1 Restore. Reveal. Renew. RESOURCE North Dakota State University Site planning, architecture and landscape architecture proposals for the reuse of the Homestake Powderhouse Magazines

2 The context Powderhouse Location Deep in South Dakota s Black Hills, the Homestake Mining company stored the explosives that they used to blast gold bearing earth. The three nearly identical 60 by 18 brick buildings are located south of Lead, South Dakota just steps from the internationally known George Mickelson Trail. Formerly a rail corridor vacated in 1983, the Mickelson trail transverses towns and wilderness of the Black Hills. Today the trail is utilized year round for hiking and biking and in the winter for snowmobiling and Nordic skiing. The mine abandoned use of the buildings in the 1960 s and the Bureau of Land Management took possession of the historic structures in Powderhouse, Courtesy of Adams Museum Archives Powderhouse interior, Courtesy of Adams Museum Archives Powderhouse, 2007

3 The objective to stabilize, protect and encourage appreciation of these cultural resources To accomplish this: Redevelopment of the structures is vital. This can provide a valuable amenity to extend the tourism product (things to see, do and/or places to stay) along the Mickelson trail while stemming the destruction of the magazines from vandalism through regular surveillance. Reuse of the structures will draw attention to these cultural resources by proximity to new users. Thus, this initiative is to develop a feasibility study, draw site and building plans, and make presentations to developers/concessionaires to market the Homestake Powder Magazines for their adaptive reuse.

4 Design challenge + inspiration Professors Wiley and Aly Ahmed charged students with the task of creating a place for recreation, relaxation or rejuvenation. When visiting the magazines, students investigated the sounds, smells, materiality, feelings they associated with the place and made sketches that captured the spirit of place by seeking the unusual, the inspirational, that which is appealing or sublime. They inquired: What would look cool here? What could happen here that would entice someone to spend time here? How might the structures be altered such that they look unchanged from the front? What is happening on the lands adjacent to the powderhouses? Are there opportunities to connect the nearby communities, functionally spiritually or conceptually, with the magazines? What intervention could expand the seasonal attraction of the place? Students recorded their ideas, brought these back to the studio and developed the following proposals:
