4 Page 3 Contour Cooler N-E3 & BC-E1 Model Supplement Introduction This manual is to be used in conjunction with the Service Manual 14 issue 4 - Cooler - Contour Series, and for reference to Tekelek wall controls, Service Manual 12 - Cooler - AD / CC (series 4 & 5). The supplement deals with the different functions of the current Contour (Midline & Premium) model range with the new N-E3 module, and the introduction of the new base model Contour Cooler (Classic & Midline) using the new BC-E1 module. The N-E3 and BC-E1 modules both locate in the Contour Cooler cabinet in the same position and type of housing used for the N-E2 module. The Classic Contour will not be available with the Networker wall control, Servoseal and drain valve (dump), fan motor speed sensor, or wash cycle operation. Classic Contour will retain the Trident Water Management system, Water Inlet Solenoid filling, and use the Tekelek 485 (manual) wall control. Other Contour features have also been maintained such as, Pre-Wet, Pump Back Flush, Flush Service, & DC Brake, however, the functions and timing have varied from the N-E2 module. Because the BC-E1 module has no facility to handle the Networker, there are no Networker installer or service set up parameters. Servicing and diagnostic procedures are the same, as per the Service Manual - Contour series, except some functions do not a apply for the BC-E1, and some defaults and parameter values have changed. As Classic models have had the Servoseal deleted from the cabinet design, a new variation of the Winter Seal will be available as an

5 option. The Midline Contour (N-E3 module) range will now be available with either the Tekelek 425 (Auto) or the Tekelek 485 (Manual) wall control. Note: The Tekelek 425 wall control also performs a Pre-Wet function.

19 Cooler Operation N-E3 Models Module Upgrade and Parameter Variations The new N-E3 module Contours operate the same functions as the previous N-E2 module, however, some of the parameter value and default settings have been modified. The main change is an additional connection terminal to accept the Tekelek wall control. Page 13 MOTOR SPEED SENSOR LOOM NETWORKER LOOM Tekelek Wall Control Loom Plug WATER LEVEL CONTROL LOOM ALTERNATIVE NETWORKER CONNECTION POINT J 2 J 1 J 6 J 5 J 3 N-E3 Module Contour Coolers with this control may be purchased with either the Tekelek 425 (Auto) or Tekelek 485 (Manual) wall controls, or the Networker. The operation of the Cooler using the Tekelek 485 or the Tekelek 425 in manual mode is the same as for the Networker manual mode i.e. Pre-Wet. Note: A special version Tekelek 485 wall control with a maximum speed set potentiometer is available for Service Technicians. The potentiometer is clearly marked on the back of the control PCB,

20 the same as the Tekelek 425 wall control. The special wall control should only be used to deal with excessive air flow and or noise problem installations.

21 Page 14 Cooler Operation N-E3 Models (cont) Pre-Wetting the Filter Pads Tekelek 425 Wall Control Auto Mode Pre-Wet: If the power to the cooler has been ON, but the pump has been OFF longer than 15 minutes, then the wall control will power the cooler to perform a Pre-Wet. The fan light will flash during this Pre-Wet only. The Tekelek 425 will turn the pump ON for a 2 minute Pre-Wet, then turn it OFF again, and then the fan will commence running at minimum speed. N-E3 Pre-Wet: The N-E3 module has been pre programmed to Pre-Wet the filter pads whenever the pump is turned ON (manual & Auto modes). The Pre-Wet time depends on how long the pump has been turned OFF, allowing the pads to dry. If the pump has been OFF for less than 2 minutes (ShortDryPadTime), then no Pre-Wet will occur. If the pump has been OFF for less than 10 minutes (LongDryPadTime), but longer than 2 minutes (ShortDryPadTime), a 1 minute (ShortPrewetTime) will apply. If the pump has been OFF for longer than 10 minutes (LongDryPadTime) then a 2 minute (LongPrewetTime) will occur. If the power supply to the N-E3 has been interrupted, the first Pre-Wet will be 2 minutes (LongPrewetTime).

22 Cooler Operation N-E3 Models (cont) Tekelek 425 Auto Mode Operation Sequence If the Tekelek 425 wall control is turned ON in auto mode, in readiness to start the cooler as the temperature increases, then the following cooler starting sequences will occur. When the room temperature is lower than 1 0 C. below the set point, then neither the pump or the fan will operate. Page 15 If the pump and fan have both been OFF for longer than 15 minutes, when the room temperature reaches 1 0 C. below the set point, the Tekelek 425 will turn the pump ON for a 2 minute Pre-Wet, then turn the pump OFF again, then the fan will commence running at minimum speed. If the room temperature decreases with the operation of the cooler, then the fan will turn OFF again. When the room temperature is at C. below the set point the pump will turn ON again. This signal for the pump to turn ON may force the N-E3 to perform a Pre-Wet, depending on the time the pump has been OFF, and forces the fan to stop again for that period. i.e. 1 or 2 minutes When the room temperature is at C. above the set point, the fan speed will increase slowly, and will be at maximum speed at 4 0 C. above the set point. If when the wall control is turned ON, the room temperature is higher than the set point, then the fan and pump are initiated together and a Pre-Wet will occur, according to the time the pump has been OFF as described above.

24 Page 16 Cooler Operation N-E3 Models (cont) Pump Flush From the start of any pump operation, the pump will be timed to turn OFF for 15 seconds at 15 minute intervals, to allow the water head in the feed tube to the distribution spreader to back flush the pump, and keep it clear of blockages. This pump operation interruption does not affect any other Cooler functions. Networker Service Parameters for N-E3 The table below shows the default values for the N-E3 module. The 2 changes are highlighted: The flush cycle count has increased to 20. The long Pre-Wet time has been reduced to 120 seconds (2 minutes). 26 Page 17 N-E3 Water Management System FlushService Guide Table The higher the quality of the water supply to the cooler, the more tank refills Cooler can operate before a FlushService will be required. As the water quality also varies the Wet Test voltage readings, the appropriate FlushService cycle may be individually set to that water quality. The following table is a guide to the FlushService cycle rates based on the entering water supply quality. Before checking the voltage reading on the Trident probes, ensure that the Cooler tank, pads, and all 3 stainless steel probes are clean. The voltage reading should be based on the initial fill (fresh clean water) of the tank, when using this guide. The voltage may vary between the Low and High Level Water Sensors, so average the 2 voltage readings. Any change from the default flush count setting should be recorded on both the Coolers parameter change sticker and the service call sheet. 27 Cooler Operation BC-E1 Models General Operation First Fill Operation When the Cooler's pump is turned ON, the BC-E1 will treat this as starting the operation for the first time. Page 18 Because these models do not have a dry tank operation (no Dump), but do use the Trident Water Management, it is not known if there is any or how much water is in the tank from previous use. If both the High and Low Level Water sensors detect the water, then the tank is assumed to be full, and the pump can start immediately. When water is detected at the Low Level Water sensor, but not at the High Level Water sensor, the tank is filled to the High Level Water sensor before the pump is turned ON. If both the High and Low Level Water sensors do not detect water when the pump is required to operate, then the Water Inlet Solenoid is turned ON until the water level is detected at the High Level Water sensor (must be within 15 minutes), and the pump is turned ON when the water has reached the Low Level Water sensor. If the water is not detected on either sensor within the 15 minute filling time, then the BC-E1 will lockout the Pump and Water Inlet Solenoid, but allow the fan to continue function. The first fill operation is completed when the Water Inlet Solenoid turns OFF following one of the above filling sequences. Tank Refilling Operation During normal operation with both the fan and pump turned ON, water is evaporated from the tank. When the water signal circuit is lost at the Low Level Water sensor, the Water Inlet Solenoid is opened to fill again to the High Level Water sensor (must fill again within 3 minutes).

28 Page 19 Cooler Operation BC-E1 Models (cont) General Operation (cont) If the Cooler pump has been OFF longer than 2 minutes the Cooler is programmed to automatically Pre-Wet the filter pads when the pump is turned ON, before the fan can start operating. This is to ensure in all circumstances the filter pads reach full saturation, and optimum cooling potential when the fan starts. The automatic Pre-Wetting time of the dried filter pads, will depend on how long the Cooler's pump has been OFF, as follows: If the pump has been OFF for less than 2 minutes (ShortDryPadTime), then no Pre-Wet will occur. If the pump has been OFF for less than 10 minutes (LongDryPadTime), but longer than 2 minutes (ShortDryPadTime), a 1 minute (ShortPrewetTime) will apply. If the pump has been OFF for longer than 10 minutes (LongDryPadTime) then a 2 minute (LongPrewetTime) will occur. If the power supply to the BC-E1 has been interrupted, the first Pre-Wet will be 2 minutes (LongPrewetTime). 29 Cooler Operation BC-E1 Models (cont) Flush Service Operation The BC-E1 module program performs a tank flush at regular intervals, to dilute any salt and sediment build up as the unit is operating. The flush service will not affect the normal pump, or fan functions of the Cooler. Page 20 The BC-E1 module has a bridge link adjacent to the wall control loom plug terminal. This link determines when the tank flush is performed by the number of times the tank has been refilled. Bridge Link ON = 20 refills before a Flush Service. Bridge Link OFF = 10 refills before a Flush Service. Refer to diagram on page 22 for details. These refills are the number of times the water has filled to the High Water Level Sensor, and then evaporated down to the Low Water Level Sensor. Each sequence of set refills of the tank, will force a flush service operation, although the time between each Flush Service can vary, according to the conditions and Cooler setting. When the water level evaporates down to the Low Water Level Sensor for the set tank re fill for the Flush Service, the water inlet solenoid will open and fill the tank to the high water level, then remain open for a further 100 second period. The action of the fresh water entering, mixing and overflowing out from the tank, dilutes the salt and sediment ratio back to the original supply water condition.

30 Page 21 Cooler Operation BC-E1 Models (cont) Fan Operation DC Brake The BC-E1 will apply a brake to stop the rotation by energising the motor with DC Voltage to ensure the fan motor will not be energised and driven in the reverse direction. DC power will only be applied to the motor, if at the time the fan motor is powered, the motor has not been previously powered for a least 10 seconds. The DC brake will then remain ON for 5 seconds, before the power to start the fan motor is applied. Initial Start The fan motor will initially be powered with the maximum voltage for a 2 second hard start period to ensure the motor will turn even at low fan speed settings. The fan motor Start windings are independently powered, with only the motor Run winding phase controlled. The BC-E1 module has a bridge link to select between 2 maximum speed settings, although the actual fan speed will depend on conditions and system duct resistance's, they will approximate the control settings used in the Contour N-E3 module. Bridge Link ON = Model 1. Default for Contour L10, L20, & L30 Bridge Link OFF = Model 2. Default for Contour L40, & L50 Refer to diagram on page 22 for details.

The 8 Amp fuse will protect the controller from short circuit and/or high current draw, on the following circuits: Pump Water inlet solenoid Fan motor PCB relays

32 Abnormal Operation Trident Water Management System The BC-E1 module has been programmed to modify the water management handling (LIMP mode), if one of the water sensor probes is malfunctioning either open circuit or shorted closed circuit. Should both water sensor fail simultaneously, then the Cooler will be forced to operate in a Lockout mode. In LIMP mode, all timed function commence either at the opening or closing of the Water Inlet Solenoid, which ever is appropriate. Low Water Level Sensor (failure) Low Water Level Sensor - Fails to sense or is short circuit. Page 23 Fails to sense Open Circuit Water detected at the High Water Level Sensor, but not seen at the Low Water Level Sensor. From start up the Low Water Level Sensor is open circuit (normal), and water is still not detected when the High Water Level Sensor is closed circuit. Short circuit Closed circuit on Low Water Level Sensor, and open circuit on the High Water Level Sensor, 120 minutes the Water Inlet Solenoid closed, and pump operating. (i.e. low evaporation). Low Water Level Sensor Limp Mode Operation Pump starts operation at the High Water Level Sensor Water Inlet Solenoid closes when water is sensed at the High Water Level Sensor. Water Inlet Solenoid is timed OFF for 4 minutes, then refills to High Water Level Sensor again.

Page 24 Water is detected at the Low Water Level Sensor only, and Water Inlet Solenoid has open for 15 minutes. Short circuit: From start up, with the Low Water Level Sensor open circuit and the High Water Level Sensor closed circuit, which will force the Water Inlet Solenoid ON for 30 seconds, and the Low Water Level Sensor detects. With both High and Low Level Sensors closed circuit, and the Low Water Level Sensor becomes open circuit whilst the High Water Level Sensor remains closed circuit. High Water Level Sensor Limp Mode Operation On First Fill, the Water Inlet Solenoid closes after 3 minutes of the water detected at the Low Water Level Sensor. Water Inlet Solenoid opens when open circuit occurs on Low Water Level Sensor. Water Inlet Solenoid timed to fill for 30 seconds, then closes again.

34 Page 25 Abnormal Operation (cont) Trident Water Management System (cont) First Fill Operation with a LIMP mode When the BC-E1 module has been operating with a water sensor malfunction, then the first fill operation sequence will be as follows depending on the type of sensor failure and the current water levels. Low Level Water Sensor Failure & High Level Water Sensor Closed Circuit: Pump turns ON immediately and Water Inlet Solenoid remains closed - tank is full. Low Level Water Sensor Failure & High Level Water Sensor Open Circuit: Water Inlet Solenoid turns ON to fill to the High Level Water Sensor or for a 30 second fill period, then turns OFF, and the pump is turned ON. If the High Level Water Sensor does not detect the water within the 30 seconds filling period, the High Level Water Sensor is regarded as failed open circuit, and a lockout will result. High Level Water Sensor Failure & Low Level Water Sensor Closed Circuit: Water Inlet Solenoid turns ON for a 30 second fill period, then turns OFF, and the pump is turned ON. High Level Water Sensor Failure & Low Level Water Sensor Open Circuit: Water Inlet Solenoid turns ON for a 30 second fill period, then turns OFF, and the pump is turned ON when water is detected at the Low Level Water Sensor. If the Low Level Water Sensor does not detect the water within the 30 seconds filling period, the Low Level Water Sensor is regarded as failed open circuit, and a lockout will result.

Open Circuit Low & High Level Water Sensors: This will lockout the Water Inlet Solenoid and Pump operation, but will allow the fan to operate. (No water detected within 15 minutes of the Water Inlet Solenoid opening) One Sensor Permanently Open & One Sensor Permanently Closed Circuit: This will eventually, after a time period, lockout the Water Inlet Solenoid and Pump operation, but will allow the fan to operate. (Depends on detecting sequence of Sensor failure) Closed Circuit Low & High Level Water Sensors: This condition will keep the Cooler in a HOLD mode, holding the Water Inlet Solenoid OFF, but will allow the fan and pump to operate. (Closed circuit for longer than 120 minutes with pump/fan ON) If one sensor becomes open circuit, BC-E1 automatically resets.

36 Abnormal Operation (cont) Fan Motor Lockout The fan motor Run winding circuit from the BC-E1 is monitored for open circuit during fan ON operation. Should the circuit be open for longer than 10 seconds, the BC-E1 module will lockout the power supply to the fan. Page 27 The motor lockout will also be displayed by the flashing of the power LED located adjacent to the main isolating switch. This lockout condition can be reset by the cycling OFF and back ON the power supply to the BC-E1 module.
