2 o Austria is a democratic republic situated in central Europe. It covers a territory of about square kilometres. Austria has nine provinces including Vienna as its capital. o In 2012 Austria had 8.44 million inhabitants. Demographic forecasts predict that the population will grow to more than nine million by 2030.

3 o Traditionally, Austria has been famous for its culture, especially its music (for composers like Mozart, Haydn, Johann Strauss Jr and Sr) and its empress Sisi. World-renowned music festival like the Salzburger Festspiele carry on that tradition. o Mozartkugeln, Sachertorte or the Lippizaner are internationally well-known items. o Although Austria is a small country it provided to the world a lot of important inventions and discoveries such as psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud), slow motion in movies (August Musger), the Rhesus factor (Karl Landsteiner) or the alkali battery (Karl Kordesch).

4 In 2012 the first conducted worldwide comparison of cities regarding innovation, technology and sustainability listed Vienna as the world s number one Smart City, ahead of Toronto, Paris and New York. Being a smart city means improving the quality of life for the citizens, and the quality of the city as a business location. Smart city Vienna

11 7 Requirements for designing and planning of large-scale urban projects o Concise and identity creating macro structure in regard to the existing surroundings o Identity of quarters, entrances to quarter, quarter s boundaries as sustainable units o Building typologies and utilization ratios, for example in terms of affordable living spaces as well in regard to an aging society; meet the requirements in terms of sustainability, therefore mixed use and social intermixing o Smart access systems and interconnected infrastructure o Vivid ground floors o Free and open spaces as experiential spaces, open to future development, open to different usages o retention capability/ speed of development and evaluation of processes ; perusal of existing legal instruments and adaptation
