showing the world its exceptionality. It is the place that is admired not only by the Slovaks but also by hundreds of Austrian, Hungarian tourists and pilgrims. As it is situated only 15 km from Bratislava, people from Bratislava the young, whole families and the old ones, come to spend their free time (ramblers, cycletourists) in beautiful scenery of the countryside. It is situated close to the Protected Landscape Area, there are educational, tourists and cycle routes/tracks (directions to Borinka, Kačín, Malý Slavín and many others). From Marianka Valley, with calming magic and sacred atmosphere, about 600 m of the road through the forest, you get over a smaller altitude and then you enter a narrowing valley with a stream called Mariansky potok and two retired quarries. In the vicinity of the smaller one of two quarries with water area there finishes a villa construction site called Panský les (Lord s Forest). About 20 m to the north of it there is a higher and more spacious quarry as a whole with terrace-like bounces. C. Main assignments of the competition/tender The topic of the idea competition is itself adrenaline. It offers solutions how to give both quarries back to people and nature and to show what different activities can hide under the term of sports, recovery and fun. In Marianka, there are a lot of localities with detached houses under construction at present. Now the time has come to take care of their inhabitants and visitors, to offer to pilgrims, tourists, cyclists, and the young and old people, families with children various types of sports and recovery utilities. 1. To apply the regional particularities of the village and the countryside to the closed scale of the projected objects, in use of ecological building materials as well as alternative energy sources for the area construction and operation. 2. In the smaller quarry with water area, which belongs to the IRC area of Pansky Les (Lord s Forest), there should prevail a function of temporary staying - a hotel apartment type. In the other more spacious quarry, which serves as a dump at present, it is suitable to focus on sports, recovery, relax or culture functions. 3. All the proposed/projected objects shall be localized considering the border of the Protected Landscape Area of Male Karpaty marked in the situation plan: Into the horizontal territory limited with the rock ledges of the quarries; Into the space of the slope ledges of the quarries, as hanging or hung objects (the smaller quarry for reasons of better strength of the rock walls); 8
9 To the road leading between two quarries; Onto the terraces of the bigger quarry. 4. In addition to the selected objects it is necessary to solve urban planning of the defined locality: main access road shall pass by villa houses IRC Pansky Les green car-park areas with capacity adequate to the selected functional use and situated in the area of each quarry, rambler and cycling routes lead within the area between both quarries parallel to the stream of Mariansky Potok and they continue past the big quarry through the terrace-like bounces of the rock slope up to its peak. The rambler and cycling routes continue past the prehistoric Fort (Hradisko) at the top of the hill towards other tourist aims (Stanisko etc.). conception of park and garden 5. Ideovo navrhnúť estetické aj technické možnosti fixácie drobiacej sa skalnej steny veľkého kameňolomu, z dôvodov zvýšenia jeho statickej únosnosti a bezpečnej prevádzky zvolených objektov a aktivít. D. Instead of regulations inspiration for one s own ideas 1. Small or northern quarry with water area An object of a temporary hanging stay is supposed to be in accordance with the territory plan situated into the space of the smaller quarry with the water area (as a part of IRC Pansky Les). a/ Temporary hanging stay with view of water (short-term stay of an apartment type, wellness hotel, guest house, tourist accommodation object a camp for the young people, accommodation for various interest groups e.g. rock climbing school etc.). Accommodation capacity hanging cabins of various standards and categories of 3* to 4 *, serving for weekend, short-term or other recovery staying of people, or for thematic rock-climbing, cycling, hiking (ramblers) with the capacity of 40 beds Reception area Hanging cabins Restaurant with terrace with a capacity of 50 visitors b/ Rock climbing Centre (climbing walls) 2. Big or southern quarry with three terraces is necessary to select and project objects for free time, sports and recovery, adrenaline activities, fun, performances, exhibitions into the space of the big quarry. It is necessary to create a complex of mutually logically functionally connected objects of the following optional inspirations, or to add own ideas into the tender/competition project. a/ observatory tower with the height of app. up to 15 m accessible by stairs or by a Panoramic lift with service area for visitors and with technological base: Entrance area with sanitary facilities and cash desks for various activities and attractions. Fast-food self-service Information pavilion on cycle, hiking routes/tracks, and Educational Path in the Protected Landscape area (CHKO) Male Karpaty, Spaces of rock-climbing school Panoramic lift operation Exhibition area (could be situated in a separate object) b/ multipurpose exhibition or lecture area with necessary base for thematic exhibitions with permanent show of the Protected Landscape Area Male Karpaty and the near Fort. c/ Fast food can be in a separate object or a part of the lift valley station d/ alternative mobile theatre stage For occasional closed events, removable with possibility of its movement and use for pilgrimages and Masses in the Marianske údolie valley, or for culture events on the village place. e/ Bridging the stream of Mariansky potok and connection of the whole area of both quarries....and many other activities and objects according to one s own imagination and consideration. Adrenaline activities for extreme active workout: Bungee jumping Rock-climbing rock-climbing walls for different levels of difficulty (to be situated into the small quarry because rockclimbing has already been executed there now and because of better strength and load capacity of rock walls) Tarzanland with rope bridging and platforms Bobsleigh track Marianska cycle route/track Hiking ramblers Educational path in CHKO Male Karpaty landscape area. The tender/competition is of ideas. In the assignment there is a space left for one s own creative fantasy at projecting other suitable activities in the given environment. 9
10 E. Constructional solution The Projected construction, used materials and method of the object foundation depends on their situation within the area of the The objects can be projected of the YTONG building system elements, or the SILKA lime-sand profilated bricks, or various light construction systems and ecological materials paying attention to the environment of the Protected Landscape Area. Drawings of the construction details shall be not required. F. Infrastructure, energy supply to the territory Close to both quarries there are situated IRC (investment residential construction) Pansky Les (at present in construction), planned water distribution, sewerage, COV (water treatment plant), projected electric cable lines, projected phased construction of gas tubing (everything according to the approved town-planning of Marianka G. Form of processing Documentation shall be solved in the form of the idea proposal of the architectonic study to the extent: Situation of the solved territory town-planning solution of the territory of both quarries and the access road leading parallel to the stream of Mariansky Potok between both quarries including wider relationships and project of static bond, Basic ground plans, sections, and views of all solved objects to the scale necessary for clear presentation of the project processed in maximum 3 sheets of A1 format in height, Visualisations of wider relations of both solved quarries and separate solved objects or the model photo documentation.
