12 12 Do you have a private side lead service line (LSL)? It is very likely that your private side service line is made of lead if: the public side service line is lead and/or your house was built before 1945.

29 29 Why is lead a concern? Lead can cause serious health problems if too much enters your body from drinking water or other sources (lead paint, dust). Highest Risk: Infants and small children Pregnant women Adults with kidney problems Adults with high blood pressure

30 30 How does lead get into my drinking water? Drinking water that leaves our water treatment plant in Scituate and journeys through PW s distribution system is lead free.

31 31 How does lead get into my drinking water? When water comes in contact with sources of lead for an extended time period, lead can leach into the water: Lead service lines Lead based solder Lead pipe (within household) Brass and chrome plated fixtures/faucets Brass valves

34 34 What can you expect after construction? Temporary increase in lead levels at the tap. If you do not replace your private side LSL, it will continue to contribute lead to your tap. Full replacement does not guarantee zero lead levels.

35 35 What do you need to do after construction? Flush your interior plumbing Complete lead sample test after lead service replacement

36 36 How can you reduce lead at your tap? Use water pitcher and filters provided to you by PW for 6 months after construction when using water for cooking and drinking. Filters are certified to reduce lead (NSF 53 certified).

37 37 Tips to Reduce Lead Replace your private side lead service connection. Flush your pipes Run the cold water faucets in your home until the temperature of the water gets noticeably colder and then for another minute (usually at least 3 5 minutes in all). Use only cold water for cooking and drinking. Periodically remove the faucet aerators and flush the screen section of all debris. Replace internal plumbing lead based soldered pipes, brass/chrome plated faucets that may contain lead.
