New trash and recycling service for all residents spring, Commerce City is switching residential trash and recycling collection services to a fully automated system which reduces environmental impacts, improves neighborhood appearance and continues to provide quality pick-up service as the city grows. Residents will not be billed for standard City service. This change does not apply to residents using dumpster services. Eligible households will receive two 96-gallon cans, one for recycling and one for trash. QUESTIONS? 2 New Trash and Recycling Services Beginning this spring, all residents receive two new cans for free What do I need to do? It s easy! Service will not be interrupted and the switchover to the new cans should be seamless. Households will receive two new cans (one for trash and one for recycling) sometime between the end of February and through March. Check the schedule below to know which week to expect your new cans. Once your new cans arrive, begin using them for all trash and recycling needs. Continue following your pick-up schedule unless you are notifi ed of a change. Most households will not experience a change in schedule. After you receive your new cans, all trash and recycling materials MUST fi t into these new WM issued cans, otherwise they will not be picked up. Because the trucks are designed to automatically lift the new cans, items outside of these can will not be picked up. Dumpster service does not change. Improved service! More room for recycling! Each household receives a 96-gallon can for recycling. That s fi ve times the space the 18-gallon bins provide. Trash stays in its place. All 96-gallon cans have lids to prevent trash and recycling from blowing around. No more trash bags and blowing items along neighborhood streets. Easy-to-use containers. Sturdy wheels and handles make cans easy to maneuver. Less impact to the community. The new truck fl eet runs on compressed natural gas and are quieter and lighter in design. Thoughtful use of city funds. The new service saves the city more than $600,000 annually, which can now be reinvested into existing and new city services. All the new cans have lids that prevent trash and recycling from blowing around. New Can Delivery Calendar*: Check out the schedule to see when your new cans arrive! February/March 2015: New Can Delivery Schedule Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Monday Collection Days Receive Carts this Week February Tuesday Collection Days Receive Carts this Week March Wednesday Collection Days Receive Carts this Week Thursday Collection Days Receive Carts this Week Friday Collection Days Receive Carts this Week April *Most residents will NOT experience any changes in their collection days. Once you receive your can, just begin using it on your normal collection day. If your collection day changes, you will be notified via mail one week or more prior to a change. pg 2
3 The Can Placement Playbook: Handles facing house Lid closed Wheels at curb 3 feet from other containers, cars or any obstruction Cans must be placed out for pick-up by 7 a.m. and removed by 7 p.m. the day of service. The new service requires that cans are placed on the street, next to the curb, 3 feet from other cans, parked cars and other obstructions, with handles facing the house. The lids must be closed. Untie any ropes or tie-downs you may have used to secure the lid before collection day. Do not place concrete, dirt, rock, hot ashes, coals or other fl ammable materials such as solvents, oil, gas or paint in the container. Do not place household hazard waste in cans. All material must fi t inside the container. Drivers are not responsible for the cleanup of spillage that is a result of overfi lled carts or garbage not being bagged. If your container is not serviceable for some reason or is too full to service, the driver will leave a hanging tag on your container explaining the reason. Trucks will not return to collect containers that are placed out late, blocked, too close to obstructions or contain unauthorized material. Extra charges will apply for additional services. In the event of a holiday, collection schedules will appear on the city website, and provided in an annual service calendar. For holidays, service may be delayed by one day for the service week impacted. pg 3
4 INSTANT REPLAY: EIGHT QUESTIONS CAN FANS ASK 1 HOW MUCH DOES MY CAN HOLD? Every Commerce City household receives a new 96-gallon trash container and a 96-gallon recycling container at no charge. However, we realize that these sizes may not fi t the needs of every household. After May 1, 2015, if the household would prefer a smaller sized container, the household can choose the container that best fi ts their family needs. Below are some general guidelines for determining trash container sizes. Use the bag quantity comparison below to determine the container size your household may need. Tall kitchen bags are generally 13-gallon bags. Keep in mind the volumes from your garage, yard and other household areas The 96-gallon container holds about 6 bags of trash. The 64-gallon container holds about 4 bags of trash. The 32-gallon container holds about 2 bags of trash. 2 3 WHAT IF I NEED AN ADDITIONAL CAN? While 96-gallon containers for both trash and recycling are provided to you at no cost as part of the City s service plan, you can pay to have an additional container. An additional 96-gallon container is $2.80 a month, an additional 64-gallon container is $2.65 a month and an additional 32-gallon container is $2.50 a month. To order an additional can and/or extra services, contact Waste Management at HOW DO I MAKE SURE MY CANS ARE EMPTIED AND AVOID A PENALTY? If your trash or recycle can is not serviceable or is too full, the driver will leave a hanging tag on your can explaining the reason. This could result in additional fees and service delays for residents. To avoid fees and delays, be sure to follow the container guidelines, and ensure that: All material fi ts in container. All lids are tightly closed and not open. There are no additional bags, material or debris left outside of the container. Containers are at the curb with handles facing houses and placed 3 feet from other cans, cars and other obstructions. Use only WM issued cans. pg 4 Do not dispose of construction debris or hazardous waste.
5 4 5 WHAT IF MY CAN IS TOO BIG? WHAT DO I DO WITH MY 6 18-GALLON RECYCLE BIN? HOW DO I KEEP MY CANS CLEAN? Starting May 1, 2015 and through July 31, 2015, residents will be able to change their can size at no additional cost if the 96-gallon size does not work for their household. Residents are able to change their container size one time each year at no additional cost. A resident can change their container size more than one time a year for a fee at the expense to the resident. You have three options for your 18-gallon bin that previously collected recycling: Drop off your 18-gallon bins at Municipal Services Building (8602 Rosemary St., Commerce City, 80022) throughout the month of April: Monday - Friday, 7 a.m-5 p.m. and on Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Donate it to local schools so students can collect recycling in their classrooms. There will be an Earth Day event in April to collect bins for schools stay tuned for more details! The state of the art service fl eet operates on Compressed Natural Gas and offers: 7 WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE A WM CAN? Keep it for your own household use. As part of the new service program and switching to a fully automated collection system, residents will need to use only the trash and recycling containers provided. If you would like to use a WM can you currently own as an additional container, you will need to pay the corresponding monthly charges for service. You have to use a WM issued trash and recycling can. No other cans will be serviced. Clean your trash container when it is dirty or begins to smell. Cans that smell may attract animals. Tips for cleaning containers: After the garbage truck empties your trash container, put some dish soap in the can, put the can on its side, turn on the hose and spray out the dirt. Do not let wash water run into curb and gutter. Consider taking your trash can to a car wash to hose it out so there is no pollution to storm drainage systems. Adding ammonia, baking soda, or vinegar to a soapy solution will help with smells. Place a stick-on air freshener on the lid of your can to combat odors. Remember to keep it clean because we re all downstream! Pollutants washed into streets enter the city s storm water system which may then be discharged into local waterways and affect fragile ecosystems. 8 HOW DOES THIS NEW SERVICE HELP THE CITY? Historically, the city s trash and recycling service cost about $2 million a year. Switching to the new fully automated collection saves the city more than $600,000 annually, which can now be reinvested into existing and new city services. All the new cans have lids that prevent trash and recycling from blowing around. The state-of-the-art service fl eet that operates on compressed natural gas offers: CLEANER AIR QUIETER TRUCKS LOWER EMISSIONS LESS IMPACT ON CITY ROADS pg 5
