5 08 WATNEY FALL DESIGN V. 8 WEEKS Watney is an art installation for SXSW, the premier music, film, and technology festival in Austin, TX. Our design studio was tasked with producing an interactive and experiential piece to be displayed during the week. As a design build studio, everything from concept development and design to fundraising and production was carefully considered. Nearly 150 forms were generated by studio members, at which point one of my designs was selected to be developed and built in collaboration with the rest of the Design V studio members. 09

6 10 The installation consists of three main components: the steel plate base, the 21 individual waffle structure components, and the outer skin. The form was split into chunks using parametrically based computation methods first splitting the form into three main pieces, then further dividing each of those pieces into smaller pieces. Each individual chunk is comprised of three parts: the waffle, the end caps, and the offset end caps. The end caps are secured to the waffle through teeth that bend off the edges of each waffle element. The 2 offset end caps are then attached to the outside of the chunk and help accentuate the fractured nature of the form. 11

7 Alpolic, manufactured and donated to our studio by Mitsubishi, is the sole material used for the installation (except for the fastening hardware and polypropylene skin). Typically used as cladding in architectural applications, Alpolic consists of a polyethylene core sandwiched by two thin layers of painted aluminum. 12 Clockwise from top left: 1. 10 18 EAST FOURTH SPRING DESIGN IV. 10 WEEKS EAST FOURTH is a mixed-use development in Austin s quickly growing and vitally important Transit Oriented Development (TOD) east of downtown. The project includes 38 residential units, ranging from small artist lofts to large multi-bedroom townhomes. Flexible commercial space holds the corners of the ground floor, which, under the new urban plan, is adjacent to the most prominent connection between Downtown and East Austin. The project has two parts: my development proposal for the TOD and the multi-family residential intervention. 19

11 After studying the history of the neighborhood and analyzing current conditions, like gentrification and transportation, we made a number of large scale moves to allow for the development of a rich, inclusive, and highly successful urban fabric. These proposed changes to the neighborhood are detailed on page In our development plan, we reach 72.5 units/acre, a significant increase from the 40 units/acre that is currently suggested by the City of Austin for TOD designated areas. At the same time we have increased public green space from the 2.5% that zoning currently would allow for to a much more attractive 30% in the 3 x 11 block site. 21

13 Urban Development Plan (1) The redirection and subsequent slowing down of the urban light rail. The current rail system only works effectively for commuters because of the lack of stops and relatively high speed. The tracks currently run through the middle of otherwise very useable land. By moving the rail north half a block, there will be an increase in accessibility and property value for adjacent sites. (2) The proposal celebrates the history of the old rail location a critical piece of infrastructure in the original development of Austin. A linear park for pedestrians and bicycles, and adjacent retail space follow the original train tracks. (3) Removing the berm below I-35 and redirecting the frontage road to increase accessibility between Downtown and East Austin

14 Phase Two of the project is the design of a multi-family housing complex on one of the sites within our proposed master plan for the neighborhood. The site chosen is highlighted in red on the proposed master plan on the title page of this project. Smaller loft units are on the south side of the ground floor (on the busy 4th Street), while family oriented townhomes are on the north side, immediately next to the linear park and walking path. The elevated courtyard (on the second level) is accessible by several exterior stairs and becomes a more intimate extension of the street. The east and west sides of the ground floor are for commercial uses. Above: Residential unit type diagrams denoting both overall organization and general programming. The project includes a wide variety of unit types and sizes, from small studio lofts to expansive three bedroom townhomes. In developing a number of very different unit typologies, the residential intervention creates housing opportunities for a more significant slice of the population than what is typical in most housing projects. 16 30 MIND + BODY FALL DESIGN III. 6 WEEKS Mind + Body is a branch library sited in the heart of the South Congress District in Austin, TX. While the project celebrates the traditional act of reading books and maintains many elements of the time-tested typology that is the library, the project also expands on this definition. With Plato s Dualism in mind, the project looks back to classical notions of mind and body by incorporating a fitness center into what is otherwise a very static programmatic definition. 31

19 36 VAVDA FALL VISCOM III. 2 WEEKS Vavda is a pavilion conceived parametrically in Revit. The design process began with the development of a conceptual mass defined by a series of curves in space. Interpolating between these curves produces a surface capable of receiving an applied component. The component, detailed on the following spread, is linked to the surface and automatically populates based on the surface geometry a set of curves that can be changed at any point throughout the design process. The result of the populated component creates a woven condition. 37

21 40 SKAL FALL VISCOM III. 2 WEEKS Skal has been conceived using Grasshopper as a design tool. Everything from the general surface to the punctured holes are parametrically controlled through a series of definitions. A set of points (and their respective locations in space), each controlled independently, are used to define the base surface. These points are then copied, raised in the y-direction, and further manipulated to create variations between the top shell and the base. A simple circle is then populated along the top surface, with the radii value determined by two control points. 41

22 42 PILOTI FALL CONTROLS. 3 WEEKS PILOTI is a slender, wood and concrete light fixture developed to increase overall luminance within a space through primarily up lighting strategies. Just as important, and equally considered throughout the design process, is the aesthetic effect of the luminaire in the space while on and off. The commanding presence anchors the room; reading as a strong monolithic sculpture during the day, and at night becoming a far more intricate source of ambient light. The luminaire stands 6 1/2 feet tall and is lit by LED strips running the length of the fixture. 43

25 Plan The 1/4 plywood housing has been CNC routed in a way that leaves only 1/42 of material where the pattern occurs. Because the material is never fully penetrated, when light is not passing through the surface there is no sign that any modification has been made to the wood. Only after the light is turned on is the dot pattern revealed. 26 50 SXSW ECO FALL DESIGN V. 4 WEEKS SXSW Eco commissioned our studio to design and build the stage backdrops for their annual design conference. The form was developed in 3ds Max by digitally simulating the folds that occur in cloth. After abstraction, the 24 x 8 backdrop was divided into six smaller 4 x 8 sections for production and assembly purposes. The panels are made of a thin wood veneer laser cut in strips and assembled using custom designed plastic tabs and bolts. The surfaces were then attached to CNC routed plywood frames, each unique to its respective surface. 51

29 56 CHARLOTTE SUMMER PROFESSIONAL A mixed use development in Charlotte, NC featuring retail, restaurants, office, and a movie theater. The strict square footage requirements defined by the developer and the movie theater above retail made keeping the development visually and physically comfortable a particular challenge. Through the use of intricate detailing, however, the introduction of a human scale is quite successful. I led schematic design for the office tower and retail on the north side of the site. 57

BROOKS SUMMER PROFESSIONAL I was responsible for the schematic design of the lobby renovation in the Perry Brooks Building, an office tower downtown Austin, with tenants ranging from creative offices to law firms. The limited budget did not allow for significant changes to the exterior, however the implementation of a large planter that wraps into the interior and becomes a guardrail on one side and bar counter on the other connects the lobby visually to the street, drawing people in. 59
