5 3 Hygienic Version Today, many applications call for hygienic air handling units What is meant by hygienic version? Actually, no one really knows Everyone has his or her personal view One thing we can all be sure of is that demands on hygiene have also increased even for air treatment The electronics and pharmaceutical industry, hospitals and food management are typical business sectors that demand continual progress towards improved hygiene This development places new demands on the manufacturers of air handling units With this background in mind, IV Produkt has put together a project design guide, in which we specify the demands that ought to be made on a hygienic air handling unit The Fan Room It is important to also place hygienically demands on the space where the unit is to be installed If the fan room is kept clean, there will be few particles to enter unit while it is being serviced and due to minimal air leakage that normally occurs while it is operating It should be possible to flush the floor in the fan room with water The floor should slope towards a floor gulley The room should of course be fitted with a tap for hot and cold running water The unit shall be mounted on a support frame with adjustable feet There should be a clear space of at least 100 mm between the floor and the support frame to facilitate cleaning under the unit The unit should slope 5 mm/metre toward its inspection side to make it easier to collect and drain flushing water The fan room must also be adequately ventilated to prevent damage due to condensation on ducts and the unit Unit Casing To satisfy hygienic demands on a long-term basis, there must be provision to effectively clean the unit at regular intervals Smooth surfaces and the right choice of materials inside the unit are therefore important To meet these demands, IV Produkt air handling units are made of anodised aluminium profiled sections and ALC-protected sheet steel The anodised surfaces are smooth and protect against oxidation The ALC-protected sheet steel has been aluminium/zinc plated and has a protective outer plastic film that makes it easy to remove dirt particles from the surfaces This material is also very environmentally compatible compared with traditional galvanized sheet steel High demands on tightness must also be made on the casing The air leakage should be less than 1% of the normal air flow The design of the components is described below Dampers Dampers are in most cases unprotected and are exposed to the elements They should therefore be made of materials that can withstand this exposure Dampers can otherwise oxidise and release particles that can be entrained by the air and enter the system We recommend dampers made of anodised aluminium profiled sections with plastic parts Filters The collecting efficiency of filters is of course very important for preventing impurities from entering the air handling unit F7 is the lowest permissible filter class If the application demands a higher filter class, the unit can of course be fitted with finer filters Filters of high filter class are also capable of arresting droplets of water from the air, ie in foggy weather This has a negative effect on filter collection efficiency and can give rise to the growth of bacteria Such growth can be avoided by preheating the air to 3 5 C The tightness of the sealing strips around the filter cassettes is very important The leakage must not exceed 1% of the total air flow Coils (cooling, heating) We recommend liquid-coupled, finned-tube coils The fins are vertical and are therefore relatively simple to clean Their fin pitch is normally 2 mm, however a fin pitch of 3 mm is also available, which will make them easier to clean The coils must always be equipped with a drip tray and discharge pipe and there must be provision for inspection on both sides of the coil If these prerequisites are satisfied, the coil fin surfaces can be flushed inside the unit Coils should be sized so as not to require any droplet eliminator A droplet eliminator is very difficult to clean and can give rise to growth of bacteria Electric coils should be avoided Particles in the air passing through them may char and be conveyed further in the system Heat Recovery Both supply air and exhaust air pass through the heat recovery section It is therefore very likely that particles in the exhaust air will be transferred to the 5

6 supply air To avoid this, liquid-coupled recovery coils should be chosen They are entirely separate from one another and leakage is therefore eliminated If a plate heat exchanger is selected, a final filter downstream of the supply air fan will be required depending on what demands are made Rotating heat exchangers should be avoided if high demands are made on hygiene Their use involves risk fo air and particulate carry-over Fans The traditional belt-driven centrifugal fan is disadvantageous in that belts give off dust and the impeller is very difficult to clean properly since it is located inside a casing Incomplete cleaning can cause imbalance, which will damage the bearings To avoid the above, we recommend a open-discharge fan without volute (Windstrong) This fan is directdriven, ie the fan impeller is mounted directly on the motor shaft Since the fan lacks a casing, the impeller is simple to clean And there are no belts to give off dust Larger fan sections often have floor beams that prevent flushing water from draining from the casing If you select a hygienic floor, the section will be equipped with a completely smooth floor that substantially facilitates cleaning removes the sprayed fluids, floor drains inside the unit sections are not necessary The coil surfaces should be cleaned with care so as not to damage the fins NOTE! Merely spraying water on the surfaces and then letting it run out into a floor gulley is not an effective cleaning method This can be compared with washing a car solely by spraying water on it with a water hose The IV Produkt hygienic version calls for: - Reinforced bottom seal and filled frame member grooves (EMMT-14) - Coils equipped with a drip tray (see the coil codes) - The use of a high-pressure spray cleaning unit and a wet vacuum cleaner for cleaning (advisable) Silencer The silencer baffle elements must be withdrawable so that they can be washed on both sides They must have external staple woven fabric surfaces approved for wet cleaning While the baffle elements are withdrawn, the casing can easily be accessed and cleaned Cleaning If high demands are made on hygiene, the unit should appropriately be cleaned at least once a year A high-pressure spray cleaning unit and a wet vacuum cleaner with discharge to a sewer are needed for cleaning Prior to cleaning, withdraw all withdrawable components out of the unit (ie filter and sound baffles) Clean the unit spraying it with luke warm water mixed with a mild solvent, if needed, under high pressure While doing this, place the wet vacuum cleaner nozzle inside the threshold of the unit to suck up the water When you ve finished cleaning, wet vacuum clean the wall surfaces, gaps, corners, etc until they are clean and dry Since the wet vacuum cleaner 6

7 3 Outdoor Version If the air handling unit is to be installed on a roof, secure it to a base frame or on support legs above a leakproof roof A unit for outdoor installation should be supplemented with a roof, base frame and required weather stripping Obs! Not all the applications and sizes can be supplied in the outdoor version We therefore ask you to get in touch with your nearest IV Produkt representative for project design assistance Design Roof made of profiled sheet steel coated with plastic Inlet grille made of sheet steel with baked enamel finish, fitted in the unit section Extract air hood for minimising any short-circuiting effect Base frame made of welded steel beams, painted to M3 1 Roof 2 Base frame 3 Extract air hood Maximum permissible weight of an air handling unit with all its unit sections: 4500 kg 7
