28 TECHNICAL OVERVIEW DRAINAGE SYSTEMS PROPERTIES AND PERFORMANCE upvc Pipes derive their load bearing capacity from their inherent stiffness and the characteristics of the bedding and sidefill material used. When a vertical load is imposed on a flexible pipeline, it will deform (radial deformation) and the resulting horizontal force is transmitted to the undisturbed trench wall via the sidefill material. A state of equilibrium is reached and any deflection of the pipe ceases when the horizontal reaction of the sidefill corresponds to the transmitted vertical load. The design of a upvc pipeline must therefore take into account the interaction between the pipe and the bedding material. This will enable upvc pipes to withstand imposed loads without excessive deflection whilst also maintaining their ability to cope with possible ground movement without fracturing. The minimum specific tangential initial stiffness of Marley Solid Wall drain pipe is given in the table below. 29 TECHNICAL OVERVIEW DRAINAGE SYSTEMS CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Marley pipes and fittings are highly resistant to acids/alkalis, making them ideal for installation in aggressive soils and other demanding conditions. No attack at temperatures up to 60 C even by concentrated alkalis. However, in stressed applications, design stress must be reduced significantly, e.g. by 40-50% for 10% sodium hydroxide. Not suitable. No effect. No attack at room temperature but design stress must be reduced by half. No attack if dry. Not suitable if moist. Not suitable. Not suitable. Not suitable. Little attack even by the strongest, such as concentrated potassium permanganate, but design stress must be reduced by 25%. No effect up to 60 C. No attack. 28

31 UNIVERSAL SHOWER TRAP INSTALLATION The Marley Universal Shower Trap offers the choice of a vertical or horizontal outlets. min 77 mm max 85 mm HORIZONTAL OUTLET a) 40mm - Apply PVC Solvent Weld to the inside of the horizontal outlet of the shower trap and to the outside of the 40mm pipe. Insert the 40mm pipe into the shower trap outlet. Allow to dry. b) 50mm - Apply PVC Solvent Weld to the outside of the horizontal outlet of the shower trap and to the inside of the 50mm Socket. Push the 50mm PVC Socket over the shower trap outlet. Allow to dry. Attach to the vertical outlet of the shower trap. c) Apply PVC Solvent Weld to the outside of the 50mm pipe, attach to the vertical outlet of the shower trap. HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT & ROTATION Remove winglets by hand or pliers to the required height, if space is no problem, keep the winglets attached for maximum flow. The design allows for an adjustment of 360, to suit alignment with tiles and the direction of the outlet. INTEGRATED SLOPE Using the adaptor allows for space saving, and ensures that a level installation is achieved while maintaining a slope (2 30 ) allowing for a better drainage. Slope created by the adaptor to facilitate drainage and prevent water retention and stagnation. 31

32 ENDURA GREASE TRAP INSTALLATION The Marley Endura Grease Trap may be installed on the floor, partially in the floor, or fully recessed below the floor to best suit the situation. Whichever installation configuration is used, make sure you locate the grease trap in an area that allows for ease of maintenance. Placement should allow the cover to be easily removed for cleaning. A minimum clearance is required above the cover of the grease trap (45-50cm) to allow removal of the internal baffles for a complete cleanout. With the cover removed, all internal surfaces should be visible. Installations requiring long runs of pipe (exceeding 7.6m) to reach the trap are to be avoided. This precaution will reduce the possibility of the pipeline becoming clogged with grease before reaching the grease trap. Grease waste lines should be piped at a minimum slope of 6mm per 304mm to maintain flow in the drain line. 33 DRAINAGE FAQs What jointing methods are used to connect pipes in the range? Is there a way to repair a specific section of a pipe system without having to replace the whole thing? Marley offers push-fit fittings, which require only lubricant to join, as well as solvent weld fittings, requiring the use of solvent weld cement. Yes, The Marley Repair Socket has been designed to permit additional branch connections or repair to an existing Marley soil pipe installation, without causing major and costly alterations. How wide should I make my trench for underground installations? The width of the trench should be as narrow as possible but at least 300mm greater than the outside diameter of the pipe. At what distance should soil stacks be fixed to the wall? Vertical pipework should be supported with pipe clips at a maximum of 2m centres. Horizontal pipework should be supported at approxi mately 1m centres. How can I control pipe movement as a result of temperature changes in multi-storey installations? This may be established by securing at least one socket with a pipe clip at each floor. Quite often the socket of a pipe length may be located in a solid floor. In this case, wrap the socket and joint with a layer of building paper and backfill with concrete. How can I flash pipework through the roof? With the advent of vent valves, vent stacks no longer need to pass through the roof covering. Generally when the waste pipe or discharge pipe from an appliance is beyond the limitations of an unvented waste pipe. Usually more critical on basin and bidet wastes. The distance between outlets is quite long, what must I do? You can use a Double Sink Combo unit which is made to accommodate unusual distances between outlets. Simply cut the lateral section and extend with standard PVC waste pipe and the extra clips provided. How can I line up the Universal Shower Trap with the tiles? Universal Shower Traps are designed with 360 rotation, allowing for a symmetrical finish that lines up with the tile pattern. How can I achieve different configurations with the Universal Shower Trap? The Universal Shower Trap is a system with 2 independent parts: The combination of the vertical Universal Shower Trap and the new adaptor with horizontal outlet allows you to connect to the main drainage network in all configurations, without using a set of elbows (fewer connections, therefore faster). This system allows you to keep the positioning of the grid parallel to the walls. 34

35 ENDURA GREASE TRAP FAQs How often must the grease trap be cleaned? All grease traps must be cleaned regularly to maintain efficient operation. The frequency of grease and solids removal is dependent upon a variety of factors; the type of food served, the capacity of the grease trap and the quantity of grease in the water. Increasing the frequency of cleaning will reduce odour problems associated with grease traps and improve retention efficiency. Why do I need a Solids Basket for my grease trap? It is highly recommended that a solids basket be used in conjunction with the grease trap, especially when food is discharging into the drain line. A solids basket will help prevent the grease trap from becoming clogged and will help greatly to maintain its effectiveness. How do I empty the Solids Basket? To empty the Solids Basket, lift all the latches on the grease trap cover into the upright position and open the grease trap. There is a strong, pungent odour coming from the grease trap, how do I fix it? Strong odours may mean that solids are accumulating and fermenting in the grease trap. To remedy the problem, install a solids basket inside the grease trap. Alternatively, a cover gasket is damaged and needs replacing. It also may be a sign that you need to increase cleaning frequency. What can I do if there are grease gobules plugging up the grease trap? Either the drainage run is too long or the effluent is cooling before it reaches the trap. In this case, you need to install the grease trap closer to the fixture. 35
