Garden Day Trips For Garden Day Trips, pre-register at Private Garden, Nutley, NJ & Greenwood Gardens September 13, 7:15 am 6:30 pm Visit the wonderful gardens of Silas Mountsier in full bloom at summer s end! After lunch in the Mountsier garden, we ll tour Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills. Our chartered bus will pick up passengers at 7:15 am at PHS and 7:35 am at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Museum of Art September 28, 7:15 am 6:30 pm One of the premier horticultural attractions in the region, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden features specialty gardens including the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden, the Fragrance Garden, the Children s Garden, and the Steinhardt Conservatory. After lunch, we will visit the nearby Brooklyn Museum. The bus will board at PHS, 20th and Arch Streets at 7:15 am and at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park at 7:40 am. 3 Lecture, Book Signing and Reception: Philadelphia Trees: A Field Guide to the City and the Surrounding Delaware Valley Tuesday, October 3, 6:30 8 pm PHS Town Hall, 100 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA Join us for a lecture and book signing about the recently published book Philadelphia Trees: A Field Guide to the City and the Surrounding Delaware Valley by Paul Meyer, Edward Sibley Barnard, and Catriona Bull Briger. After a 30-minute presentation, there will be a reception and book signing. DIY Workshop: Festive Fall Jams & Conserves! Tuesday, October 10 or October 24, 12:30 3:30 pm Christina Maser Company Workshop 138 E. Madison Street, Lancaster, PA Join Gretchen Maser for a hands-on jam and conserve-making workshop. We will use all locally sourced materials as we create delicious and seasonal jams. Gretchen will walk us through the preparation and process that goes into making and canning jam and conserves. Fee: $55 PHS Members; $65 Non-Members. Watercolor Meets Color Pencil: Two-week course Thursday s, October 12 and 19, 10 am 2 pm PHS Town Hall, 100 N. 20th Street Philadelphia, PA Eileen Rosen will teach us a special technique combining watercolor and wax-based pencils to create a vibrant painting. Her demo will include painting a simple, flat, opaque shape of one object with only one color. Once the painting dries, learn how to build up layers by blending wax-based colored pencils to create depth, volume, and dimension. Fee: $75 Members; $85 Non-Members. Mural Arts Paint Day! Philadelphia Mural Mile Walking Tour & Mural Painting Friday, October 13, 10 am 12:30 pm Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street, Philadelphia See the amazing collection of public art with a professionally trained guide and hear the stories behind the murals and the history of the program. After the tour, visitors will add their own creative touch to a mural. A muralist will work with guests to paint panels of parachute cloth of an actual project in the works. Awbury Arboretum Historic Tree Tour & Lunch Wednesday, October 18, 10 am 1 pm Awbury Arboretum, One Awbury Road, Philadelphia, PA Join Awbury staff members as they guide us on a tour of the beautiful heritage trees throughout the Arboretum s historic landscape. This walking tour also will highlight key landscape features strategically placed by the Cope Family in the late 1800s. Following the tour, we will enjoy a catered lunch in the historic Cope House. Her step-by-step process includes seeing the large, simple geometric shapes, angles, negative spaces and values. Demonstrations and individual instruction will be given during this sixweek course. Holiday Cocktails Workshop at Awbury Arboretum Thursday, December 7, 6 8 pm Awbury Arboretum, One Awbury Road, Philadelphia, PA Aaron Gordon, owner of 13th Street Cocktails, will demonstrate how to make delicious cocktails using the freshest ingredients. Participants will have their own mixing station to try their hand at making amazing cocktails, perfect for the holiday season. Light food will be served to complement your mixed creations. PHS Meadowbrook Farm Programs All Meadowbrook Farm programs will be held at PHS Meadowbrook Farm,1633 Washington Lane, Jenkintown, PA Pre-register at Making Salsa & Sauces from the Garden Thursday, September 14, 12:30 2:30 pm Join Meadowbrook Farm staff for a fun afternoon of vegetable gardening tips and cooking demonstration. Walk through Meadowbrook s vegetable garden and learn how things are grown. Then, learn how to make salsa and sauces with Meadowbrook s own tomatoes. After the workshop, stop in the nursery to pick up your vegetable garden needs. Fee: $25 Members; $35 Non-Members. Enhancing Your Autumn Garden Friday, October 6, 1 3 pm Join Jenny Rose Carey on a tour of the gardens at Meadowbrook Farm where she will show you plants to choose for fall interest, planting techniques, maintenance, and plant placement. Leave with plenty of ideas and lists of plants that will provide color and interest in your late season garden. Fee: $10 Members; $20 Non-Members. Flower Show Pressed Plants Artistic Workshop Saturday, October 7, 10 am 12 pm Rita Dennis, a longtime Flower Show exhibitor and blue-ribbon winner, will lead this hands-on workshop. In the spirit of the 2018 Flower Show theme, Wonders of Water, participants will learn how to execute a pressed plant scene depicting water. Pressed plant material will be provided. Instruction will include pressing methods, storage, project sketch, and execution. Free; Registration is required. Participants will need to bring a small list of supplies (list provided upon registration). Planting Bulbs for Spring & Summer Bloom Wednesday, October 11, 10 am 12 pm Join Meadowbrook Farm s Head Gardener, Glenn Ashton, as he explains planting bulbs for a magnificent spring bloom in your garden. Learn how to plan, prepare and plant the bulbs now for a succession of flowers in your garden from February through May. Everyone will take home one of Glenn s favorite bulbs!

5 Flower Show Jewelry Artistic Workshop Saturday, October 21, 10 am 12 pm Join Mimi Favre and Hollis Bauer, longtime Flower Show exhibitors and blue-ribbon winners, for this workshop on the art of making botanical jewelry. Participants will learn techniques by creating a small piece of jewelry of their own design. Plant material will be provided. Supplies will be available, but you may supplement with your own (glue, paint, x-acto) and other dried plant material. Free; Registration is required. Decoupage Pumpkins! Thursday, October 26, 1 3 pm Join Estate Gardener Julie Bare as she walks you through the process of creating beautifully designed pumpkins, perfect for your holiday table! Each participant will receive hands-on instruction and get to take a pumpkin home to enjoy. All materials are provided. Fee: $25 Members; $35 Non-Members. Cactus & Succulent Propagation Workshop Thursday, November 16, 1 3 pm Join Greenhouse Manager Nathan Roehrich for this hands-on propagating workshop with a focus on cacti and succulents. Learn how to successfully propagate these resilient and interesting plants as well as how to maintain and grow a healthy specimen. Everyone will leave with a plant to grow at home and instructions. Make and Take Holiday Greens Arrangement Thursday, December 14, 1 3 pm Create a holiday greens arrangement for your home with Jenny Rose Carey. Everything will be provided. Learn about the best, longest-lasting evergreens to grow in your garden. Take home your arrangement. Tea, coffee and holiday cookies will be provided. Fee: $35 Members; $45 Non-Members. PHS Programs at Chanticleer All Chanticleer events will be held at: Chanticleer Garden, 786 Church Road., Wayne, PA Register online at phsonline.org/events or call Photography: Capturing Late Summer Color September 7, 5 7 pm Enjoy an introduction to garden photography with optimal light and without other visitors. Following a brief presentation of the basics, Chanticleer Horticulturist and photographer Lisa Roper will lead the group into the garden to put these principles into practice. This class is open to all who have a digital, single-lens reflex camera and have a working knowledge of manual or aperture settings. The class takes place in available light, so a tripod may be desired. Ecological Gardening Thursday, September 21, 5 7 pm Discover the garden as an ecosystem and improve your knowledge of how to emulate nature in a managed garden. Chanticleer Horticulturist Joe Henderson will lead a walk and demonstration on how to incorporate what is observed in nature into a designed area. Joe will review plant selection and placement, gardening techniques, and management that lead to a successful, naturalistic planting. Arranging from the Garden Saturday, September 30, 9 11:30 am Learn how to create flower arrangements from the garden, without diminishing the overall planting design. We will review how to select and harvest flowers, how to establish a garden that provides abundant stems for cutting, and what to consider when composing an elegant arrangement. You will create an arrangement to take home. Please bring clippers, gloves, a vase or container to work in, and wear comfortable clothes. Fee; $30 Members; $40 Non-Members. Gardening for the Birds Saturday, October 7, 9 11:30 am Join Assistant Horticulturist Lowery Douglass for this walk and talk on attracting wildlife and birds to your backyard or garden. Explore some of the hotspots for birds at Chanticleer. Lowery will point out bird habitat, preferences, and signs that specific bird species are visiting your yard. This class will review plant selections, gardening practices, and a checklist of fall cleanup tasks that aim to improve your garden as a wildlife habitat.

6 Seasonal Branches, Holiday Table Arrangements and Evergreen Containers Saturday, Nov 18, 9 11:30 am Using branches and trimmings from evergreen plants, we will create lovely winter holiday arrangements for the table, mantle, or front stoop. This class is open to anyone interested in learning more about how to arrange greenery and seasonal plants. Create an arrangement to take home. Please bring your clippers, gloves, a vase or container to work in, and wear comfortable clothes. Fee: $35 Members; $45 Non-Members. McLean Library Events All Library events will be held at: PHS McLean Library, 100 N. 20th Street Philadelphia, PA Unless otherwise noted, register online at Exhibit: Two Herbals: Picturing Nature from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance Monday, October 2 Tuesday, December 5, 2017 Viewing hours: 9:30 am 5 pm, Monday Friday This year marks the 500th anniversary of the 1517 edition of Hortus Sanitatis, a late medieval compendium with over 1,000 charming and sometimes enigmatic woodcuts of plants, animals, and birds as well as mythical creatures dragons, harpies, hydras, and mermen. Just 25 years later, Leonhart Fuchs published his landmark work De Historia Stirpium, A masterpiece of the German Renaissance, this herbal has over 500 illustrations including 100 plants new to Europe, drawn and printed with precision and accuracy. This exhibit lets viewers compare and contrast two remarkably different ways in which the natural world was depicted and described five centuries ago. Free. Rare Book Talk on Two Herbals: Picturing Nature from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance Thursday, December 7, 3 4 pm Learn more about these remarkable books why they were published, and what they can tell us today about European natural history 500 years ago. This will be a turning the pages event. Participants will have an extraordinary opportunity to view and ask questions about the books. Space is limited and reservations are required. Free.
