2 One of the mayor points was: What to do with the huge amounts of EPS after usage in the building after Deconstruction? In Germany: about 900 Mio. m 2 ETICS were built within 35 years only m 2 (1 ) will be deconstructed per year at the moment. (This means approx tons per year) 2

3 This means: It is a small problem today. For the future it will be a problem. But not a big problem. For the acceptance of ETICS we need a Recycling concept for ETICS Components WDVS-Verband EU-Directive:2008/98/EC: Waste Framework Directive In Europe: 70 % of the deconstruction waste shall be recycled till

4 Waste from production, construction area: 100 % of Waste is shipped back to EPS Manufacturer grinded Screened for visible soiling as flakes back to the manufacturing process Recycled product: new EPS-Boards with differing amount of recycling material 100% recycling material is possible for a Lambda 035 Quality. 18 Today most of EPS waste will be pressed to EPS Briquettes for Energy Recovery Energy content: 40 MJ/kg same as 1 Liter fuel Oil Approx. 70 % of EPS waste from buildings Advantages: Modern waste combustion plants destroy EPS nearly completely. No toxic emissions Soiling with mineral parts is no problem 18

20 Nearly all Energy of the production can be recovered by burning EPS at the end of life Does the public discussion accept this? (only 1800 tons EPS per year) or is the EPS Industry and System holders oblighed to recover EPS waste as EPS??? 20

21 EPS-Industry, System Holders, Building Industry must provide one or more solutions of the problem We have to convince the public opinion, that the problem is handled on a good way Energy Recovery versus Recycling to EPS 21
