5 key green structure elements in urban tissue Sustainable Development Strategy of Riga until 2030 green belt green urban hubs blue urban corridors Spaces of biodiversity Green urban corridors 3

Quays Blue ways Soft urban waterfronts Spaces with week identity Temporary use of urban open spaces 21 Squares Parks and gardens Build Mix use buildings public spaces Private gardens Folks gardens Pocket parks Public space of educational institutions Culture and sport ( museums, open air museums, open-air stages, stadiums) spaces Multistory housing courtyards Health and social institutions (hospitals, homes for disabled and elderly, homeless people, red quarters, refugee camps) Public space of cult institutions ( cemeteries, memorials, churches, monasteries) Urban forests Forest parks urban meadows Mobility knots Road &streets Stations Crossing 4

Inevitable out (of) door space street 5

Age of automobile changed perception of the street from place of people to place of cars Roads are only for cars. People (pedestrians) are led on rides (as in an amusement park), on promenades that lift them off the ground, that subject them to a catalog of exaggerated conditions wind, heat, steepness, cold, interior, exterior, smells, fumes in a sequence that is a grotesque caricature of life in the historic city. (Koolhaas, R.; 1995) The function of the street... 6

Street has no function. Which function has life? Life! Street is life It celebrates social diversity mediates between diverse social groups facilitates communication Is a platform for economic activities Is a goddess of movement ability of mobility Secures breath in the city s physical body air circulation and city ventilation Creates feeling of belonging - My street Isthe first and the last path of everybody s life Nearly always present in memories of falling in love Indissociable from feeling of home Becomes a building stone of personal and social identity 7

Life between buildings (Gehl, J., 1971) Public space as lever for social revival (RADI RĪGU, ) Cities for people (Gehl, J., 2010) 8

Challenges Systematic approach to the street as an ecologically crucial element of cityscape Shift in perception: street is a social phenomenon first Institutional structures reflect the social nature of the street Institutional instruments aim to ensure holistic approach to street renewal Street design projects are consulted by specialists which knowledge cover different levels of the streetscape - physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social. Humanistic approach to street renewal Tolerant societies Humanity survived 41
