1 Page 1 of 9 Having trouble viewing this ? Click here M&M Lumber Newsletter July 2014 Hello friends! We had a break from the summer heat for a few days last week but the sun is back in full force this week kicking out the high temperatures. Hopefully you were able to take advantage of the cooler weather by getting some things done outside that needed to be done. Trucking continues to be a huge issue in the lumber industry as material is not getting to its destination very quick! Dwindling capacity, driver shortages and new regulatory guidelines are a few of the reasons the In ThisIssue Market Report Growing up M&M Lumber Lumber Yard News At the Wood Pile Thirsty? Lemonade Stand Facebook Updates Did you know? Feedback At the Wood Pile Celebrating M&M Lumber 50th Anniversary!
2 Page 2 of 9 imbalance in available trucks and available loads has been created. The days of ordering a treated truck on Monday and receiving it Wednesday is not the case right now. We are lucky to get the truck within two weeks. Continue to plan ahead for longer ship times to obtain material. July 24th (Thursday) come celebrate and have an ice cream sunday on us! Come by the store between 2-4 and cool off with an ice cream. Forecasters who said that business would pick up the middle of the year seem to be correct. Both customers and suppliers tell us that they have seen a nice uptick in business despite some price increases here and there. We are still working on plans for the M&M Lumber 50th Anniversary party scheduled for September 11 from 4-6. Make sure to mark your calendar as we will have lots of vendors, door prizes, burgers and fun! In this month's newsletter you will find the latest market report, some Facebook updates, and a few things that are happening around M&M Lumber. Let us know what you like best about the newsletter and what you'd like to see in the future. We appreciate your business as well as your feedback. If you have any questions, feel free to call or us! Thank you for supporting M&M Lumber, the place to be for your building and hardware needs. Mark your calendar for September 11, pm Burgers, vendors, door prizes and more! M&M Lumber's 50th Anniversary Party Surplus We have 2x6 8' & 10' #3 back on sale! 8' are $3.00 and 10' are $4.00. Go tell all your friends! Keith's Ice Cold Lemonade Stand Sincerely, M&M Lumber MarketReport: Market Update: Gypsum: The gypsum market has no changes with little movement in price.
3 Page 3 of 9 Roofing: AtlasRoofing has announced a 7-9% price increase on shingles and underlayments effective August 1 citing escalating raw material, health insurance costs, increased freight and other operating costs. Thefelt market is steady. Rebar: The rebar market remains fairly flat. Scrap steel posted down in early June but somelarge buys in the end of June has made therebound of the decrease raise to back to where it started. Domestic producers are not expected to ask for price increases till the 4th quarter due to the low demand in themarket. Lumber: As mentioned above, the lumber market has been'drained' (pun intended) by the shortage of transportation. This has actually causedtight supply of frantic buying for some who werewaiting on pre-sold inventory to job sites. What this causes for the next 30 days is over supply situations across thestates. We would expect with excessiveheat and thunderstorms that job site productivity will decrease, directly affecting the demand in inventory. A logical presumption would be that prices are to weakenas mills are unable to keep up their order files. OSB: OSB has been a different story when compared to the lumber market. OSB has beenoversupplied all year and distribution hasnot felt the need to keep heavy inventory. There stands a chance the prices could move up in the next 30 days as consumption outpacessupply in distribution and the low inventory they have kept so far this year. Plywood/Panels: A Swanson Plywood and Veneer mill caught on fire Thursday afternoon in Springfield, Ore. The 30+ acre facility had multiple buildings of their mill catch on fire but all Don't forget that M&M Lumber is hosting Keith's Ice Cold Lemonade stand benefiting The Little Light House! On Wednesdays from 10 am - 2 pm, through August 20th we will have a tent set up with Keith's Ice Cold Lemonade! The Little Light House will have volunteers in our parking lot along with a tent giving out Chick-fil-a iced tea and lemonade for free! Donations are accepted and will raise money for The Little Light House to make a much needed addition to their current school in order to help more children with special needs. Come visit us on Wednesdays and have a cold lemonade! Click here to visit their webpage. Facebook Updates

If not, this is what you're missing: Posted : Check out these awesome donuts that were brought to us today. There are delivery trucks, hammers, saws and letters to spell out M&M Lumber! Weekly panel prices printed up on Friday due to the uncertainly of this recent fire and not knowing how much this mill would affect the demand in the market place. Other Vendors: -Chandler Material has been bought by MidwestBlock. According to the letter that was sent out, we should not see anychanges except a broader line of products...but we all know that is not always thecase. Midwest Block has in the past, been significantly higher thanchandler. Maybe after the dust settles from the buyout we will seewhat the Midwest Block prices will be. -CraftMaster/Jeld-Wen interior doors has announced a 9.5% price increase for August Posted : In celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year...
5 Page 5 of 9 11 citing increased raw material prices and increased freight, labor and energy costs. Molded doors andinterior flush doors will both take a 9.5% increase next month. -Railroad ties havetaken a significant price increase and theshortage of trucks has caused some headaches fortrying to get stock on the ground. We've had two trucks on order for a month awaiting transportation. -ISC Surfacesannounced a price increase effective July 14. Price increases rangefrom 3-10% depending on the product. -Floor sweep too hastaken a price increase. A 50# box took a$1.00/box increase this month. -Plastic pipe pricescontinue to remain steady. No additional increases have been mentioned at this time...yeah! -Ames is experiencing some shipping problems with their striking toolsand long handled tools. Ames recently changed manufacturing facilities and did not keep enough product on hand to handle the transition. To keep up with our inventory needs we may be temporarily substituting other vendors for some shovels, sledge hammers and other gardentools. -Lenox and Irwin haveboth taken a 3% price increase on their tool accessories. -In case you've missedit...trucking is an issue! -Facing uncertainty over an unsettled labor dispute between West Coastdockworkers and the operators of port terminals and shipping lines, imports are expected toreach their highest monthly volume in at leastfive years in July, according to the Global Port Tracker report. Thereport, released Wednesday by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates, found that import volume is projected to spike 4.3 percent in July compared to the prior year. It's the latest month in a recentstring of higher import volumes that began inthe spring, which the NRF says is a result of retailers bringing in shipments early to ensure their shelves are stocked for the key back-toschool and holiday selling periods. 6 Page 6 of 9 M&M Lumber 50th Anniversary! With M&M Lumber celebrating our 50th Anniversary, we thought it would be fun to get some thoughts from some of the second and third generation family members of their memories of 'Growing up M&M Lumber'. This month we will hear from Audrey Rhodes. -Looking for some S4S knotty alder? Look no further. We keep 1x4 and 1x6 in stock. Feedback Are there items that you need that we don't stock? What are those items? We appreciate your business as well as your feedback. Join Our MailingList Click here Audrey is the youngest of the McKellar kids. She and her family live in Austin where Audrey is an architect. -What memories do you have in regards to M&M Lumber in our younger days? The worst memory I have was when part of the lumberyard burned down. I was young and most of my memories are retold to me, but I'm sure this was extremely difficult for my parents and grandparents. -What did you think was the most fascinating thing/product at M&M Lumber that you can remember? As a child I was most interested in the fork lifts. Of course, I never drove one myself but I was driven around the yard many times. -What memories do you have in regards to the employees that were at the lumber yard? QRScanner
7 Page 7 of 9 The hawks. Rick Geltz has always been so passionate about taking care of hawks, retraining them and then releasing them back into the wild. As a child it was amazing to see these creatures so close and watch Rick help them. -What job did you dread doing as a kid while working at M&M? I dreaded stocking and pricing spray paint as a child. This job seemed like it would never end and was pretty boring for me when I was young. -What funny stories/thoughts do you remember? I was five years old and I told Charles (Sheets) I was going to fire him someday. I don't know why I said or felt that, however, I was reminded for years after. Charles was an important part of the lumberyard and I'm glad I wasn't able to make decisions for the lumberyard at 5. -What memories do you have of grandma & grandpa in regards to the lumber yard? Grandpa was dedicated to his work and business. His commitment was clear after he retired, he continued to come to the lumberyard and sit by the coffee machine to talk to customers and employees. Grandma was one of the kindness loving women I've ever known. She treated everyone with respect and loved her family and the lumberyard. Her macaroni and cheese was pretty delicious too! -What did M&M Lumber teach you growing up? The lumberyard taught me to appreciate and enjoy the construction process. Growing up dad would take us to job sites and I learned how houses and buildings were put together. Those experiences have shown to be extremely valuable in my own career and the remodeling projects at my own house. -How do you feel that M&M shaped your life? Growing up with the lumberyard as a family business eventually lead me to my career in residential architecture. Throughout my 20's I realized I was interested in design and construction. I'm grateful that dad took me to job sites and taught me to understand the construction process. LumberYard News:

New Items: -We have back in stock (for the time being) 60 watt and 75 watt incandescent light bulbs. The push for the US to use less energy was forcing the incandescent light bulbs out of the market at the end of The major manufactures changed their production to quit making these bulbs about a year ago. The end of November Congress decided to reverse the decision from 4 years earlier and allow the incandescent light bulbs to continue to be made and sold. With most
9 Page 9 of 9 US manufactures dropping the production of these bulbs there was a lag of product available to buy, and several of the companies have still decided not to bring back the particular bulb leaving the imports to have the incandescent light bulb market.
