1 MEETING OF THE TOWN OF TONAWANDA LIBRARY BOARD October 10, 2017 A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Town of Tonawanda Public Library was held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Kenmore Library, 160 Delaware Road, Kenmore, New York following due notice to trustees, official public notice to the Ken-Ton Bee and a posting in the Kenmore and Kenilworth Libraries. The following members were present: Annette Della Posta, Richard Geer, Sheila Ginnane, Kathy Kanaley, Jeanne Phillips, Eileen Crawford and Stanley Pustulka. Also attending: Dorinda Darden, Library Director of the Town of Tonawanda Public Library Kenmore and Kenilworth Branches. APPROVAL/CHANGES TO AGENDA: Motion made by Eileen Crawford and seconded by Sheila Ginnane to accept agenda as is. Motion passed. ADOPTION OF MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER12, 2017 BOARD MEETING; Motion made by Annette Della Posta to accept minutes as written. Motion seconded by Kathy Kanaley and passed unanimously. APPROVAL OF BILLS: Bills from previous month reviewed and discussed. Motion by Annette Della Posta to accept payment of bills and seconded by Kathy Kanaley. Motion passed. REPORT OF THE TREASURER: Bank CD has been restructured to include one CD for 39 month, one CD for 29 months and one CD for 15 months; Treasurer Pustulka stated that this arrangement would provide more flexibility for library expenses if needed. REPORT OF THE CHAIR: Chair Geer stated he has reviewed Job Performance Evaluation with Director Darden Chair Geer attended recent Friends of the Library Brunch to thank all the volunteers who assisted with Book Sale Chair Geer met with Senator Jacobs to thank him for being instrumental in securing grants for the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Libraries REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR: Circulation: STATISTICS

Programs: The Central Library s Cyber Train Team presented the Introduction to Windows 10 Technology Training on September 1 st at the Kenmore Branch. There were 7 adults in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Joseph Patton presented the Crafter-Day Program for ages 5-10 on September 2 nd at the Kenmore Branch. There were 20 children and 9 adults for a total of 29 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Volunteer Partho Bhattacharya provided assistance as a Computer Coach at the Kenmore Branch. He assisted patrons on September 5 th, September 7 th, September 12 th, September 14 th, September 19 th, September 21 st, September 26 th and September 28 th. There were a total of 24 participants. Anna Cryan and Lily Smith, two students from Kenmore West High School s International Baccalaureate Program began volunteering to host the Homework Helpers Program for students in Grades 1-7 on September 5 th, September 12 th, September 19 th and September 26 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were a total of 4 participants. Kenilworth Branch Librarian Amy Christman facilitated the monthly Adult Monthly Journal Group at the Kenmore Branch on September 5 th. There were 6 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Volunteers Susan Doran and Jill Greenberg presented the Resume Helper Program on September 6 th, September 13 th, September 20 th and September 27 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were 4 participants. Kenilworth Branch Librarian Amy Christman facilitated the monthly Adult Book Discussion Group at the Kenilworth Branch on September 6 th. There were 3 in attendance. Explore and More Children s Museum presented the Stained Glass Windows Program for children ages 6 and up on September 6 th at the Kenilworth Branch. There were 15 children and 9 adults for a total of 24 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarians Nicole Bermingham and Joseph Patton presented the Kenmore Library News Program for ages 9-12 on September 6 th, September 13 th, September 20 th and September 27 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were a total of 48 in attendance. Kenilworth Branch Librarian Amy Christman presented the Craft Club for children ages 5 and up on September 8 th at the Kenilworth Branch. There were 11 children and 6 adults for a total of 17 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Jill Jablonski facilitated the Books and Barks Program for ages 5-12 held featuring a new Therapy Dog, Gus on September 9 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were 4 children and 4 adults for a total of 8 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Nicole Bermingham conducted class visits from

3 Creative Child Day Care on September 12 th and September 13 th at the Kenmore Branch. The children listened to stories, received an Introduction to the Library and a tour, watched a video, and spent time looking for books. There were 38 children and 6 adults for a total of 44 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Joseph Patton presented the Lego Club for ages 6-12 on September 16 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were 9 children and 5 adults for a total of 14 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Jill Jablonski presented the Kenmore Library Knitting/Crochet Group on September 18 th and September 25 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were a total of 9 in attendance. Kenilworth Branch Librarian Amy Christman read stories to children from the Kid Kampus during their visit on September 26 th at the Kenilworth Branch. There were 10 children and 2 adults for a total of 12 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Jill Jablonski facilitated the Teen Gaming Program for ages on September 26 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were 5 teen in attendance. The Falk School visited on September 28 th at the Kenilworth Branch. There were 2 teens and 1 adult for a total of 3 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Jill Jablonski presented the Preschool Storytime for ages 3-5 on September 28 th There were 17 children and 13 adults for a total of 30 in attendance. The Central Library Children s Programming Team presented the Sensory Storytime for children up to age 16 on September 28 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were 3 children and 4 adults for a total of 7 in attendance. Kenilworth Branch Librarian Amy Christman facilitated the Q.U.I.E.T. (Quest for Inspiring Effortless Thoughtful Time-out) Program on September 28 th at the Kenmore Branch. There were 2 in attendance. Kenmore Branch Librarian Nicole Bermingham presented two sessions of the Toddler Time for 2 s Program on September 29 th. There were 24 children and 25 adults for a total of 49 in attendance. The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Friends of the Library held the Annual Book Sale from September 13, 2017 September 16, 2017 at Lincoln Arena. The Book Sale raised over $14,000. The Town of Tonawanda Coalition Community Resource Hub was held on September 21 st at the Kenmore Branch. As a member of the Town of Tonawanda Coalition, Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden was one of the volunteers that helped navigate participants to the services they were looking for. The service providers included Blue Cross Blue Shield, Catholic Charities WIC Program, Congress on Your Corner with Congressman Higgins Office, Erie County Department of Social Services Foster and Adoptive Services, Erie Community College, Fidelis Care, People Inc. Senior Services, University of Buffalo (UB) Education Opportunity Center, Veterans Outreach Center. There were 10 participants who met with service providers and 8 individuals that inquired about the services. On September 21 st, Tess McCloud and Delia McDermott, 2 students from St. John the Baptist School, gave the Kenmore Branch a $57 donation which they

4 earned from their Kid Biz School Project that was held in May. The project involves students creating, advertising, and selling a product that they then donate the proceeds to the organization, and they chose the library as the place they wanted their proceeds to go. Kenmore Branch Librarian Nicole Bermingham sent them both a Thank You Card. The Town of Tonawanda Public Library Kenilworth and Kenmore Branches joined the Central Library and Buffalo City Branches in participating in the effort announced by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown to be drop-off locations for donations to benefit victims of Hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico on September 20 th. Donations will be accepted until at least October 6, Sabrina Young donated over 20 bags of items for the Hurricane Relief effort on September 26 th at the Kenmore Branch. Other patrons have been very generous in providing donations. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden and Town of Tonawanda Public Library Board Chair Richard Geer attended Senator Chris Jacobs Media Event held at the Central Library on September 28 th to announce the New York State Bullet Aid secured for the 12 libraries in his district. Each library received $10,000. The funds at the Town of Tonawanda Public Library Kenilworth and Kenmore Branches will be used for furnishings, equipment and programming. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden sent a Thank You Letter to Senator Chris Jacobs for securing the funds. The Town of Tonawanda Public Library Kenilworth and Kenmore Branches provided a Relax and Read Basket Raffle which included books, beverages and snacks. For every 5 items checked out, patrons could enter their name in a drawing for the Relax and Read Basket. Pat Mason won the Relax and Read Basket at the Kenilworth Branch. There were 51 entries at the Kenilworth Branch. Pam Horbett won the Relax and Read Basket at the Kenmore Branch. There were 261 entries at the Kenmore Branch. Two gift bags of books were raffled off to patrons who signed up for library cards in Celebration of National Library Card Sign-Up Month at the Kenilworth Branch. The adult patron winner was Cynthia Peters and the winners of the Children s bag were twin brothers Adam and Tyler Pezzino. The Passport to Reading Program concluded with 384 patrons handing in purple Passport to Reading entries, and 16 people finishing the region at the Kenmore Branch and handing in their yellow Passport to Reading entries.

5 Part-Time Kenmore Branch Librarian Joseph Patton was promoted to a Librarian I Full-Time position at the Kenmore Branch effective September 16, Kenmore Branch Senior Page Niko Mancuso s last day was September 21, Kenmore Branch Librarian Nicole Bermingham was promoted to a Librarian II Full-Time position at the Kenmore Branch effective September 30, Nicole will be the Branch Manager at both the Kenilworth and Kenmore Branches. Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden participated in the Ask Us 24/7 Virtual Reference Chat service on September 6 th and September 20 th for a total of 2 hours. As a member of the Zonta Club of Kenmore, Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden attended the Zonta Club of Kenmore Business Meeting held at the Church of Advent on September 6 th. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden attended the Librarians Association Negotiating Table Team Meeting held at the Central Library on September 7 th, September 12 th and September 22 nd. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden attended the Manager-Director Meeting held at the Central Library on September 13 th. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden as Chair of the Zonta Club of Kenmore Risk Management Committee held at meeting on September 21 st at the Kenmore Branch. Kenmore Branch Librarian Jill Jablonski viewed the How to Respond to a Security Incident in Your Library Webinar on September 23 rd. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden attended the Town of Tonawanda Community Coalition Meeting held on September 27 th at 169 Sheridan Parkside Drive. Town of Tonawanda Public Library Director Dorinda Darden, Kenmore Branch Librarian Nicole Bermingham and Town of Tonawanda Public Library Board Chair Richard Geer attended the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Friends of the Library Annual Volunteers Brunch held at the Kenmore Branch on September 30 th. Also in attendance were Town of Tonawanda Public Library Board Member Eileen Crawford, as a member of the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Friends of the Library and Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Joseph Emminger..

6 UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Town of Tonawanda Public Library Initiatives: Kenmore and Kenilworth Libraries now have the new telephone system installed. Staff training was completed on 9/25. The Library staff is now quickly adjusting to changes New York State Library Construction Grant: On September 25, 2017 the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library Board recommended the approval of the New York State Library Construction grant application submitted by the Town of Tonawanda Public Library Kenmore Branch. Strategic Plan: Discussed Goal 1- Leadership including Leadership Goals and Timelines. November meeting will be focused on Goal II Community Engagement. NEW BUSINESS: Reviewed Donated Items Guidelines and Procedures. No changes were recommended. Distributed and reviewed Daily Cash Receipts and Banking Procedures. Due to need for further information, this will be discussed again at the November meeting. Caretaker Duties reviewed and discussed. Pest Problems and Control Procedures reviewed. Suggestion that this be referred to the Town for their input. PUBLIC COMMENT: None Motion made by Eileen Crawford to adjourn. Motion seconded by Sheila Ginnane. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm.
