2 The Cholmondeley Family The Cholmondeley family have lived at Cholmondeley in Cheshire since The present Castle was built in the early 19th Century by the 1st Marquess and has been home to three succeeding generations. Lavinia, Dowager Marchioness, wife of the late 6th Marquess, lives here today. Her son, David, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley and his wife Lady Cholmondeley with their sons live at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, built in the 1720 s by Sir Robert Walpole. He now divides his time between Cheshire and Norfolk.

Those who take advantage of the picnic site can walk round the lake and enjoy the splendid view of the Gothic Castle which stands so dramatically on the hill, surrounded by sweeping lawns and magnificent trees - specimen Cedars of Lebanon and great spreading Oaks among Sweet Chestnut, Lime, Beech and Plane. Whatever the season, within the gardens there are always plants and shrubs in flower, from early bulbs through different types of Magnolia, Camellia, Azalea and Rhododendron, a very fine Davidia involucrata in the glade, and varieties of Cornus.

There is also a very pretty rose garden between the tennis court and herbaceous borders.

4 There is also a very pretty rose garden between the tennis court and herbaceous borders. A gravel path from the double herbaceous borders lead via a gatehouse into the delightful Temple Garden. This garden is enclosed by some fine specimen trees and many varieties of shrubs. It changes dramatically with the seasons. The vivid spring colours of Azaleas and Rhododendrons are superseded in summer by the architectural masses of Gunnera, Peltiphyllum Peltatum, Royal Fern, Pampas Grasses and great flotillas of Water Lilies - some of these groups taking on brilliant autumn tones in September and October. The beautiful mosaic by Maggy Howarth, sited at the apex of the three beds containing varieties of grass plants, halfway down the slope at the side of the Castle. Maggy was asked by Lady Cholmondeley to design this memorial mosiac to her late husband, reflecting certain aspects of his life. The paved terrace above the lily pond leads to the private loggia and swimming pool. The Duckery - a derelict nineteenthcentury lakeside pleasure ground - has recently been developed and restored. Articificial rocky cascades have been uncovered and have been brought back to life; rustic bridges have been rebuilt; and on a knoll behind the lake a Gothic ruin has been constructed out of local red sandstone. Much of the overgrowth has been cleared, providing vistas through the Castle gardens and revealing many beautiful, mature trees. A birch-edged perimeter hard path allows access, particularly for the less mobile.

(It is advisable to wear appropriate footwear as walkways can flood in bad weather. School visits can be booked through the Castle Office) Farm Animals A short walk from the very popular Tea Room takes you to the stables and paddocks, where you will see farm animals including African pygmy goats, llamas, alpacas, Shetland ponies and varieties of sheep, pigs and cattle. A children s corner in part of the stables allows close viewing of rabbits, rare poultry breeds and free flying birds. Play Areas Children will enjoy the open spaces, hidden paths and play areas. New for 2014 Woodland Den. Tea Room Whilst wandering through the Gardens you are invited to enjoy light lunches or home made teas, ice creams and snacks in our Tea Room. St Nicholas Family Chapel St. Nicholas s Chapel is situated in the Park accessed either by car or on foot and is well worth a visit to admire its stained glass altar window, ornate panelling and peaceful atmosphere. Farm Shop The Award winning Farm Shop is near the Castle Gardens exit and offers superb locally-produced foods. The Cholmondeley Arms The Cholmondeley Arms is a beautiful country pub adjacent to Cholmondeley Park, serving freshly prepared food all day, every day, locally sourced cask ales on tap and nearly 200 different Gins. The Most Romantic Garden The stunning pebblestone mosaic placed by Lavinia Dowager Marchioness of Cholmondeley as a memorial to her late husband Hugh, the 6th Marquess, created specially by Maggy Howarth,
