We do not expect to get everything right and look forward to being helped to fill in any gaps by local people. Soundings carry out a number of impromptu and semi-formal outreach events on and around the site. These help build our awareness of the neighbourhood, its many groups, the local issues and considerations important to the area and its future. Some of the tools Soundings use to do this are shown here. POP-UPS COMMUNITY LIAISON GROUP WALK & TALKS LOCAL STAKEHOLDER INTERVIEWS & GROUP SESSIONS PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS & WORKSHOPS Pop-Up events are held at key locations around the site. Canvass cards and mapping activities are used to help build up a cross section of the communities opinions, ideas and perceptions. The events also distribute information about the project and upcoming events to the general public and users of the area. Forming a Community Liaison Group draws together local representatives to meet regularly with the developers and masterplanners to discuss and inform the scheme as it evolves. The role of the group is to act as a sounding board for the project, to capture interests and concerns, provide a forum to discuss and exchange objectives, deliver direct and regular access to key representatives of the design team, and to communicate and distribute information. Walk & Talk events take the form of tours facilitated by Soundings and led by local people. They encourage local people to share their knowledge of the area and let us know first hand what s changed and what s important locally. One-to-one conversations and group sessions with local representatives, organisations and individuals help to understand a range of views and inform an approach to the consultation by ensuring that issues are addressed which are most important to local people. Through a series of public exhibitions, workshops and focus sessions, a debate and discussion takes place on how a masterplan for should be approached. Individual and group feedback forms are also completed. Soundings are community engagement consultants who have an expertise in facilitating dialogue between local communities, design teams, local authorities and developers. Soundings members are drawn from a range of different backgrounds including design, architecture, urbanism, graphic, web and text based communications. These skills help to ensure that technical and specialist documents are recast in a way that is engaging and easy to read while community feedback is integrally considered in design and delivery terms. Soundings have worked for both public and private sectors on a wide range of strategic projects with the objective of building understanding and consensus. To achieve this, Soundings act as an impartial consultant in the planning and development process, engaging with local communities to inform design and delivery processes and to ensure that local stakeholders are fully informed and engaged.
