1 The landscape story is inspired by the coastal forest understory. The tall tree canopy, interlayering of understory plants, and the patterning of filtered light are expressed in an abstract and simplifi ed form that is compatible with a public urban setting. 2 The design provides both active social spaces and passive retreat edges to suite different users and activities. An animated street edge interface takes advantage of the slope and views in and out of the urban plaza. Durable precast concrete paving with architectural finishes emphasizes a coherent ground plane quality. 3 Two types of lighting approaches are used. First, various low level lighting types incorporated into floating benches, steps, walls, terrace gardens, water walls, and planting beds create the overall layered and soothing ambiance. The second type of lighting is the Forest of Lighting composed of feature pole elements that show different lighting characteristics during day and night. 4 The design approach is to increase the planting range through the grouping of species with different shade tolerances. Seasonal effects are considered in the plant selection to maximise year-round ornamental qualities.
