1 Non-Parcel Resources E 1st Street between Rose and Hewitt (south side) 1st Street Granite Curbs Year built: 1900 Architectural style: No style Sub context: No Sub-context Theme: Event or Series of Events, Other 5S3 Rare remaining example of granite curbing in Los Angeles' primary industrial district. These granite curbs appear to be a remnant of the original curbing that likely extended throughout the industrial area. More research would be needed to determine the precise date and extent of these granite curbs. This resource appears to meet local criteria only and may not meet significance thresholds for National Register or California Register eligibility. 15th Street between Mateo and Imperial 15th Street Railroad Tracks with Granite Bricks Year built: 1900 Sub context: No Sub-context Theme: Event or Series of Events, Industrial 5S3 Rare remaining example of railroad tracks lined with granite bricks in Los Angeles' primary industrial district; a remnant of a feature that likely extended throughout the industrial area. While vacated railroad tracks are scattered throughout the industrial area, this appears to be one of the only examples to retain the original granite bricks. 2 Northwest end of Casa Italiana parking lot "The Immigrants" Sculpture Year built: 1971 Sub context: Cultural Development and Institutions, Theme: Public Art, Sculpture, Sculpture & C/3/3 QQQ Intact example of public art. Concrete and steel sculpture entitled "The Immigrants," designed by Italian artist Alberto Biasi. In 1970, Biasi was asked to execute a sculpture honoring the Italian people for a new cultural center, Casa Italiana. Biasi chose the theme of immigration for his semi-abstract piece, which depicts figures in various poses symbolizing both gratitude and protest. Today, this sculpture is one of few remaining resources associated with Los Angeles' "Little Italy" and the Italian- American community that historically resided in this area of the city. 6 Entrance of Casa Italiana Replica Lupa Capitolina Sculpture Year built: 1930 Sub context: Cultural Development and Institutions, Theme: Public Art, Sculpture, Sculpture & C/3/3 QQQ Intact example of public art. Bronze replica of the Lupa Capitolina, an ancient statue of a she-wolf, with twins representing Remus and Romulus added during the Italian Renaissance; the completed monument has long served as a symbol of Rome. In the 1930s, the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini adopted the Lupa as a symbol, and had bronze copies of the monument sent to Italian social clubs abroad, including to a club in Fontana, California. The replica was later acquired by Nick Masiello, who donated it to Casa Italiana in Public art identified as part of SurveyLA will be evaluated for significance pending further research and development of a historic context.
