3 Introduction Controls for the HATT and Hall A/C cryotargets are very similar. Hall A/C operator training and Tritium Target Operator training are required for operating the HATT Controls are located on the poltarac machine Use standard poltar login In directory: /home/poltar/desktop/t2targ The HATT needs ESR 15K He to cool the target HX The gas target and solid targets are conductively cooled through the HX The HATT operators responsibilities are very similar to those of the cryotarget operator. The ESR is now running very close to its total capacity Expect reliability issues and be a good cryo-citizen. Operation of the target shall be by the procedure TGT-PROC

4 Principles of Operation The operating temperature of the HATT is 40K nominally. 15K He from the ESR is used to cool the target This must be warmed to ~40K to prevent liquefaction of T2 We raise the temperature of the coolant by using a heater on a PID loop Similar to cryotarget loop heater The return temperature of the He must be kept below ~28K at the inlet to the ESR. Both Hall A and Hall C flow is mixed prior to this inlet. Initially we will return from the HATT with colder than 28K gas but this requirement may change as we learn more during operations To ensure that the return temperature is cold enough flow from a bypass loop is mixed with the flow cooling the target HX.

At the moment that limit is less than 28K. As we learn from operations with ESR this may be changed.

8 Cryostat Status This page contains most of the important information at a glance The flow schematic shows temperatures, heater power, JT settings, etc. Vacuum and cryo flows are included. This is an excellent representation of the target system.

9 JT-Valve Controls Control of individual JT-valves for the T2 target is the same as for the normal cryotarget. Open the bypass JT so that the majority of the He refrigerant flow will pass to the cold return Open the supply JT enough to give ~50W of heater overhead. There are multiple points of entry to the JT-valve control window-which is the same as the cryotarget The JT-valve control box in the counting house is still active.

10 Temperature, PID and Heater Controls The heater PID controls are the same for the T2 target and Cryotarget We will nominally set the heater PID temperature to 40K This may be tuned depending on what we observe during operations. Operators are not to change the PID control temperature unless instructed to do so by a target expert or member of the Cryo Group. Adjust the supply JT-valve such that there is about 50W of heat on the heater. There will be some thermal lag on the heat sink thermometry. The thermometry is not as accurate for the tritium target HX as it is for the cryotargets.

11 Target Motion The target motion system for the tritium target is the same as the cryotargets. Remember to inform MCC of the need to move the target as target motion triggers and FSD Ensure that the target is in the HOME position prior to any access to the Hall. The target motion controls are located on the left side of the main GUI. Just like the cryotarget. The crash button on the console in the counting house is still active and will KILL motion if actuated.

12 EPICS Alarms and Response The HATT alarms are very similar to the cryotarget alarms. The alarm handler APP is started from the GUI in the same way as for the cryotarget. The EPICS alarms are on Inlet and outlet He temperatures HX (heat sink) temperatures Heater Power Vacuum pressure Cryo temps, pressures, and flows. As always call a target expert if an alarm will not reset (clear). Continued

13 EPICS Alarms and Response There are two new signals from CRYO CTD6624 -> T1 outlet temperature Range is 12 to 14K This is labeled inlet temperature on the main GUI CPI60MP -> Compressor capacity Range is 2.5 to 3 ATM This is labeled outlet pressure on the main GUI If these alarm and will not clear: Call the target on call or Call the Tritium Program Manager Cryo shall be notified ASAP to deal with this situation. This may result in adjustments over the phone.

14 FSD System The standard cryotarget user should be familiar with the vacuum pressure and target motion FSDs. There are 4 additional FSDs in the HATT. Tritium Air Monitor When this FSD faults the operator must call the target expert on call. Call the MCC and Tritium Program Manager (D. Meekins) as well. Temperature controller 1 This will fault if any temperature exceeds the set point. This is to protect the cell from high temperatures (in excess of 150K). The likely cause of this will be and ESR failure of some kind. Temperature controller 2 Redundant to Temperature controller 1 with same function Beryllium window coolant flow. This will fault on low flow. Call the target expert on call if a fault does not clear immediately.

16 Alarm Box in Counting House Vent Line Purge Flow Chamber vacuum Lifter Emergency Stop Boxes are the same as for the cryotarget with the exception of the new alarm on the purge flow. Contact the target expert on call if one of these alarms faults; even if that alarm is not in service (i.e. H2 and D2 Low Pressure, or Vent Line Low pressure).

17 Rebooting the Target IOC Why? Heartbeat lost, stripcharts flat, white medm readouts, etc. Don t panic. You can do this! Call MCC for beam off. Reboot IOC from reboot GUI Wait 2 min. 18 Controlled Access Because of the nature of the tritium target, a controlled access is more involved for the target operator than for the standard cryotarget. Prior to asking for controlled access the target must be moved to the HOME position. This moves the thin walled target well away from the chamber window opening. The MCC operator will verify that the target is in the HOME position before going to controlled access. This procedure will also be used when taking the Hall to restricted access. Access inside the fence requires Hall A work coordinator and RadCon approval (or coverage depending on the situation).
