1 New England Carnivorous Plant Society ( December, 2014 Newsletter This month s meeting will be held on Saturday, Decenber 13 at 12:30 PM, at: Roger Williams Park Botanical Center 1000 Elmwood Avenue Providence, RI center/ "The mission of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society shall be to share, to gain knowledge of, and to achieve expertise in all phases of growing, education, appreciation, and conservation of carnivorous plants in both culture and in native habitats. New Members A warm welcome to Timothy Estep! Announcements and Upcoming Events We are happy to announce that Emmi Kurosawa has been elected to serve as our new Vice President. Emmi is always willing to share her knowledge and experience and brings with her a strong passion for carnivorous plants. She works as a biochemist, and last year she gave a talk on digestive enzymes in Nepenthes. She volunteered at our annual show and at our first pre- show event at the Lake Street Garden Center. She will make an excellent addition to the NECPS management team and we look forward to having her as Vice President.

2 December Meeting: Holiday Social and Yankee Swap Saturday, December 12, 12:30 PM, RWPBC This month s gathering will feature our annual holiday party and Yankee Swap! If you want to participate in the swap, please bring a plant- related gift, wrapped and valued at about $10 (or more, if you d like). Some of the hot items over the years were: The first hand- knit NECPS winter caps, which changed hands several times; Cephalotus; Nepenthes singalana and Nepenthes hamata; A propagation heat mat (snagged at the last moment by Priscilla); and Emily s handmade winter Nepenthes cap! Anyone who brings a gift can take part in the wonderful fun of the Yankee swap. This is one of the best events of the year and we encourage everyone to take part. Food will be available, and members are encouraged to bring additional food to add to the party! Recent Events of Note 1. At the November meeting members were presented with not one, but two carnivorous plant presentations. Jeff Matteson gave an informative presentation on caring for and propagating Cephalotus follicularis which was then followed by a helpful presentation on preparing plants for dormancy given by John Lombardi. In addition, and to everyone s surprise, Jeff distributed free rooted Cephalotus cuttings to all who participated! 2. NECPS members Don Gallant and Toni Shannon collaborated to design two classroom aids for describing the trapping mechanisms of Venus Flytraps and Pitcher plants. These are available through the NECPS library, should anyone want to use them for a classroom presentation. Free Cephalotus cuttings at the November meeting!
