The pop up will have you enter your basic information. After you have registered, merely click login it will ask you for your address to use as an ID. Slide 6 Unico vs. Conventional High Static Pressure* All fittings MUST be tightly sealed Duct efficiency *NOT consider high static pressure by ASHRAE Ratings Unico Systems are pressurized. We have much higher static pressure than conventional sheet metal HVAC systems. As a result, there is less duct leakage because leaks are more noticeable

Slide 7 Much Higher Discharge Velocity SDHV Conventional Velocity, ft/min Much higher velocity, than a conventional sheet metal system design. However, very little air (maximum of 35 CFM) is used comparatively, plus there is a special sound deadening tubing used Slide 8 Unico vs. Conventional Roughly half the CFM ( vs. 400) High Static Pressure (Avg. 1.5 w.c.) Refrigeration Coil vs. A/C Coil Greater Temp. Drop in AC Greater Temp rise in Heat Pump 1000 to 2000 fpm velocity Aspiration vs. Diffusion and Throw Here are the major differences between Unico (SDHV) and a conventional designed sheet metal furnace, The last item, aspiration, is the heart of the Unico system and will be explained in detail next Slide 9 Aspiration vs. Throw Returns MUST be opposite supply. Gentle Air Movement Throughout the Room Return can be anywhere Narrow Band of High Velocity Air Dead Zone Drafts Dead Zone Aspiration Mixes the air, conventional systems Throw, Diffuse and Return the air. The high velocity air creates a Venturi effect at the outlet which creates a slight negative pressure at the outlet, which draws in and mixes the air. No drafts, no streaking of dirt and less than 2 degrees temperature difference in the room

Slide 10 Aspiration Creates Low Pressure Area at the Outlet Discharge air quickly mixes with room air lowering the supply air temperature more than 22 in 12 Aspiration quickly mixes conditioned air with the room air. In this demonstration of aspiration in action the air temperature leaving the outlet is 119 F (48.5 C) which quickly drops to 97 F ( 36.1 C) within 12 inches (304.8 mm). Similar ambient air mixing takes place in cooling. Slide 11 2" Appro Sound x Outlets Level db(a) CFM /ton Decibel Levels Recommended application ultra low Multimedia Rooms, high altitude very low Rooms with hard surfaces (wood or concrete floors and walls) Less Airflow: Less Noise Quiet enough to be used in recording studios, 20 CFM or less is below the 25 decibel curve. low ** Rooms with carpet, drapes, furniture normal Large rooms or where sound is not critical (minimum number of outlets) excessive Industrial environments Slide 12 Where is Unico Used? Applications Residential: Historic, Retrofit, Custom Home Commercial: Universities, Churches, Offices Industrial: Spot Cooling And many more Anywhere space is limited and comfort is desired, you can use Unico.

Slide 13 The Total Comfort System Unico is a great tie in with hydronic heat, particularly radiant floor. Can provide fresh air, such as ERV s and HRV s as well as providing a superior heating and cooling system Slide 14 Small Space Biggest reason we are used is right here Slide 15 You are looking up a twenty foot ceiling. The Unico outlets are wood circles in the middle of the panels.

Slide 16 Any Condensing Unit When using a Unico Coil with a TXV (Thermal Expansion Valve) any major equipment brand of air conditioning condensing unit or heat pump may be used Slide 17 The Unico System also works with Geothermal Heat Pumps, they can be set up for refrigerant based or waterto-water. We make a chilled water coil, then can also handle hot water for these applications Slide 18 The iseries by Unico The iseries by Unico is an inverter heat pump that is meant to work exclusively with the Unico System. The Unico System uses a different coil and blower module, as this unit utilizes EEV (Electronic Expansion Valve) technology instead of TXV (thermal expansion valve). There is a separate training series on this available to you

Slide 19 Ratings Classified as SDHV indoor units The AHRI classifies the Unico System as SDHV (Small Duct High Velocity), these listings can be found at under the classification Air Conditioners. To find a specific match up, go to the selection of the outdoor unit of your choice and the use Unico System as your indoor coil. You can also use SDHV as a category to get a broader list of matchups Slide 20 Energy Efficiency Differences SDHV Conventional Thermal losses 4% 8% Duct leakage <5% 15-20% Duct efficiency* >80% 50% Thermal losses are lower because a) less surface area, b) higher density insulation, c) enhanced R-factor because of cylinder effect... This referenced in the ICC code under section PMG-1009 System efficiency, Btuh/W (SEER x duct efficiency) * Based on ASHRAE Standard 152 Slide 21 We are a pre-designed, preengineered system from the return air to the supply outlets, from one to five tons. This picture shows the three sections that make up a Unico System: Return Air, Air Handler, Supply

Slide 22 RETURN AIR No different from Conventional HVAC ECXEPT*: Only 250 CFM per ton Use.05 w.c. static pressure *Refer to Unico Tech Note 106 As with all ducted systems, we need to Breathe In as well as Breathe Out, the only real differences with the Unico System are: Only 250 cfm per ton is needed The aspiration principle usually eliminates the need for multiple return air ducts Slide 23 Here is the Unico Return Air Section, we have, from left to right: An Adapter A Return Air Duct A Return Air Box and Filter Slide 24 Return air design Conventional air return Typically ceiling for attic units High for cooling/low for heating Usually at the top of a stairway The Unico System return duct system is a conventional duct system, only smaller because the system uses less air. Typically, this return register is mounted in the ceiling of a central hall near the unit when the unit is mounted in the attic. Multiple returns should be used when conditioning two or more spaces that do not communicate with each other. Avoid creating a negative pressure zone near gas fired equipment. It is best to position the return high, near the ceiling, for cooling systems and low, near the floor for heating systems.

When heating and cooling use two returns, one high and one low. If you can only use one position it for the most important season. An open stairwell behaves like a chimney. Hot air will rise between floors so the heating load for the first floor will be higher than expected from a typical load calculation. As with supply outlets the return air grill placement should be discussed with the client. Slide 25 Typical Return Stairwell acts like a chimney in the summer months, the hole that we cut for our return air box is also the size of most of our air handlers, making the installation easier Slide 26 Q Bands Included Conventional disposable filter is standard with the return air box, but any third-party filter will work, provided that the static resistance at the rated air flow is less than.10 w.c. Remember, we only need to return 250 CFM per ton

Slide 27 Check Unico Resistance Presentationof Air Filter No more than.10 w.c. pressure drop at rated CFM Here is a manufacturer s (Honeywell) rating of resistance in inches of water column at a given CFM. As you can see, since our three ton unit only needs 750 CFM, we are compatible with high MERV filters Slide 28 Unico Can be used in conjunction with IAQ Here we have an electronic air cleaner, a humidifier and a UV light bulb We help you to sell IAQ, you can add third party filters, humidifiers and UV light bulbs. Be sure to have all of these on the RETURN air side. With humidifiers, do not use these where the air handler is in a conditioned space. Refer to our tech notes as to connecting Unico to specific humidifiers, such as power, steam, etc. Slide 29 Return Air Section Return Air Duct Sound Attenuated Flexible Insulated: Mylar, Fibreglass with Spun-bond Nylon Core Returns air to Air Handler Attaches to Return Air Box fitting with large white plastic cable tie Please be sure to use OUR return air duct if possible. It is especially from the same material that we use on our supply tubes to keep the system quiet. It is sold in a twelve foot length that can be easily compressed to have shorter runs.

Slide 30 Hot Water return Adapter Cooling only return Adapter Return Air Section Return Air Adapter Hot Water Return Adapter (Suitcase Latches) Cooling only Return adapter (Flange) Return air duct attaches with large white cable tie (found in grill box) Two types of return air adapter: For Cooling Only applications, use the self-tapping metal screws provided with the air handler For Hot water Coil and Multiple Return Air Boxes, use the adapter that uses suitcase latches to connect Slide 31 Multiple Return Air 99% of Retrofit have only 1 return, However, multiple returns are okay Almost all of our retrofit jobs have one return, as the aspiration concept is taking the role of the return air duct in keeping the air flow mixed. However, there are some codes that require more returns, such as each floor or each room is required to have a separate return. Be sure to follow ACCA Manual D recommendations Slide 32 Slot for disposable filter, note the two clips on the top, makes installation much faster

Control Box Plenum Ad2) Module Return ERV r HRV Field Supplied Insulated box with duct collars Outdoors Slide 33 RAP INSTALLATION How this works in the real world. You just cut in a space into the box for each return air duct Slide 34 Typical ERV/HRV Layout This is another third-party item. ERV s are used more for the warmer climates and HRV s in the colder climates. They can easily be connected to the return air side of the Unico System Slide 35 Unico Air Handlers

Slide 36 Slide 37 Air Handlers 5 Sizes 1 to 1 ½ Tons 2 to 2 ½ Tons 2 ½ to 3 Tons 3 to 3 ½ Tons 4 to 5 Tons All modular except for U1218 New Vertical Air Handler, Up-flow only, one piece Five Sizes: 1 to 1 ½, 2 to 2 ½,2 ½ to 3, 3 to 3 ½, 4 & 5 Tons, these units are modular (except for the U1218 and Vertical Air Handlers) so they are multi-poise (can go up, down, or sideways) Slide ¾ 13 ¾ 13 ¾ 17 ½ Parts match-up with the A/C and Hot water coil. Notice that when you order the M4860 coil it comes with a 6 spacer... Pulls air across instead of pulling the air 17 ½ 13 ¾ 13 ¾ 17 ½

Slide 39 Air Handler Modules easily lock together with suitcase latches Slide 40 Slab Coil Our Four Row (Air-Conditioning) Coil. This is a medium temperature refrigeration coil and is thicker than a normal airconditioner Slide Coil Module New MC4860 with spacer in vertical position. See how the coil extends beyond the casing, necessitating the use of the spacer. A drip pan is included with the spacer for use in horizontal applications

Slide 42 Spacer Module Parts match-up with the A/C and Hot water coil. Notice that when you order the M4860 coil it comes with a 6 spacer... Pulls air across instead of pulling the air for better thermal transfer Slide 43 Horizontal Air Handler Mounting Note the use of rods to transmit noise to the ceilings, some installers use chains instead of rods and others use a field fabricated platform of 4 x6 wood blocks and vibration dampeners Slide 44 Four and Five Ton Vertical Air Handler Only the four and five ton system needs to be installed this way, we have a new one piece Upflow vertical air handler for the 2430, 3036 and 3642 sizes. The U1218 has two drain pans and is meant to install as either a vertical or horizontal application

Slide 45 New one-piece vertical air handler Unico Vertical Air Handler Perfect for closets, utility rooms or under stairs Packaged Painted Quite Operation Less than 24 width 42 and 44 In Height Less than 5 feet install height Ready for optional hot water or Chiller coil Slide 46 Unico Vertical Air Handler Size Dim (IN) Tonnage Capacity x20x x24x x25x Uses an A coil instead of a slab coil. Can use either hot water or electric furnace as a backup heater. Designed to fit into a closet Slide 47 Widths and Depths of the VAH

Slide 48 Slide 49 Blower Module The blower module comes in several configurations. Each blower is balanced to Unico specs and features direct drive motors located in the air stream. An easy to adjust restrictor plate is mounted to the exterior of the unit for system balancing after startup. Slide 50 Types of Blowers Blower Module

Slide 51 The Unico System Air Handler Types of Blowers Can be one of two styles of motors PSC (Standard) EC (Variable Speed) Slide 52 ECM PSC Side by side comparison of the old PSC motor (on right) with the new ECM. Silver item at the bottom is the controller, these are very sensitive to high heat, therefore don t use a hot water coil with entering water temperature of greater than 150 degrees Slide 53 For checking the standard single speed blower motor. Make sure it reads True RMS and can read to.001 amps, just clamp to one of the motor leads and record the amp reading. If it is too high, then you can adjust the CFM with the restrictor plate (included in blower)

Slide 54 Blower Specs Amps = Cfm, this label is provided for your convenience on all standard single speed blowers Slide 55 The restrictor plate can be used to adjust the airflow of the standard single speed blower module. Use this to try to make the amp draw as close as the aforementioned label recommends. If you still can t get the proper amp draw with the restrictor plate wide open, you are probably short of outlets Slide 56 SCB Board EC Blower The control board for the Variable Speed (EC) motor. One control board is used for all five sizes of blowers. There is a USB port included in the control board for an optional connection of a PC based computer

Slide 57 How does it work? Uses the Emerson (NIDEC) EC motor, a very common industry motor, the M055 Series Controller can be ordered separately The controller for the motor is specific for the designs of the Unico system. Sets a constant CFM by adjusting the RPM to conform with the Unico System fan curve Slide 58 Fan Curve Uses up to 45% less energy Much slower RPM Air Handler Much Quieter In the following Slide we have 1250 CFM at 1400 RPM (MAX) 488 watts of power consumption See additional speeds for Stage 1 and Fan Slide 59 Blower Curve cfm 1.2 w.c. 488 watts (Y2) cfm 1.2 w.c. 210 watts (G) cfm 1.2 w.c. 280 watts (Y1) EC motors use about half of the energy of a PSC (or standard) blower module. Because of this more manufacturers are switching away from PSC to EC. As you can see, our largest blower module uses about half the energy of a coffee maker

Slide 60 Unico ECM Features Doesn t Need a Restrictor Plate Operates at 120 or 230V (different part number EC1 or EC2) Can be setup two way Use Defaults Program with Laptop Slide 61 Multiple Wiring Configurations There are multiple easy to follow wiring configurations depending on your equipment and requirements. They are located in Bulletin Slide 62 The same solid state control board is used on all Variable Speed motors. Wiring is point-to-point for ease of use. The board is protected with a 2 amp automotive fuse (a spare fuse is also included with the board)

Slide 63 LED Lights Default Settings LED Lights: Power, indicated 24v supply; Heat, unit in heating mode, PCB Control, something on the board s software is causing the fan to run. The green check marks on the computer program can be unchecked to give you more control on setting the Y1 and Y2 speeds Slide 65 How to Connect Use a laptop to connect to a PC based computer. The USB to USB cord and software disc are included with the control board. It s not required that you use a laptop, but remember, if you set the system up without the laptop it will be programmed for 250 CFM per ton

Slide 72 Electric Furnace Slide 73 2 ½ KW 5 KW 7 ½ KW 10 KW 15 KW 20 KW Sizes Available Slide 74 INSTALLING AN ELECTRIC DUCT HEATER Now mounts directly to the blower module In the past UL requirements made us put this four feet downstream from the air handler Feature and benefit here

Slide 75 Slide 76 Be sure that the control box for the electric furnace is located as shown in this picture Slide 77 Be Sure to Follow Correct Airflow Airflow MUST be in the direction of the arrow on the electric furnace. The elements will not energize until airflow is detected.

Slide 78 Supply Air Components Slide 79 Pre-Fabricated Fiberglass Duct 6 foot sections, pre-fabricated, or flat. Can be in R4 or R6. R8 is not manufactured by Unico and it is recommended for R8 to use sheet metal Slide 80 Metal Plenum 26 gauge recommended Sleeved or Wrapped with Correct Insulation Single wall pipe, needed in either 7, 9 or 10 round or the rectangular equivalent is needed depending on the tonnage of the system. 26 gauge metal is recommended, the pipe can then be insulated to the proper R factor

Slide 81 Sheet Metal Installation Kit An installation kit for the metal plenum, this includes all the necessary items for attaching the supply tubing to the metal plenum. Clockwise from the top we have: A Coupler for slicing supply tubing segments together A metal take-off that connects the plenum to the supply tube A standard white round outlet A thermal overlay gasket A gasket to fit between the metal takeoff and the plenum A winter supply shut-off A balancing orifice kit Toggle bolts and screws for attaching the white round outlet Clamps: Aluminum for sound attenuator, black for aluminum core tubing Tape rings for making the final connection to the supply tubing Slide 82 Fibreglass Installation Kit Fiberglass installation kit, all parts are the same as the metal installation kit, except we have a spin-in take-off for the fiberglass duct

Slide 83 Aluminum core clamp, used for attaching the sound attenuator tubing to the takeoff (either the metal take-off or the spin-in fiberglass take-off) Slide 84 Making a Fiberglass Takeoff Close up of the fiberglass take-off. To install, cut a two inch hole in the fiberglass duct, bend the take-off at the rivet and spin the take-off into the fiberglass. It has its own self-sealing gasket Slide 85 An overview of how the metal take-off is made: Prepare the plenum and insulate Cut an X shaped pattern where you want to make the take-off Place the smaller gasket on the bottom of the take-off Drill a 2" hole Use four self-tapping metal screws to connect the take-off to the plenum. Place the thermal overlay gasket on top of the fitting Place a tape ring on top of the assembly Connect the supply tubing with the appropriate clamp

Slide 86 For Insulation Greater Than R4 Detailed drawing of how to seal the insulation on the plenum after the take-off is made Slide 87 Sound Attenuator Tubing Coupling to Plenum Silver ring over centre core. Secure at least 2 core ribs over the nipples on the takeoff fitting Clamp ring with UPC54 Not Pliers The procedure shown in the picture is how we use the clamps to attach the supply tubing to the take-off. Be sure to use our UPC54 tool, not a pair of pliers

Slide 88 An overview of how to use the UPC54. Open the pliers completely and crush the ears of the clamp as shown in the picture Slide 89 Tubing and Outlets Sound Attenuating Tubing Aluminum Core Duct We make two styles of supply tubing. On the left is our sound attenuated tubing, sold in 12 (twelve) foot lengths On the right is our aluminum core tubing, sold in 25 (twenty-five) foot lengths A minimum of three (3) feet of sound attenuated tubing is required at the end of every aluminum core tubing run Slide 90 Sound Attenuator Tubing UPC-26C-6 12 in Length 6 Lengths per box Unico System Patented Product As you can see, the nylon mesh material used to make the sound attenuating tubing is porous, the air pressure is sealed by the Mylar jacket. Take care not to rip the outer jacket as pressure will escape

Slide 91 Aluminium Supply Tubing UPC in Length 4 Lengths per box Unico System Patented Product Used for Extended Lengths Black clamp rings only The aluminum tubing is very rugged and is like a chimney liner. The point to remember is that you MUST have at least three (3) feet of sound attenuating tubing at the end of the aluminum core tubing run or the system will be noisy Slide 92 NO Acoustical Properties Must have three feet of Sound Attenuator Tubing Used for longer runs. NO noise abatement so 3 feet is required for ending section Slide 93 Supply Duct Have greater than a five inch radius Try to make supply duct end like a Question Mark Too tight a bend causes noise

Slide 94 Two and ½ Duct Available in Aluminum Core Sound Attenuating Tubing R4, R6, and R8 Insulation Values Both styles of tubing are available in insulation ranging from the standard R3.3 to as high as R8. Use of higher R values is dependent upon the local code. Of course, higher R values will mean a larger O.D. on the supply R3.3 is about 3 ½ and R8 is about 6 O.D. Slide 95 Why 2 ½ Duct? Fewer Outlets Needed Average 45 cfm per outlet, five per ton Saves Time as a result Same sound level as two inch, but more airflow Uses a new threaded outlet (left hand thread) 2 ½ I.D. Duct is also available, it requires fewer outlets, as you have the same sound level with 45 CFM with these as opposed to 35 CFM with 2 outlets. Slide 96 New Screw-In Outlet Left-hand threaded outlet, used with both two inch and two and one-half inch tubing.

Slide 97 Even side by side Makes it much easier than conventional. Go back to aspiration principles. Remember a change of only 3 degrees with on inside wall to outside wall 20 feet away (2 degrees or less with an outside wall 15 feet away) Slide 98 Limitations on 2 ½ Duct Only 2 Tubing Can be used with the following: Fiberglass Duct Slotted Outlets Fire Rated Outlets For a few applications only the 2 tubing can be used Slide 99 Unico Outlets Outlets are available in a wide variety: Plastic Wood Round Slotted Brass Chrome, etc. Outlets are very important to the homeowner and can add more profit to your job

Slide 100 Outlets - Round White Standard in the plenum install kits 2 discharge hole. 5 Flange Includes locating screws and spring clips Can be Painted to Match Standard white outlet is included with all installation kits, it has a high fiberglass content and can be easily painted. It looks a lot like a recessed light fixture in a ceiling Slide 101 Can you find the outlet? It s right in front of the radiator. He painted it to match the tile Slide 102 Application: Cathedral Ceilings Features One-piece construction Lightweight Ribbed for clamps Integral tape-ring Simple installation Compatible with Unico toggles Paintable Options: Metal plated chrome, brass, aluminum Sloped Outlets UPC-56B Use a thermal barrier air curtain in vaulted ceilings, you place the sloped (either 15 or 25 degrees) where the vault starts, this keeps the warm air from rising to the ceiling in the heating cycle 90 slotted

Slide 103 Outlets - Wooden Screen Wood outlets add value to the homeowner and the installing contractor. All wood outlets come with a ¼ hardware screen to protect against foreign objects. We have a wide variety of woods to choose from Slide 104 An example of how easily the wood outlets blend into the floor. Slide 105 All we really need to make aspiration work is a 2 hole, here they are using Unico in a log home where space was extremely tight

Slide 106 UPC56-FR Fire Rated Outlet Our Fire Rated Outlet (part number UPC56FR) is a UL-555 rated device that will seal off the opening if the air handler reaches above a certain temperature, closing off any smoke. These are only available for two inch duct. Many commercial buildings will require these to meet code Slide 107 Slotted Outlet A slotted outlet is perfect for high side wall applications, where we would have less than five inches radius. They can also be used for floor and ceiling applications. We make these in the 90 degree slot as shown here and in a straight in slot. Attractive to the homeowner and the installing contractor, looks and value Slide 108 Also available in straight in slot

Slide 109 UPC101 if there is NO space available, we need to use fiberglass plenum with this to absorb the noise. At LEAST SEVEN (7) per ton are needed. Slide 110 Use either fiberglass or lined sheet metal, the plenum is now the acoustical material. Note: MUST BE FIBERGLASS or LINED SHEETMETAL Slide 111 Plaster frame kit for working on new construction for the ease of the drywall contactor. Similar to a recessed light kit

Slide 112 Turbometer Cookie Cutter Tools UPC 54 EVERYONE MUST HAVE: 1. UPC54 and 2. Turbometer, the Cookie Cutter shown in the lower left is only used with the fiberglass plenum UPC 55-5 UPC52-50 UPC53-50 Slide 113 The Rules of Unico Here we will give you the basics of designing and installing a Unico System A Brief Overview Slide 114 How to Design a Unico System

Slide 115 Introduction This consists of two parts: Load Calculation: Determining the proper amount of energy for heating and cooling Duct Layout: How to properly size and install the Unico Small Duct High Velocity System There are two parts to a design and layout The Load required The layout and installation of the Unico System Slide 116 Load Analysis LOAD ANALYSIS Quick Sizer (Unico Bulletin 40-20) This makes a number of assumptions ASHRAE Manual J Very detailed, beyond the scope of this class Detailed load calculations are beyond the scope of our training. We assume that everyone uses industry standards, such as ASHRAE Manual J. We use the Wrightsoft load calculation program, but there are many other companies that will do load calculations. Of course, as with any program, the output is only as good as the information that goes into it Slide 117 Outlets in a Room Self-explanatory If we have 200 c.f.m per ton, then each outlet will have anywhere from c.f.m Each outlet will be about 2000 btus cooling* and 4000 btus of heating Outlets can be anywhere it doesn t blow directly on someone or cause something to move * In reality closer to btus

Slide 118 Rules of Unico to Remember Slide 119 Airflow Airflow Airflow Airflow Can t emphasize the importance of the airflow to the Unico System. 95% of all problems relate to a lack of airflow Slide 120 Not Equal Friction This is what most think of for Warm Air Systems Conventional designs for warm air systems are very complicated. A lot of calculations need to be made in order to be sure there is the proper airflow at the furthest register. Normally, we start off with.6 w.c. at most and then use either equal velocity or equal friction to determine the sizes of our trunks. A mistake here will result in poor airflow in the house

Slide 121 Unico System Uses Static Regain An Example of Static Regain This is the idea that the Unico System uses: Static Regain. When the system starts up the air flows to the end cap and pressurizes the system, much like a garden sprinkler. In both cases the amount of airflow at the furthest outlet from the air handler will have approximately the same outlet as the outlet closest to the air handler. Of course, there is friction loss in the plenum, but it is minimal Slide 122 Plenum Sizing Think of Small (7 ) Medium (9 ) Large (10 ) Remember these are MINIMUMS This can also be checked by using a Ductulator such as those supplied by companies like Hart and Cooley. We are going to figure cfm/ton at 1.2 w.c. If needed we can always go one size larger Slide 123 Static Pressure Anywhere up to 1.5 w.c. is acceptable This will vary when we have less restriction Today s system is very unusual as it has only six foot runs of two inch tubing, therefore the static readings will be a little less than usual Only returns that have OVER.15 w.c. need to be included in total static pressure This is for our Hands On class, where we install a system with a minimum of plenum and fittings, usually 15 of plenum and one bull-head tee.

Slide 124 Plenum Sizing Diameter Max CFM Typical Model or This is a table using a duct calculator to determine the MINIMUM plenum size in round pipe for each system 10* *Required for M4860 Slide /40 Rule Split 50/50, no more than 60/40 Applies to all tees If you have a tee in the system split the flow as close to 50/50 as possible, no more than 60% of the air flow on either side of the tee. This rule is true for every tee in the system although it is most important for the first tee. Q: Assuming that we are using 20 Fully Rate Outlets. What is the max on each side of the tee and of those tees? A: 12 on one side Slide /30 RULE No more than 30% of CFM on side branch Turn a tee 90 degrees and you have a side branch (do not use the turning vane). The side branch can have no more than 30% of the total CFM.

Slide 127 Different Plenum Layouts Many designs are available for plenums, for more information see our Bulletin 30-01, also, think of these as being in 3 dimensions, so the H pattern could come from a basement, tee off at each floor level Slide 128 1/14/2016 Unico System 128 The best layout of all. Now pressures are equal throughout the system. It doesn t matter how many outlets you have on either side of a bull-head tee. Also when calculating Equivalent Length (EL) you do not count the two elbows and the plenum run between them Slide 129 Space Takeoffs evenly Maintain spacing between takeoffs as evenly as possible. Minimum 6 inches between takeoffs and 12 inches from end cap.

Slide Inch Rule You must be a minimum of 24 inches from the exit of the blower before any fitting or take off. Failure to do so will result in turbulence and noisy outlets Slide 131 Space Takeoffs evenly Maintain spacing between takeoffs as evenly as possible. Minimum 6 inches between takeoffs and 12 inches from end cap. Slide 132 For Every 5 feet Over 10 You Lose 10% of Capacity 25 ft.. run is 70% of an outlet 24.5 CFM of air We have a FULL outlet at twelve (12) feet of supply tubing, either with 2 or 2 ½ duct. As the runs lengthen, there is less air delivered due to friction losses. For example a 2 supply duct at twelve feet delivers 33 CFM (based upon 1 ½ static pressure), if we increase this to thirty feet we only deliver 20 CFM or 60% of an outlet. This is one of the biggest causes of failure is not enough FULL outlets. 2 ½ duct is more forgiving, but again, friction loss must be taken into account

Slide 133 Bulletin30-100( ).pdf Unico Commissioning Sheet At the end of every job, it is a good habit to run a commissioning report. It takes a picture of how the Unico System was working when you left the job. If you are working with a General Contractor, have him sign off on this, if there are any changes made without your knowledge you are covered Slide 134 The first part of commissioning is similar to the information that we need to register a job for warranty: Name, address, contact information and model and serial numbers Slide 135 The next section deals with the airflow output of the blower module and the refrigerant system. The airflow at the motor is easily determined by: Checking the amp draw on the single speed motors and comparing it with the label Counting the flashes of the PCB LED at the control board Check refrigerant pressures with compound gauges. Check the charge by using the superheat that the outside unit manufacturer recommends.

Be careful of more than a 27 degree delta tee, as this would indicate low airflow Slide 136 The second page of the commissioning sheet shows the output of each outlet. To measure this use the Turbometer to record wind speed in knots. Take this number and double it to get your CFM (for 2 ½ duct you need to multiply the knots times 2.37). This will show precisely how the system is performing Slide 137 Thank you for taking this class! Think about using the Unico System for your next HVAC project
