2 President s Message Oooh My Goodness! Ken Sicard and I have been in contact with a gentleman from Long Island, Joseph Cantasano, who wanted to donate " some" plants to the NECPS. Joe is changing over and rebuilding his greenhouse and is going to devote more time to Nepenthes, as opposed to the Sarracenia he's been growing. s were exchanged for a few months between Joe, Ken and myself, and finally a date and time was set for me to go to Long Island, NY, and collect the "sizeable donation" of plants. I visited the Island this past Saturday, spent time with my elderly mom and met Joe, and collected the plants. After loading the plants and spending some time with Joe and his wife, I called Ken on the way back to my parents house. Ken answered as usual, with his "Hello John"...and all I could utter was"ooh my God"...which was greeted by a resounding laugh from Ken. To make the story short, I completely filled my van (COMPLETELY) with over 25 garbage bags filled with Sarracenia, VFTs, Sundews and the like. I drove home from long island with my luggage and computer on the passenger seat, because there was no room anywhere else! I just opened and divided 4 bags and have about 30 plants potted, from single crown Sarracenia to 2-3 gallon specimen plants. I'd guess when all is done, we will have OVER 500 plants AT LEAST. So, I say to you all: HELP!!!!!!!!!! I am tentatively scheduling a Pot Party...make that a Potting party, for Wednesday, June 10 at 4 PM, at my house. Beer, Soda Burgers and Hotdogs will be supplied by the NECPS. So will gloves, potting soil, peat and lots of water. me if you can attend (johnatthebeach@cox.net) and I will give you directions. 3 NECPS Program: June 13 th 2009 Touring the UConn Greenhouses & A Local Bog! This month, we will be given a tour of the extensive plant collection at the University of Connecticut greenhouse, presented by Matt Opel, PhD, a botanist and horticulturalist at the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Plant Growth Facilities at UConn. Matt is a noted and published expert on South African flora and maintains an extensive collection of these plants at the greenhouses for both public education and research purposes. He also has a nice collection of carnivorous plants, including a Roridula dentata that won 2 nd place at the 2006 International Carnivorous Plant Society Conference. There are also cacti & succulents, orchids, ferns, and many unusual plants to be seen. Something for everyone! You may visit the greenhouse s website at: After the greenhouse tour, Dr. Opel will give us a tour of a local bog, where Sarracenia, Utricularia, and Drosera are to be found! This is a meeting not to be missed! Other business: There will be NO silent auction, display plants, or food at this meeting. Members should dress appropriately (shoes and pants may get wet!), and bring insect repellant and sunscreen. 4 Secretary s Minutes May 9, 2009 Attendance (Meeting): unknown (I was not present) Meeting Notes: The NECPS now has access to space in the RWP Greenhouse for growing plants. Frank Meglio was placed in charge of caring for the plants. Progress on the new website was discussed. A bog walk at the Great Swamp is planned for the 3 rd weekend of July. Discussions began regarding the Annual Show scheduled for September 2009, specifically, on potential vendors and advertising. We discussed the group order with Michael Szesze. We discussed a possible trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this year, and our June meeting at the UConn Botanical Center. ~Ken Sicard Events of Note Rhode Island Rose Society: Annual Rose Show The Rhode Island Rose Society's 11 th Annual Rose Show, A Century of Roses, will be held on June 13, 2009 and is open to the public from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The show will be held at the Cold Spring Community Center, 30 Beach Street, North Kingston, Rhode Island. There will be hundreds of roses and many exquisite floral designs on display. Come down to the Center, view the roses and arrangements in all of their great splendor, help decide which arrangement is The Best, which rose is The Most Fragrant, and discover the many joys of growing roses in Southern New England. There is no charge for admission, and there is plenty of free parking. The Community Center is located on the waterfront in the picturesque village of Wickford, Rhode Island. There are no active nursery orders. 5 Treasurer s Report The Treasurer s Report will be available at the meeting. Membership dues are due in January for the 2009 year if you haven t paid your dues yet, please do so. Dues are $10 for students, $20 for adults, and $25 for families. Dues may be paid in cash or check made out to NECPS. A copy of the membership renewal form is attached at the end of the newsletter for your convenience. Remember to complete a membership renewal form and submit it along with dues to the Membership Secretary,. 8 NECPS Library Policy The loan period for all items including: books, magazines, and videos are 1 month with one renewal period. No renewals are allowed for books, magazines and videos on reserve. All material will be stored at a secure location deemed by the library committee and confirmed by the Executive board. Failure to bring back books within 2 months will result in loss of borrowing privileges! A valid membership number must be presented by any member wishing to check out any NECPS library materials. Cards are not transferable. You are responsible for any materials checked out in your name. NECPS library patrons may take out one (1) item as they are willing to be responsible for. NECPS library patrons may sign up for one (1) additional book such that at the end of the meeting if no one has already signed up for the item you will be allotted to take that item for the duration until the next meeting. When there is a high demand for a particular item, there will be a limit of one (1) item per person. The only exception to the above rules are for approved functions by the Executive board that are sponsored by the NECPS may reserve any and all material providing a months notice is given to guarantee that material will be available. The NECPS Library reserves the right to determine charges for lost or damaged materials and the right to deny borrowing privileges to anyone who has library materials overdue for more than two (2) months to the NECPS library or owes fines amounting to more than ten dollars ($10.00) from the NECPS. The NECPS library also reserves the right to deny borrowing privileges to any parent or guardian whose child and/or children has the above delinquencies. All material taken from the NECPS library is the responsibility of the NECPS library patrons. For one of a kind items NECPS library has the right to refrain from loaning the material and may keep it as a reference item to be viewed solely at meetings and functions. Please be kind. Rewind the videos before returning them to the NECPS library. Patrons are responsible for damage to videos, so please be careful. Never leave the tape partially rewound as this can cause damage to the tape. Also, videocassettes and equipment are to be used at room temperature as extremes of heat and cold may damage the video or equipment. Also exposure to magnetic fields can cause erasure or distortion. The NECPS library is not responsible for damage to patron's VCR that may result from damaged or defective videos. The copyright proprietor has licensed the picture contained in these videocassettes for private home use only and prohibits other use, copying, reproduction, or performance in public, in whole or in part.
