25 BIODIVERSITY STRATEGY Successional Plant Strategy SLOW GROWING SPECIES PIONEER TREE SPECIES SHRUBS/GROUNDCOVER_SUN/SHADE SHRUBS/GROUNDCOVER_SUN Establishment Fast growing, sun tolerant pioneer species provide shade for the propagation and establishment of the emergent plants. Adaptation The emergent grows quickly under the shade of the mature pioneers and shade tolerant shrubs/groundcover succeed the sun-loving undergrowths Maturity The emergent trees project above the pioneers. Pioneer shrubs die back and make way for shrub/groundcover for shade loving plants.
