1 Volume 1, Issue 2 March 30, 2015 Greetings Sorors, The spring season has officially arrived! I hope you are enjoying the Basileus Corner sunny days of spring. Welcome, and I am confident you will enjoy this second issue Soror Wilma J. Ruffin of THE EGO Ivy Informer. For nearly 90 days, we have been a fully engaged chapter, responsive to the leadership and guidance of this new administration; thank you. The old saying, time flies when you re having fun may not fit all situations, but I am truly enjoying my work as Basileus of Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter. Perhaps, because we are an Awe-Inspiring chapter of committed and dedicated women. We continue to excel as we work for excellence in all we do. Our hard work is best described by the quote, Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of commitment to excellence, intelligent planning and focused effort. --Paul J. Meyer I am exceptionally proud of the 57 th Debutante Presentation and Ball, while extremely grateful to the Chairman, Soror Marian Guidry and Co-chairman, Soror Carol Woods for their leadership, guidance and execution of an exquisite Phenomenal Evening. As all plans were made from the beginning to the end, there were committees whose work was not debuted until the night of the ball; Escorts and Marshalls, Cotillion, Decorations, Scholarships and Program. Congratulations to these committee chairmen and committee members for your outstanding leadership and service. 2 The final Presentation and Ball was superb! Highlighting our Charter Members, Soror Evangeline Spillman and Soror Fannie Pulley Thompson, at the 57 th Debutante Presentation and Ball felt like the honorable thing to do, for it is on their shoulders we stand. I am so thankful we were able to move the ball to Saturday night due to the inclement weather. The Founders Day Celebration of our 107 years of existence, led by Soror Stephanie Burton, Chairman and Soror Blannie Batts Co-chairman, was celebrated with the theme Launching New Dimensions of Sensational Sisterhood. This program positively launched our rededication and commitment to sisterhood. Our Supreme Basileus, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson has established a new Sisterly Relations Committee. The committee functions at the international, regional and chapter levels using a guide developed to convey the importance of strong sisterly relations. It is an honor for me to serve on the Regional Sisterly Relations Committee. Soror Barbara Williams is the chairman of the Sisterly Relations Committee for our chapter. As we move forward, each chapter member will gain an understanding of how the efforts and activities of this committee are aligned with a segment of the Basileus Vision; Bring the Soror Code of Ethics to life by illustrating actions that strengthen the bonds that unite each soror. The 83 rd South Eastern Regional Conference Powerful Pearls Launching New Dimensions of Service was a fertile ground for gaining knowledge and receiving beneficial information to help our chapter effectively launch our new programs of service and chapter operations. I was energized by the excitement I saw in our chapter members after they attended the workshops on Saturday morning. I received phone calls and text messages from excited EGO Sorors who are ready to share and implement their new knowledge. Highlights and portions of chapter delegates reports will be made available for everyone, while each comprehensive delegate report will be on file as a part of the chapter records. Responding to the welcome to the 83 rd South Eastern Regional Conference was an enjoyable assignment because it denoted complete closure to all duties and responsibilities of the 82 nd South Eastern Regional Conference. However, it was delightful to hear from our chapter members and sorors of Cluster 2 the many compliments they received during the regional conference about the magnificent 82 nd SERC held in the Rocket City, hosted by Cluster 2, chairman, yours truly, and led by the 24 th South Eastern Regional Director, Soror Adrienne P-K Washington, a member of Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter. Seventy-two sorors verified their attendance at the Regional Conference with Soror Gloria Hemphill. Several sorors did not, therefore, we are certain we had more than 72 in attendance. Good news! We brought home two awards; Overall Pre-Launch Achievement Award and the Walker-Rigsby Collaboration Award. Congratulations Sorors! The spring joint chapter meeting will be held April 11, 2015 and I look forward to planning the meeting with the Gamma Mu and Omicron Zeta Basilei. The host chapter is Omicron Zeta and the meeting will be held at Alabama A&M University. Omicron Zeta sorors along with EGO s Sisterly Relations Committee are planning a special activity for our enjoyment. Stay tuned to the EGO Update for details. As we continue to Launch New Dimensions of Chapter Operations the chapter standing committee lists and program committee lists will be distributed at the April Chapter meeting. The standing committees have been appointed per the Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter bylaws. Some standing committees have been appointed and are functioning and those remaining will be finalized and all will be distributed in April. Sorors, I remain excited about Launching New Dimensions of Service programs while leading the Launching of New Dimensions for Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter as your Basileus. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. 2

3 SISTERLY RELATIONS Launching New Dimensions of Service as we Nurture Our Ivy From our Supreme Basileus, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson and Chairman of the Sisterly Relations Committee, each chapter will establish a Sisterly Relations Committee. EGO is proud to present the Sisterly Relations Committee with Soror Barbara Williams, Chairman, Soror Mary Rankins, Co-Chairman and several sorors who will plan and implement Sisterly Relations activities for the chapter. Our committee will function as a stand-alone committee, independent of the Membership Committee. Plan and implement activities that will foster and support the core values established in our Sisterly Relations Program and Soror Code of Ethics. Charter Member Pulley was not available for the interview. 4

5 On March 21, 2015, as I entered the beautiful home of Soror Evangeline Spillman, I couldn t help but to marvel at the savviness of this 95 year young sister of elegance and distinction. As we were preparing to do the interview, I thanked Soror Spillman for allowing us the opportunity to come in her home and interview her as one of the Charter Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter. She responded that it was her pleasure to participate in this interview. 1. What inspired you to become a Charter Member of Epsilon Gamma Omega? SOROR SPILLMAN: I was inspired by the Soror from Newark, NJ that sponsored me in Beta Alpha Omega. This Soror is also a Charter Member and she passed on to me the love and spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha. 2. How did you meet the other Charter Members? SOROR SPILLMAN: Some of the Charter Members were teachers at Alabama A&M and others lived in Huntsville or nearby. We gravitated toward each other and started having meetings. 3. What advice was given to the Charter Members while establishing Epsilon Gamma Omega at Alabama A&M College? SOROR SPILLMAN: I don t remember (Chuckle). The Regional Director came and worked with us. 4. What has being a Charter Member meant to you? SOROR SPILLMAN: It gave me the privilege of working with the other members in starting Epsilon Gamma Omega and watching it grow. 5. What is your fondest memory? SOROR SPILLMAN: I have many fond memories, but my fondest memory was the surprise celebration for my 90 th birthday. It was a celebration with Epsilon Gamma Omega, Gamma Mu and Omicron Zeta. I was totally surprised. I had boxes and boxes of cards and it took me weeks to read them. Many of the cards contained money. I was crowned Diva of the Day. ---Soror Evangeline was so proud to show the picture taken with our 24 th South Eastern Regional Director, Soror Adrienne P-K Washington (then EGO Basileus) and Geanne Quinney (then Gamma Mu Basileus) that showed crowing for Diva of the Day. 6. In one word, describe your experience of establishing Epsilon Gamma Omega at Alabama A&M College. SOROR SPILLMAN: Enthusiasm 7. What social issues were prevalent while Sorors were establishing Epsilon Gamma Omega? SOROR SPILLMAN: In 1949, problems were similar to problems we re having today. These were not just Huntsville problems, but problems such as racism were happening everywhere. Inter-racial marriages were also a big social issue. 5

6 8. As you envisioned what the chapter would accomplish, have your expectations been met? SOROR SPILLMAN: When we chartered Epsilon Gamma Omega, we didn t envision anything, so we are very pleased with what EGO is today. 9. What recommendations do you offer Epsilon Gamma Omega for improvement? SOROR SPILLMAN: Keep doing what you re doing. Keep implementing programs because you are already doing a magnificent (word) job. (Chuckle) --Soror Spillman told me that I might need to inform those who did not attend the 2015 Founders Day why she used the word word after she said the word magnificent. 10. What is it about Epsilon Gamma Omega that makes you most proud? SOROR SPILLMAN: So proud of the many good and loving friends interested in her health and welfare, and the health and welfare of others. 11. What advice would you give to a new Soror? SOROR SPILLMAN: Once an AKA, always an AKA. Keep active. Don t just wear the pin. Remember that you pledged to serve. 12. What wisdom can be shared with Sorors to improve and continue to perpetuate our sisterhood for the next 66 years and beyond? SOROR SPILLMAN: Wisdom, I m not wise enough to share wisdom. (Chuckle) It was such an honor speaking with Soror Spillman and she was delighted to be asked to share her perspectives. She repeatedly stated how grateful she is for the care and concern shown to her by the Sorors. Observing her demeanor as she reflected on the kindness she has received would make anyone proud to belong to such a wonderful (word) sisterhood. 6

7 CELEBRATING 107 YEARS OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA! Epsilon Gamma Omega s Founders Day Program Article by: Sorors Stephanie Burton and Latoyia Clemons Photos by: Sorors Stephanie Burton, Cynthia Gurley, Evelyn Penn, Chris Winston Fabulous, Amazing, Inspirational, and Memorable (word) describes Epsilon Gamma Omega's 2015 Founders Day Celebration held March 1, 2015 at the Jackson Center. Launching New Dimensions of Sensational Sisterhood was the theme for this special occasion. Sorors Stephanie Burton and Blannie Batts served as Chairmen. The planning committee consisted of sorors with a wide range of personal talents which attributed to the success of the event. This celebration was a joint effort from EGO, Omicron Zeta and Gamma Mu. The venue was beautifully decorated in pink and green, each table had a word name synonymous with SENSATIONAL. As sorors entered the room they drew a word from a basket and matched it with the table where they would sit---this plan enhanced our sisterly interactions. An ivy was placed on the tables for each soror, they were asked to write their name on the ivy and place it on the Founders Tree made by Soror Carolyn Simpson. Alpha Kappa Alpha Founders names and EGO s Golden Sorors were already a part of the tree to project our growing sisterhood. The program included a greeting/occasion from Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter Basileus, Soror Wilma Ruffin. Sorors Cheltzi Frazier, Basileus, Gammu Mu and Amber Williams, Basileus, Omicron Zeta chapters also provided greetings. The program continued with music, poetry, and special recognitions presented by the Hodegos of each chapter. Our dynamic Soror Venita Clisby-King was the speaker and her message was inclusive of theme words related to SENSATIONAL. Soror Clisby-King shared her personal experience of Sensational Sisterhood when Sorors Cynthia Benson, Gwen Redmon, Mary Rankin, Paulette Williams, and Adrienne P-K Washington were by her bedside through one of the toughest times of her life. Soror Clisby-King also stated, When there is a need for an inspired seed to be planted, we are there for each other without a doubt and you have that same kind of relationship with a woman of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA. Sorors expressed feelings of inspiration and motivation following the message. A reception followed the program with heavy hors d oeuvres. Approximately 175 sorors were in attendance. The Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter Founders Day Celebration was truly SENSATIONAL. WORD! 7

18 THE ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA BRAND WORKSHOP REPORT FROM THE SERC Article by: Veronica Belser A brand is a concept, an ideal that people hold in their minds and in their hearts when they think about a product, individual, or organization. For Alpha Kappa Alpha, at its core, the brand is a promise of what the Sorority represents and what it means to those for whom we serve. During the Regional Conference, the workshop "Alpha Kappa Alpha Brand" introduced sorors to the newly developed Alpha Kappa Alpha Brand Guidelines. Sorors learned how to appropriately use the key elements of the Alpha Kappa Alpha brand in internal and external communication (i.e. logos, colors, etc.) The AKA Brand Guidelines can be found on the international website under the members only section, then click on RESOURCES and go to tab 4, Fall Mailing. Below are a few notable facts that all sorors need to know: Logo Don'ts: Used by vendors without the written permission by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Corporate Office Be rearranged, redrawn, or elements of the logo rescaled Usage of the Coat of Arms and Administrative Seals TIP: When using the Alpha Kappa Alpha coat of arms and administration logo, always place coat of arms to the left and administration logo to the right. 18

30 ON THE YARD WITH THE UNDERGRADS OZ On the Move - Omicron Zeta s 1 st Three Months Article and Photos by: Soror Kadeidra, Omicron Zeta The Wonderful Women of OZ kicked off the New Year strong! During the Week of Welcome at UAH, OZ participated in various activities including Chillin with the K s, Make a Doughnation, an AKAdemics, and the Chargers Give Back event. The new Sorors of OZ celebrated their first Founders Day by painting the UAH monument pink and green, reminding all of campus that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc is the First. OZ also participated in the Inaugural Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in downtown Huntsville. OZ collaborated with the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta for Pink Goes Red, providing an information table about heart health and health screenings. OZ collected school supplies to support the One Million Backpacks initiative. OZ also collected canned goods to support families within the Huntsville community. On March 12, 2015, OZ made their way to the city of Rock N Roll, Memphis, TN for the 83 rd South Eastern Regional Conference. This gave OZ the opportunity to fellowship with other Sorors within the region and learn more about the sorority and its programs. These are only a few of the many activities OZ has in store for the campus and community. Stay tuned for more great works of service from the Wonderful Women of OZ. 30
