SECTION 2 Connections Connecting Up The is delivered with a simple demo program to facilitate evaluation of Comfort s many features without much setting up and programming. 1. The main controller board, Ringer, and UCM are already connected together within the Comfort enclosure (see picture) 2. Plug in the 4 Zone Test Switches into the 8 Zones as shown. Each switch is configured as Normally Closed input. Pressing the switch on each zone will open the contact. The zones on the panel are set by default to NO EOL, so no End of line resistors are required. 3. Plug in 2 sets of Test Lamp into the terminals for Outputs 1 to 4. The lamps will light up when the output is turned on. The lamps represent lights and appliances for the demo. 4. Plug in Test lamp on the Speaker/Strobe terminals. Plug in a single Test Lamp on the Siren Terminal. This allows you to see when the siren, speaker and strobe come on and off without being deafened. 5. Connect a telephone line to the TEL IN screw terminal. If a telephone line is not available, this can be left out, but there will be a Phone Trouble alarm (beeping sound on the keypad) when Comfort detects the absence of the line. Enter your code (default 1234#) on the keypad to acknowledge the alarm. 6. Connect a telephone set to the TEL OUT screw terminal to demonstrate the local phone control operation. If one is not available, it will not affect the operation. 5

7. A cable has been made up which will connect the Keypad and Door Station to the terminals on the Control Panel. This is for convenience. This will NOT be supplied for regular orders. Connect the terminals KA/KB on the KP01 and DP01 to KA/KB terminals on Comfort. Connect the Voice/MIC terminals on the KP01 and DP01 to the Voice/Mic terminals on. Connect the 12V/GND terminals from KP01 and DP01 Comfort to the 12V and COM terminals on Comfort. 8. Optional: Connect a X10 two way interface TW523/TW7223/XM10E cable to the X10 connector (RJ11 socket) on the control panel. The X10 interface and cables are not supplied. Plug in the X10 interface to a mains wall socket. The demo is programmed to control X10 addresses A1 to A4. A4 should be a lamp module and A1 to A3 can be appliance or lamp modules. Outputs 1 to 4 are programmed to mimic the X10 devices so if the X10 stuff is not connected, it will not affect the demo. 9. Make up a mains plug and cable and connect the Live and Neutral and Earth to the 3-pin terminal block provided. Make sure the mains connections are correct before switching on the power. 10. If all the connections are correct, after a few seconds the keypad will announce Security Off. If you do not hear the announcement, check that the volume control on the keypad is not at the minimum level. The green HOME LED on the keypad should come on. On the main control panel, a green LED should come on, and the RED LED next to it should not come on. 11. If the telephone line is not connected. After a minute, there will be a beeping sound on the keypad signifying a Trouble Alarm, accompanied by blinking of the green HOME LED on the keypad. To acknowledge the alarm, enter your code on the keypad (default 1234#). The keypad will announce Phone Trouble. Press F to end. The system will continue to work without a telephone line. 6

SECTION 3 Evaluation Kit Configuration This demo program is saved as simpledemo34.ccl in the Floppy Disk or CD supplied, so it can be re-downloaded to Comfort at any time. The program has already been downloaded to the system. Security Zones The zone programming is; Zone 1: Front door Zone 2: Living Room PIR Zone 3: Kitchen Window Zone 4: Garden Movement Zone 5: Panic button Zone 6: Heat Detector Zone 7: Drive Movement Zone 1 is an Entry Door. It will cause announcement "Front Door" when it is opened. A chime will be heard on the keypad. Opening of any zone can be programmed to give a chime or zone announcement (as in Garden Movement). Zone 2 is an Entry Path zone. If it follows the Front Door when the system is armed, it will not cause an alarm. Zone 3 is the Kitchen Window. It is an immediate zone, i.e. when it is opened when the system is armed, it will cause an immediate Intruder alarm. Zone 4 (Garden Movement) is a non-alarm zone. if triggered it will announce Garden Movement announcement on the keypad. This is programmable using the ANNOUNCE ZONE action. The system is programmed to switch on the Garden Light on Output 2 and X10 A2 immediately and turn on the lamp on Output 4 and X10 A4 after a few seconds. The lights will go off after 10 seconds. This warns the occupants that there is movement in the garden and switches on the outside light to illuminate that area. The program also switches on an internal light after a few seconds delay so a trespasser may think there is someone in the house even when there may be nobody home. Zone 5 (Panic 24 hour zone) will cause an immediate panic alarm. Zone 6 (Heat Detector, 24 hour zone) will cause an immediate fire alarm with the temporal 3 siren (3 pulses followed by a pause). There are 20 siren types which can be assigned to the 31 Alarm Types supported by Comfort. To disarm the system, press 1234# on the keypad. The alarm history is automatically played. Press F to end Zone 7 is a non-alarm zone used for a PIR to detect movement in the driveway. When triggered, there will be announcements on the keypad and Door Station Welcome to the ABC residence... Please press the Doorbell.. This alerts the occupants that someone is approaching the house and can 7

scare off unwelcome trespassers who have no reason to be there. The warning message is one of 8 reminder messages (Reminder 8) which can be recorded by the users. Reminder messages can be played on any keypad or Door Station in response to an Event, or at programmed times and days of week. Home Control Menu Press F 2 on the keypad to bring up the Home Control Menu. It is programmed as 0 - All Lights 1 - Living Room Light (output 1 and X10 A1) 2 - Garden Light (output 2 and X10 A2) 3 - TV (IR code to Output 3) 4 - Lamp (Output 4 and X10 A4) Press the desired number key to bring up the actions which are possible for that device/key, normally 0 for Off, 1 for On. The control keys and actions are fully programmable. The Home Control Menu in this example consists of 4 devices, but this can be configured as 3 groups, say Lights, Heaters, Curtains with 10 devices in each group. Each device can have 10 actions e.g. on, off, bright, dim, open, close etc. The user need not know whether the control is via X10, output relays or infrared signals, they just have to listen to the voice menu and select the number required. There is no need to listen to the voice menu if they know the menu codes, they can just press the numbers to select the device and action they require. Note that for each device on the Home Control menu, with the exception of the TV, the actual status of the device is announced, e.g. Bedroom Light is ON (or OFF). If the keypad is in a menu, you can end it by pressing F. Outputs 1,2 and 4 have been programmed to mimic X10 A1, A2 and A4 The lamps connected to the outputs will show when it is on and Off. For the TV control, an infrared signal is sent to Output 3. If an IR transmitter is connected to this output, the signal can be sent to the device (TV, home entertainment equipment or Airconditioner). You can see the flickering of the lamp on output 3 as the IR signal is sent to it. For this demo, the IR signal is a sample signal and not meant to control any particular device 8

Scene Control Switch Top Left Living Room Light (on/off) Top Right - Garden Light (on/off) Middle Left All Lights Off (to turn off the lights) Middle Right Lamp (on/off) Bottom Left Night Mode / Disarm from Night Mode Bottom Right Announce Time Press the desired button to control the desired light or to arm the system to Night Mode. The status should be seen for all, except the All Lights Off button which is used to turn off all the lights and the Announce Time button. Arming and Disarming To arm to Away Mode, press AWAY on the keypad top right key. The keypad announces any Open Zones by their names. If all zones are closed, the keypad says Please Exit. You need to go out of the house by the Entry door to complete arming the system. Press and release the switch on Zone 1 to simulate opening and closing of the door. After 6 seconds if no zone is selected, the system will arm, the keypad says Away Mode, and the red ARMED LED on the keypad turns on steady. All lights have been programmed to turn off, the strobe turns on for 3 seconds and the siren output (BELL) produces two chirps. Opening the Front Door (Zone 1) when the system is armed will cause an Entry Delay. The keypad gives a slow beeping tone, with the red ARMED LED on the keypad blinking. The keypad backlight automatically turns on during an Entry Alert so that people can find the keypad in the dark. The Entry Alert is programmed to turn on Output 1 and X10 A1. To arm to Night and Day, press the one-touch keys below the AWAY button. Exit is not required in Night and Day Modes. Exit is required only for local arming to Away Mode. For remote arming to Away Mode, exit is not required - Comfort is smart enough to know the difference. In Day Mode, the interior zones e.g. PIR on zone are not active, i.e. will not cause an alarm, while in Night Mode, all zones except for designated zones will cause immediate alarm. Arming to Night and Day Modes are not programmed to turn off the lights. When an alarm occurs, the program turns on all the lights. To disarm the system, enter a valid user code (default 1234#) on the keypad. If an alarm occurred, the Alarm History is automatically displayed on the KP04, starting with the last time the system was armed. To proceed to next event, press 1 on the keypad, Alarm History is cleared when the system is armed. 9

Dialer In the event of any alarm, Comfort can dial to 8 telephone numbers. Each alarm type (max 32 Alarm Types) can dial to any combination of the 8 telephone numbers. For example, Intruder alarms can dial to the CMS and the owner, power failure can dial to the owner only; Low Battery can also dial to the installer, etc. The program has selected Phone 3 to dial out in case of most alarms. To program phone 3, press Keypad F 6. The menu says Select Phone. Press 3 to program Phone 3. The menu says: No Phone. Press 0 for No Phone, 1 for Voice Phone, 2 for Pager, 4 for Monitoring Station, 6 for SMS. Press 1 for Voice Phone. The menu says Enter new number and # key. Enter your phone number followed by the # key. Your telephone is now programmed as Phone 3. Press F to end. Programming the CMS Phone Type is accessible from Engineer Menu only, not from the User menu. To cancel a phone number, set 0 for No Phone as the Phone Type. Programming a phone as a SMS number will only work when a GSM module is connected. Comfort has a unique Dial Test Feature which allows you to dial to programmed phones without being triggered by an alarm for test purposes. Press F3 followed by 3 for Dial Test. The keypad says Dial Test, Please Hang up. Press F to end. If the system is connected to the telephone line via TEL IN, you will hear the system dialing to the programmed number(s). When your programmed telephone rings and is answered, Comfort says Dial Test (or the current alarm type in the case of other alarms) and waits for a voice. Say Hello or any other word to let Comfort know that you have answered. Comfort plays a recorded Alarm Message e.g. This alarm is from Cytech Technology, followed by: Press 1 to Repeat This Message, Press # to End. Press # to end the call, or enter your sign-in code 1234# to access the remote Voice Menu. The Dial Test feature is very useful especially when testing Central Monitoring Station dialouts. It allows the handshake and Kiss-off tones to be heard to ensure that the signal has been received. A test message is sent to the CMS receiver when the Dial Test is used. The CMS format is set to Contact ID by default. Now that you have programmed a telephone number for Dialout, when an intruder alarm, Fire or Panic alarm is activated, the system will dial to the number and announce the Alarm Type and Zone which triggered the alarm. 10

Door Station If you connect a phone to TEL OUT, pressing the Door station button will ring the phone (or phones if more than 1 is connected). The doorbell has been programmed to cause a recorded message (Reminder 7) to say Doorbell, Please wait... to play on the Door station and also the keypad as a signal to occupants that someone is at the door. Answer the phone, press 0 for Door station to talk to the Door station. You can program number keys to 4 to open Gate or 7 to Open Door using Comfigurator. If the system is armed to Away Mode, pressing the Doorbell will not ring the local phones; instead it will cause a Dialout to the programmed phone(s), and allow you to talk to the visitor just as if you were at home. Pressing of the doorbell is an event which can activate a programmed Response like playing a reminder message or turning on the porch light. When no one talks to the door Station or opens the door after the doorbell is pressed, Comfort can be programmed to ask the visitor to leave a message on the Door Station. You can also listen to sounds around the Door Station from any telephone. On the local telephone, press *1234# and 6 for Door Station. Voic To record a message on the keypad, press F4 on the keypad. The keypad says Leave your message after the tone,...(beep). When you have finished, press any key to end. The green MSG LED on the keypad will come on steady when a new message is recorded locally, i.e. on the keypad or internal phones. The MSG LED will blink when a new message is recorded remotely. To hear the new message, enter your code and # key on the keypad or any internal phone (press * and code and #). To remotely record a message from an incoming call, dial in from another line or mobile phone. After the programmed number of rings (8 in Security Off), Comfort answers and plays back the recorded Greeting Message (which can be re-recorded or erased), if any, and allows you to leave a message. When finished with the message, press any key or just hang up. The green MSG LED will blink after a new message has been recorded remotely. When a new message has been heard, it automatically becomes a saved message. Saved messages do not get played automatically when the user code is entered on the keypad or phone. To hear saved messages access the user menu, press 2 for Messages, then 2 for Saved Messages. Comfort plays saved messages from the oldest onwards. While the messages are playing, press 1 to skip to the next message, or 2 for the previous message, 0 for oldest and 9 for newest message. The answering machine has enough memory for about 10 to 15 minutes of messages in all mailboxes. When the memory is full, the oldest saved message will be automatically erased when a new message is to be recorded. Hence Comfort will rarely run out of memory for messages, unless new messages are not retrieved for a long time. This means users do not need to 11

manually delete messages, although they can delete individual messages or all messages in their mailbox. Up to 8 mailboxes can be set up for individual family members of office staff. With individual mailboxes, each user uses their own user code to access their own messages. However, the first mailbox can be set up as a common mailbox which all users can access with their own code. The first 8 users can have their own mailboxes. Users 9 to 16 have no mailboxes. Each mailbox can even be programmed to forward new messages to their owners mobile phones. In the demo, enter the user code and # key (1234#) to access the user menu, press 2 for Messages, 6 for Mailbox Options, 7 for Phone, and then press 3 for the phone to dial for this mailbox. When a new message is recorded, Comfort will dial to the programmed phone in phone #3, so the user can sign in to listen to the new message. Comfort s answering machine is superior to most stand-alone machines. Local Phone Access To access Comfort from any house phone, lift the receiver, press * within 6 seconds followed by the code (default 1234) and #. The user menu will be heard: Welcome. Security Off Press 1 to Arm Security System, 2 for Messages, 3 for Security Menu, 4 for Home Control, 5 for Voice Station, 6 for Door Station, 9 for Program Menu This voice menu can also be accessed from the keypad in the same way, i.e. press *1234#. The flowchart and details of the user menus are found in the User Manual. Remote Phone Access To access the voice menu remotely, dial into the system from another line or mobile phone. When Comfort answers and plays the recorded Greeting message, press * followed by the user code 1234 and the # key. The * key must be pressed while the Greeting message is being played. The same Voice Menu will be played as in Local Phone and Keypad access. Reminder Messages Comfort has 16 reminder messages which can be programmed to ring the phone at programmed times of day and any combination of days of week each week to play a user-recorded message. Reminder 1 has been programmed to ring the phones every day at 9 PM. The recorded message is Time to take your medicine. 12

In order to test the Reminder Message, set the time to 8: 59 PM. To do this, enter the user code and # key on the keypad (1234#), press 9 for Program Menu, 2 for Date and Time, then 2 to change Time. Enter the hour, 20 # (for 8 PM) and the minutes, 59#. This sets the time to 8:59 PM. When the time becomes 9 PM, the home phone will ring AND the keypads will give a distinctive chime. Pick up the handset, OR press any key on a keypad to hear the recorded reminder message. For more advanced users, Reminder messages can be assigned to user mailboxes and even forwarded to the users assigned phones. Reminder 7 "Doorbell" has been programmed as the message played when the door bell is pressed. It is not programmed as a weekly message. Reminder 8 "You are trespassing on Private property, Please leave the premises immediately" has been programmed as the warning message played when the Drive Movement zone is triggered. It is not programmed as a weekly message. Reminder Messages can be recorded in User Menu 2, 5. Select the Reminder message number and # key. Time Programs Comfort has 32 Time programs which can be set for any combination of days of week and time of day. In this demo, Time Program 1 at 11 PM arms the system to Night Mode and turns off all the lights. To test this, set the time to 10:59 PM as explained in the Reminders section above and wait till the time changes to 11 PM Vacation Programs When the system is armed to Away Mode, 8 programmed Vacation programs will operate (if enabled). They can switch lights on and off at semi-random times to make it seem like the home is occupied. In this demo, Vacation Program 1 is programmed to turn on Light 1 (X10 A1) anytime from 10 PM to 11 PM and turn it off after 1 to 2 hours. In Vacation programs you can set the hour but not the minutes of activation - the minutes value is random each day. To test the Vacation Program, arm the security system to Away Mode, then set the time to 10:59 PM as shown in the Reminder Messages section previously. 13

Remote Control RC01 The KP02 Keypad has a built-in Infrared Receiver which allows the RC01 Remote Control or a universal Remote Control like the Philips Pronto preprogrammed with Comfort IR codes to fully control any aspect of the system including Home automation and security and take control of the keypad. The RC01 keys are programmed as follows Room Keys Room Keys Room 1 Living Room Living Room Living Room Living Room Light On Light Off Light Off Light On Room 2 Garden Light Garden Light Garden Light Garden Light On Off Off On Room 3 TV Channel 1 TV Off TV Channel 2 TV Channel 3 Room 4 Lamp On Lamp Off Lamp Off Lamp On Function Keys Key Function 1 All Lights On 2 All Light Off 3 All Lights and TV On 4 All Lights and TV Off A All Lights On B All Light Off C All Lights and TV On D All Lights and TV Off Pressing keys together (Press and hold the left key followed by the right) causes an immediate Panic Alarm. 14

Pronto The Pronto is not included as part of this evaluation package unless by special arrangement. However, the ccf file containing the program simpledemo.ccf is available on the supplied Floppy disk or CD. This Pronto program has a screen with buttons to control the 4 devices (see below). Touching the On or Off buttons for the selected device will control the device accordingly. There is also a keypad screen which allows Pronto to act as a remote keypad with the voice coming from the KP02. Users can operate the keypad from the bedroom or couch in the living room, as long as there is a KP02 keypad in the same room. X10 Receive Comfort can receive X10 codes one 1 house code to activate Responses. In this demo, house code A1 is selected. When an X10 signal A1 ON, A1 Off is received the demo is programmed to control output 1 correspondingly on and off. The same goes for A2 to A4. This allows Comfort to be controlled from any X10 switch or controller. Programming Comfort can be fully programmed in 3 ways; 1. Local or Remote Telephone 2. Keypad 3. Comfigurator Software Tool Most people find that programming by Comfigurator is much simpler and convenient. However, the PC must be connected to the UCM by RS232. There is no built-in modem inside Comfort for remote download. Comfort s program memory is much larger than that of other alarm systems (up to 32 Kilobytes compared to 1 or 2 Kilobytes) so the simple software modems used in these products which operate at 300 baud are not practical for Comfort. However, Comfort has the capability of Remote programming via telephone. The Engineer Menu allows an installer to call in to remotely program Comfort. 15

This will be used mostly for making changes or troubleshooting or listening to the Event Log instead of doing full system programming. The advantage of this is that only a telephone (landline or cellular) is needed, so it can be done anywhere and at anytime without needing a PC and modem. Comfort s Engineer Menu requires an Engineer Code, default 6789#. However, as protection for the user, F0 must be entered at the keypad to enable the use of the Engineer Code to access the Engineer Menu for programming. Full details of Comfort programming can be found in the manual Comfigurator Reference Manual or the Comfigurator help file. The simple demo program used here is in the file called simpledemo34.ccl in the supplied floppy or CD. When you have installed Comfigurator, use File > Open to load the file. You can download the program into Comfort again by pressing Transfer > Download (PC to Comfort). The UCM must be connected to the PC Serial Port first.
