2 October Meeting Notes The meeting was called to order at 6:40 pm. Minutes of the September meeting were sent in the Newsletter ed to each member. There being no corrections or additions, the minutes were approved. There were approximately 32 members present. Jo Thomas was introduced as a guest. Valerie Wales thanked the hostesses for the evening - Karen Conrad, Melani Nance and Sharon Yates. The Treasurer reported $4, as the balance in the checkbook. OLD BUSINESS: Marlene Hatton reported that the Nominations Committee met and contacted members as prospective officers: Valerie Wales, Co-President plus Judy Aplis or Flora Carnabucci for Co- President; Margaret Weakland for Vice-President; Laura Bianchi for Secretary; and Virginia Schmidt for Treasurer. Election of officers by ballot will be held at the November meeting. Flora Carnabucci reported on the swag meeting November 15th at 6:30 pm at the Twinsburg Community Center. Members should bring gloves, wire cutters and loppers. Naomi Stutzman will provide holly branches again this year. Featured Garden and Twins Day Parade Committees are in need of volunteers. NEW BUSINESS: Rose Skipper was presented with the Lifetime Member Award which was well deserved for her years as chair of the Plant Sale. Sue Davis presented plans for the upcoming Christmas Party on December 13. The cost will be $25.00 per person for dinner. There will be a sign-up sheet at the November meeting. She also asked for volunteers to provide desserts. There will be an optional gift exchange and/or food donation. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Adelle thanked the Beason family for their help in setting up for the meeting. She also displayed the recent BH&G craft magazine which included an article on Kristen Beason and her wonderful artwork. As an update on our food project, Adelle reported 12 pounds of food and $24.00 in donations for the past month. Since we have had several events and meetings at the Stutzman Barn, Adelle thanked Naomi for her generous use of such a beautiful venue. Virginia reminded all members of the GCO Christmas program, on 11/1. Also, the deadline for entries in the GCO photo contest is 11/1. Sue Davis reported that the hydrangea wreaths she and Naomi made will be offered for sale at the Historical Society during the Locust Grove Cemetery tour on 10/12 & 13 and at the Watershed program. Marlene Hatton reminded members of the flower show presented by the Gates Mills Garden Club on 10/12 & 13 from 1:00-5:00pm. Ada Pollock will have a project to make hypertufa pots at her home on Fri., 10/19 at 4:00pm. Door prizes were drawn and the meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm. The program for this evening is 2018 Featured Gardens presented by Kristen Beason. 4 2018 Garden of the Year Award Each year at the October TGC meeting the contenders for the Garden of the Year Award are presented by committee chairperson, Kristen Beason. Those entered this year included Flora and Don Carnabuci, Sue and Rich Davis, Laura Deeb, Elaine and Ray Gonsowski, and Steve and Jennifer Sudnick. Before the winner was announced, Kristen presented a power point with photos of each of the featured gardens. Each of the five contestants shared some interesting facts and stories about their beautiful labors of love. The Sudnicks were thrilled and appreciative that they were selected and would like to thank the club for the honor. They received an engraved stone to place in their garden. Each of the remaining four gardeners received Petitti s gift cards for participating in the Featured Garden program. Our congratulations go out to the Sudnicks as well as to all of the featured garden owners.. Feed Ohio Project At the October meeting we collected 12 pounds of food bringing our total to 124 pounds. Don t forget to bring your food donations to the meeting this month. Items Needed for VFW Ladies Auxiliary Holiday Gift Bags TGC will once again be helping the Twinsburg VFW Ladies Auxiliary fill the gift bags that they will deliver to the Women s Unit at the VA Hospital. If you would like to donate to this cause, here is a list of some possible items you can purchase. 7 Tips for Indoor Seed Starting Are you interested in getting a head start on your vegetable and/or flower garden, experiment with new cultivars or save money? Starting your own seeds indoors is an easy way to do it. It s not only less expensive, it s also a fun, rewarding and great way to get a jump start on your garden season. Here are some tips to help you be successful. 1. Purchase seed-starting mix. These mixes don t contain any actual soil, but they provide ideal conditions for sprouting seeds. Most importantly, they provide a good balance of drainage and water -holding capacity. And because they re sterile, they minimize problems with disease on vulnerable seedlings. Don t use garden soil to start seeds indoors; it generally doesn t drain well and may contain plant disease spores. 2. Make sure your containers have drainage holes. You can use recycled pots - yogurt containers, for example, but be sure to poke holes in the bottom. Plastic six-packs and flats are good choices and can be reused year after year. Biodegradable pots are fine, too. 3. Plant seeds at the proper depth. Check the seed packet for planting depth. You don t need to measure, but if it says 1/4 don t plant the seed an inch deep. The rule of thumb is to plant the seed two to three times as deep as it is wide. Tiny seeds should be barely covered by soil mix, while seeds like beans should be sown about an inch deep. If you sow seeds too deeply they won t have enough stored energy to make it to the surface. Plant extra seeds, because it s likely not all of them will germinate; you ll thin out the extra ones later. 4. Keep seed starting mix moist. Seedling roots need both air and water. Strive to keep the mix moist but not saturated with water - think of it as a damp sponge that contains both water and air. 5. After sowing, set the containers in a warm location. On top of the refrigerator or near a radiator are usually good spots or you can purchase a special heated mat on which to place your containers. Check your pots daily. 6. As soon as seedlings emerge, place pots in a bright location. A sunny window will do but supplemental fluorescent lights will give you the best results. Suspend the lights just an inch or two above the tops of the plants 7. Cool room temperatures is best. You ll get sturdier, stockier seedlings at temperatures in the high 60 s. At higher temperatures seedlings may get leggy. 8. Begin fertilizing weekly. Use a half-strength fertilizer once the seedling has one or two sets of leaves. Organic fertilizers are a good choice since they provide a range of nutrients, including micronutrients. 9. Once seedlings have two sets of leaves, it's time to thin. You want one seedling per pot, so choose the healthiest, strongestlooking seedling and snip off other seedlings at the soil line and discard them. Sources: : 7
