2 SUBSTATION WORKSHOP Kansas Municipal Utilities is pleased to once again offer the annual Substation Workshop. The classes will offer a wide variety of training opportunities and include field demonstrations and substation tours. This workshop is designed to be beneficial to the substation technicians, substation apprentices, lineworkers, apprentice lineworkers, and electric utility personnel that have responsibility for the utility s substations. WORKSHOP WRAP-UP AND ADJOURN CERTIFICATES A certificate of achievement will be sent to the utility managers of each participant. Hours of attendance acquired will be reflected on the certificate. A student registered in an apprenticeship program may be able to use the hours from this workshop toward a portion of the apprenticeship program completion. WHAT TO BRING Most of this workshop will be taught in a classroom setting, and participants are encouraged to bring a note pad and pen/pencil. 6 WORKSHOP CLASSES WEDNESDAY SUBSTATION SECURITY, INSPECTIONS & PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE BY BRUCE BELL, COFFEYVILLE MUNICIPAL LIGHT & POWER Substation inspection is an important task. It includes inspecting and maintaining a substation s fence, grounds, structure, equipment, and control house (when present). By keeping all of these things clean and in good working order, the substation is safer for you and the utility s customers. Inspections give you a chance to look over the substation and make sure everything is all right. The speaker will cover the industry best practices the City of Coffeyville uses to ensure the security, integrity, and reliability of their substations. Battery sets and battery chargers will also be discussed during this session. COFFEYVILLE MUNICIPAL LIGHT & POWER SUBSTATION(S) TOUR BY COFFEYVILLE MLP UTILITY STAFF Workshop attendees will visit the City of Coffeyville s state-of-the-art substations, conduct mock periodic site inspections, as well as tour Coffeyville s newly constructed power plant and substation located in the industrial park. Safety glasses and hard hats will be required for this tour so bring yours along. We will have some available if you don t have a pair. It is also recommended, but not required, that you wear steel-toed shoes. Closed toed shoes are required.

7 WORKSHOP CLASSES THURSDAY FUNDAMENTALS OF SUBSTATION EQUIPMENT AND CONTROLS SYSTEMS BY CRIS NAEGELE, UTILITY HELPNET, INC. An electrical substation is an installation with electrical equipment capable of interrupting or establishing electrical circuits and changing the voltage, frequency, or other characteristics of the electrical energy flowing in the circuits. The speaker will cover the purpose of the substation, components of the substation, as well as the equipment and their purpose found in a substation. OVERCURRENT PROTECTION & PROTECTIVE RELAYING BY LYNN SCHROEDER, MKEC ENGINEERING, INC. Over current protection is an essential element in ensuring the reliability of critical electric utility infrastructure. This session will provide an overview of protection solutions for substation transformers and equipment. The why and when of reclosures, fuses, and relays are used for protection, as well as an in-depth discussion of fault current characteristics, and how protective devices operate to minimize damage will be covered. SUBSTATION CIRCUIT BREAKER TESTING AND PROACTIVE MAINTENANCE BY JR HAMPTON, HIPOTENTIAL POWER SERVICES Periodic inspections, testing, and maintenance of substation circuit breakers is an essential element in ensuring the reliability of electric system and the safety of field personnel. This class will cover procedures for medium and high voltage circuit breakers, safe work practices, general maintenance best practices, as well as indicators of potential problems and failures of circuit breakers.

8 WORKSHOP CLASSES FRIDAY TRANSFORMER MONITORING AND CONDITION ASSESSMENT BY DEVIN LOVE, SOLOMON CORPORATION In a substation, the transformer is the most vital piece of equipment. This is because if the transformer fails the whole substation fails. The main purposes of substation transformer inspections are to determine trends indicating or leading to malfunction and to determine when to perform maintenance when a trend develops. This session will cover various inspections that need to be performed within the substation to ensure reliable operation of the facility. ENERGIZED AND DE-ENERGIZED WORK PROCEDURES BY CLIFF ZENS, UTILITY HELPNET, INC. Personnel safety is an integral part of any work done within a substation. The speaker will cover work procedures for both energized and de-energized operations within a substation and will focus on considerations for personnel when completing work inside a substation, including isolating a transformer, switching, and inspections. The session will emphasize on qualified personnel requirements, such as minimum approach distances, tailgate meetings, task-based hazard mitigation procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) considerations, including arc rated clothing requirements.
