2 BERNIE SPAIN GARDENS birds, bees, butterflies and moths throughout the seasons, a valuable resource for declining pollinator populations Increased areas of gently undulating lawns, with high quality new topsoil and resilient turf to maintain a green oasis throughout the year A new custom-designed gardener s pavilion, providing a base for the Head Gardener and deputy, trainees, community volunteers and educational users Robust new granite paths and edges for easy maintenance New lighting and CCTV to help users feel safe and secure A much-improved tree canopy, with at least 22 new trees, introducing new species to increase variety and resilience, and the removal of 11 of the existing larger trees. This is on specialist arboricultural advice, because their condition is poor and their ability to thrive has been compromised by being too close to other trees A sustainable management and maintenance regime, led by the Head Gardener, to ensure the best year-round standards of lower-bed, lawns and tree maintenance, and to ensure that the Gardens are safe and clean at all times THE POLLINATOR GARDEN New granite seating edges to provide places to rest and relax throughout the Gardens KEY FEATURES OF THE NEW DESIGN At its heart, two pollinator gardens, with spectacular displays of colourful, scented, nectar and pollen-rich flowers Seating alcoves along the Riverside Walkway to provide a buffer between the crowded riverside and the intimate atmosphere of the inner gardens The planning application also includes proposals for a footbridge linking Bernie Spain Gardens to the courtyard at Oxo Tower Wharf Creating the ideal habitat for foraging, shelter and nesting for new planting and seating between the Queen s Walk and ITV site, in a style similar to that proposed for Bernie Spain Gardens north. 22 new trees m rolling lawn 390m of quality granite seating edges 2 680m pollinator gardens 17 different species of trees 70m2 gardener s pavilion Gabriel s Pier Queen s walk New Trees Ernie s Beach Oxo Tower Wharf Courtyard Commemorative Stone River Walk Seating Alcove New Bridge Grassy Knoll Oxo Wharf Tower Courtyard River Walk Seating Alcove New Trees Existing Tree Raised Granite Edges New Trees Grassy Knoll 410m2 Pollinator Garden Entrance to Service yard Existing Tree Barge House Street Gabriel s Wharf Educational Pavilion 270m2 Pollinator Garden Direct Access way New wooden Benches Granite Cobblestones Beehive Beehive 0.75m high Granite edge Upper Ground N 1:200 Bernie Spain Gardens South

4 TREE STRATEGY Overall aim - to increase the quality, variety and resilience of the trees on Bernie Spain Gardens north park and in the Queen s Walk Garden area and to add new species of trees, bringing blossom and autumn foliage to the tree canopy Methodology - tree specialist appointed and full survey undertaken; all tree decisions taken on the basis of full arboricultural advice. Each tree assessed according to relevant British Standard for its condition and prospects and given a category: A tree of high quality and value B - tree of moderate quality and value C tree of low quality and value U tree in such a condition that it cannot realistically be retained There are currently no Category A trees on either site. The existing trees are all Category B, C or U. EXISTING TREE CANOPY 73 TREES IN TOTAL EXISTING TREE CANOPY EXISTING TREE CANOPY 22 TREES IN TOTAL EXISTING TREE CANOPY On Bernie Spain Gardens north most of the trees were planted in Best practice would have been to thin them out 1520 years ago to give them space to grow, but this was never done, so a number of trees cannot thrive. The tree strategy gives the highest priority to: Protecting existing trees and giving them the best chance to flourish Thinning out where necessary for the health of the greatest number of trees. Planting new trees to increase species diversity. Proposals, based on the detailed recommendations of the specialist arboricultural consultant BERNIE SPAIN GARDENS NORTH Retaining 44 and transplanting 8 trees overall tree health and 10 small trees and shrubs. Planting 23 new trees, all new species, to provide variety and resilience against disease In summary: Current trees 73; New proposal 75 QUEEN S WALK GARDEN Retaining 10 and transplanting 3 existing trees Removing 9 trees assessed as too damaged or suppressed to thrive Planting 9 new trees In summary: Current trees 22; new proposal 22 Final outcome: a more varied, colourful, resilient and thriving tree canopy on both sites.
