2 Solar Thermal Water Heating Systems how it works? Solar thermal systems from Joule are fully integrated solutions to meet most hot water needs. Solar thermal systems utilise free energy from the sun to produce domestic hot water, space and/or pool heating for residental or commercial applications. Joule Solar provides the domestic and commercial markets with complete solar packages that incorporate either Acapella Tube Solar Collectors or Navitas Solar Panels. The packages can also include solar cylinders, such as cyclone and come with all components required for the complete installation. Every package is custom-designed to suit the individual needs of each application. It includes the highest level of customer support from initial advice and site survey, through to bespoke design, installation, final commissioning and technical support. Solar collectors contain an absorber that heats up when exposed to both diffused and direct sunlight. The absorber collects and transfers the sun s heat through a network of tubes filled with a heat transfer fluid to a storage tank for later use. When the heat transfer fluid in the collectors is warmer than the bottom of the storage tank, the solar controller will turn on the solar pump station to transport the hot fluid from the collectors through a heat exchanger where the solar energy is transfered to the stored water. The collectors, pump station and storage tank are connected with supply and return piping that is insulated to minimise heat loss. As the system heats up or cools down, an expansion tank accounts for expansion and contraction of the heat transfer fluid. 3 Certificates 3 / Each Joule Solar Collectors has certificates from the following Institutes Thermal Collectors Device used to absorb energy from the sun, converting it into heat for producing hot water, space heating and / or pool heating. Pump Station Device that circulates the heat extracted from the sun within the collectors to the coil in the solar storage tank for producing hot water. Controller An electronic controller that manages the operation of a solar thermal heating system ensuring your system delivers high efficiency & reliability. Expansion Vessel Cylinder JOULE IRELAND Safety device used for absorption of excess pressure caused by thermal expansion of the heat transfer fluid under high temperatures. 4 Acapella System high efficiency evacuated tube solar system The Joule Acapella Solar system s unique tube design ensures a very high zero-loss collector efficiency figure of 85% based on the absorber. The unique method of fixing the tubes into the collector results in a significantly lower heat loss coefficient of 1.529w/m²K. The collectors easy to install frame ensures that the collector is securely fixed and mounted onto the roof every time. We are so confident of the quality of our solar collectors that we have tested our collectors to double and sometimes four times the requirements of EN12975:1-2 and they are Solar Keymark. The high efficiency collectors are further tested to determine the maximum positive and negative loading force that the collectors can resist. A touch of your finger is all you need to view detailed temperature charts, generate yield balances and monitor the status of your system. The VBus touch software is of course compatible with the iphone and the ipod touch as well. To visualise your individual system with VBus Touch, a ReSol controller with VBus data interface (e.g. DeltaSol BX), connected to the Internet via a dl2 datalogger, is required. The basic version of thevbus touch app is available for download free of charge in the App Store. More features and extensions are under way. The collector s black finish makes it an attractive addition to any roof. The unique patented ventilation system ensures the collector provides maximum output while reducing heat loss from inside the collector. We are so confident of the quality of our solar collectors that we have tested to double and sometimes four times the requirements of EN12975:1-2 and they are Solar Keymark. The high efficiency collectors are further tested to determine their maximum impact force resistance levels and the maximum positive and negative loading force that the collectors can resist. The main application areas include central heating or district heating systems that distribute heat or heating to individual consumers that are billled based on the thermal energy measured by the meter. The internal memory is used to record this data. These RHI Heat metering kits ensure you have everything that you require to meet the stringent RHI MID Class 2 standard. The inline ultrasonic sensor has no moving parts and requires zero maintenance even when installed on the most demanding closed loop systems. It comes complete with a digital LCD heat calculator that is fully programmed ready for installation. It has a pulsed output and mbus communications as standard. The integrator can be easily fixed to a wall or has the facility to clip into stndard DIN rail. The MID Matched pair of PT500 temperature sensors enable the integrator to measure the Delta Temperature to very high accuracy, ensuring that all of the heat used is captured by the calculator. The Joule thermal store has been designed with multi fuel heating systems in mind. The cylinder allows an easy installation of solid fuel, solar and boiler. The thermal store allows pressurised hot water heated from solid fuel safely and fully compliant with current plumbing practices and standards. The tank operates like a hot water cylinder in reverse. The tank is completely full of heating system water, the domestic hot water flows through a network of coils up through the centre of the tank supplying you with high flow rate pressurised hot water at piping hot temperatures. The thermal store is ideally suited to providing solar heat support and domestic hot water production simultaneously and easily. Copper or Stainless Steel? When choosing your Joule Thermal Store it is important to consider what pressure the heating system will be operating at. Our Stainless Steel thermal stores are better suited to high pressure heating systems because of their higher tensile strength. Our Copper thermal store is a better choice for areas of hard water. While Joule always require hard water to be treated so that is maintained below 200ppm Total Hardness in water conditions where the untreated levels are higher than this figure the Joule Copper Thermal Store is recommended.

11 Complete Joule System By using a Joule Thermal Store with your Joule Solar System this enables you to supplement both your heating and hot water loads. It is the simpliest & most efficient method of integrating solar into your heating system without the need for additional valves, pumps & controls on the solar system. A Thermal Store tank allows the solar to preheat the water in your heating system thus reducing the load on your main heating appliance. 12 Solar Hot Water Joule Direct Solar, Twin Coil, Triple Coil Direct Solar These cylinders are designed to have their primary heat source coming from electrical elements with a secondary Solar Coil for solar support. Twin Coil These cylinders are designed to be heated indrectly using of an oil or gas boiler. They come complete with one electric Element to intermittently support the water heating system. Triple Coil Joule Cyclone triple coil cylinders have been designed specifically with multi fuel applications in mind. Featuring a purpose designed solar coil, which allows maximum heat transfer of solar energy into the stored water and a 28mm (1 ) gravity coil which facilitates the use of gravity fed solid fuel appliance. The cylinders are suitable for use with a wide range of solar systems now available and are an efficient and environmentally friendly way of providing domestic hot water. Combine this with the use of excess heat from your solid fuel system during winter, this cylinder allows you to optimise the use of heat during both summer and winter. Cyclone triple coil cylinders must be plumbed open vented if an uncontrolled heat source such as a gravity fed solid fuel system is used with them.

13 13 / Phase 1 When boiler operates and there is no solar gain. Boiler heats up top half of cylinder from the point the boiler coil starts in the middle of cylinder. Because hot water rises only, when the boiler is operating and no solar gain is present only the top half of the cylinder can be heated. Phase 2 When hot water is used, hot water level rises and is replaced by cold water. The level of hot water rises in the cylinder thus reducing the amount of hot water in the cylinder. The cold water enters the cylinder from the base replenishing the used hot water. Phase 3 When there is a solar gain it heats cold water at the bottom of the cylinder, thus reducing the load on the boiler. Solar gain enters the cylinder through the bottom coil. This preheats the cold water before it rises up to the boiler coil. The greater the level of solar gain, the more the cold water is preheated, the less the boiler must heat. The collector s black finish makes it an attractive addition to any roof. 24 Pump Stations Joule Solar Pump Station The hydraulic solar unit used on the primary circuit of solar systems between the cylinder and the solar collectors. The pump is activated by the signal of the differential temperature controller. The unit, complete with the insulation, is composed of a flow line which includes a visual flow balancing valve with filling and drain group, a circulation pump, a ball valve with built check-valve and thermometer, a 6 bar safety group and of a return line consisting of a ball valve and a de-aireator.

All ZUWA pumps from the 2001 series can be powered with any regular electric or cordless drill and screwdriver, at any time, at any place. Connect the shaft of the pump with the chuck. The bit well of the drill fully stabilises the system. In contrary to similar pumps on the market this pump is fully self priming. It has a metal body instead of plastic and a shaft with top quality ball bearings which guarantees a long lifetime. All ZUWA impeller pumps are dry self priming from a depth of 3 metres, no pre filling required. The flexible impeller easily copes with solids in stained liquids. High temperature metal container for piping the safety valve discharge into. Many installers have faced the problem of where to run the outlet discharge connection of the safety valve to. We are asked often, Can I pipe it into drains/soil pipes/over the roof etc? Is the fluid toxic? Is it safe to let the glycol mix discharge over roof tiles? - No. The answer is a suitable container. We have seen often the discharge pipe run directly into an empty glycol plastic container, but most installers want to complete the job with a professional finish. The container fills this void.
