1 The Garden Club of Honolulu Maile Vine Volume XIII, No. 6 Newsletter March 2009 Norenne and MaryJo at the membership meeting President s Letter Hi Garden Club Ladies, What a wonderful visit with our leader-incharge Garden Club of America President, MaryJo Garre. We all had such fun at the prison, parties, and the fabulous meeting at Waialae Country Club. Both the GCH Presidents and Hawaiian Monarchy should feel proud. How ʻbout all those wonderful personal stories concerning Hawaii s royal heritage? (Incidentally, the script is available if anyone would like a copy); since then we are hearing from other members that there are even more untold stories. And can you believe we topped the attendance record with 111 ladies in attendance? Such a great group you are! As to our own GCH presidents we learned what amazing things for which these 10 ladies were responsible. We missed you Helen, Suzanne, Ev, Mary Ann and Moira who were unable to attend. We are most fortunate to have had them step up to the plate, do their thing and keep us going. We praise them, honor them and fully appreciate them. This month, the March meeting will have some important voting items Founders Fund, Projects, slate for next year and who knows what else. And not to forget all the last minute Flower Show questions you forgot to ask months ago. Good Luck! -1- Allison GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MARCH 11 Central Union Church Mauka Parish Hall 9:30 a.m. Business Meeting: Founders Fund Vote Projects Presentation 10:30 a.m. Program: Everything you need to know and do prior to the flower show. 4 Reminders from the Flower Show Chairs Paulette and Tanya Please read your schedule carefully. Many of the questions you may have about the show are answered within its covers. Remember to turn in your entry forms by March 2 to the Entries Chairmen of the Divisions you are exhibiting in: Dotty Nitta for Flower; Claire Johnson for Hort; Cherye Pierce for Photo; Anne Hager for Jewelry. The deadline for submitting your entry forms has been moved forward because of the new entry card system. Your kokua in this matter is greatly appreciated! Your key, intent and/or propagation card is SEPARATE from the entry card. You create these cards on a 4 x 6 unlined white card, and turn them in with your entry when it is passed. This is true for all divisions. Do NOT submit them with your entry forms! Patrons: Mahalo nui for supporting the flower show with a Patron donation! If you are considering a donation, there is still time. You may send your contribution to Joan Blankenfeld, Flower Show Treasurer. 5 GCH Project Proposals 2009 A Gas Generator for the Endangered Species Lab at Lyon Arboretum Nellie Sugiii supervises a lab containing 16,000 rare plants with approximately 150 species including ten plants, technically extinct, which exist only in her lab. The plants are maintained in a controlled, air conditioned environment. Currently there is no back up generator to keep the air conditioning working during an electrical failure. The lab is in great need of a back up gas generator to prevent loss of the plants during an electrical blackout. In 2002 a week long loss of electricity resulted in the loss of 70 percent of the collection. The total cost of a generator including installation is $35,000. The generator will be purchased from Generators Hawaii. $10,000 from grants has already been subscribed towards this project. Nellie will submit a grant proposal to a local Foundation on April 1st for $15,000. The Grant Director of the Foundation assures her that the full amount will be forthcoming. The Lyon Arboretum Board has voted to underwrite any shortfall that might occur for up to the full amount of $15,000. There are two staff members at the Arboretum well equipped to keep the generator in top condition. All equipment purchased by the University is insured. Christopher Dunn, Director of Lyon Arboretum, has assured me GCH will be given a plaque commemorating this support which will be placed in either a well trafficked walkway or in the Visitor Center. The GCH Board and Finance Committee recommends a $10,000 grant to support the purchase of a gas generator for the Endangered Species Lab at Lyon Arboretum. Appropriate recognition will be given to GCH for their contribution. The grant is good for two years from date of approval. Margaret Armstrong The Healing Garden at Straub Clinic and Hospital Straub Clinic and Hospital, a non-profit affiliate of Hawaii Pacific Health, is renovating their Cancer Outpatient Treatment Center and is in the process of transforming an adjacent courtyard into a beautiful Healing Garden. Located between the Palma 1 and Milnor buildings on the Ward Avenue side of the clinic, the garden will provide a lovely therapeutic environment of peace and well-being for patients, visitors and hospital staff. Pictorial plans of the Healing Garden will be distributed at the membership meeting in March. Included in the installation of the Healing Garden will be a water feature, an automatic watering system, professional maintenance, and monitoring by the Hospital Grounds and Maintenance Dept. The total estimated budget for the project is $300, $350, A grant request has been made to GCH for $5, to help fund the planters in the garden. Appropriate recognition and publicity will be given to GCH for their contribution. The GCH Board and Finance Committee recommends a $5, grant to support the construction of the Healing Garden at Straub Clinic and Hospital with appropriate recognition and publicity given to GCH for their contribution. The grant is good for two years from date of approval. Bonnie Andrew and Adelaide Kistner -5-

7 To: From: Re: Members of The Garden Club of Honolulu. Victoria Hill Honolulu Academy of Arts and The Flower Show We all realize what a privilege and honor it is to be using the Honolulu Academy of Arts for our Flower Show. Our history with this organization goes back nearly eight decades. As we go through the busy weeks prior to the opening of the Show, please respect the important list of items below. No one will have direct access to the basement. If for any reason something is needed from the basement, please contact Victoria Hill. Please respect the Academy staff coffee and lunch hours. Coffee is staggered from 9:00AM 10:00AM, Monday-Friday. Lunch breaks typically run between 11:30AM-1:00PM. Please do not expect or ask the Academy staff for any assistance during these times. Drop-offs during the week of the Flower Show must be made only at the times listed in the schedule unless specific times have been assigned to a division. Your division chair will let you know of any specific time changes. No one will be allowed into the building before the appropriate assigned time. Please do not expect to access the premises early. Drop-offs may be made at the Ward Ave. and Victoria St. gates. There will no spaces in those lots in which to park your cars. GCH will provide people to help unload your items. Do not leave you car unattended in the parking lot. Park you car in another location and return for passing. You are responsible for the transportation of all your plants and materials to and from the Academy. The Academy staff will not be involved in any of this process. As I said in one Flower Show meeting, please take a few seconds to smile and say thank you to the Academy staff members. A smile and thank you can make all the difference. This is a large undertaking but we owe it to the Academy, our Chairs, our organization, and ourselves to come away from it with pride. May we have a wonderful time and spread good will. Should you have any questions, please phone or Victoria Hill at or and hillv001@mac.com. Mahalo and aloha, Victoria -7-
