1 District V of GCFP Newsletter Fall 2018 Vol. VI The BUZZ District Director Report District Director Report District V Board District V Clubs and Presidents Events to Remember New Events Where did the summer go? The record rain levels and floods in our area washed it away! However, our Monarchs have been plentiful!! Thank you everyone who helped plant Milkweed and other Native plants they love. I want to thank all our members who attended out Annual District V Meeting at the Genettii on September 14 th! The luncheon committee did a fabulous job! I will include some great photos of Chuck Chathum s Tablescape Designs! I want to thank our GCFP Officers and our Club Presidents for the fantastic jobs they are doing! I welcome JoAnne Fogelman as my Assistant Director. We attended the Annual Arts and Landscape Architecture Design luncheon on November 2, 2018 at the Nittany Lion Inn. We were honored to meet and have lunch with the recipient of our District V of GCFP Scholarship student Kyle Turner! The Ballroom was circled with displays of the Artworks and paintings of the PSU Design students works. We received a gift of note cards that have pictures of more artwork that are on display in the Palmer Museum of Art at PSU. JoAnne and I attended the October 8 th & 9 th GCFP Board meeting. We received the 2019 Keystone Kalendars to pass out amongst our clubs. The photos are inspirational! It is nice to know we all have a chance to contribute a view of our garden! We enjoyed visiting with the new District Directors and Assistant Directors of our GCFP. I m looking forward to my term for the coming two years, besides Planting America, I hope to Lead, Learn, Grow too! It is time now for anticipating the Holiday Shows approaching!! I wish everyone to have FUN! Go Wild in your Floral Designing!! Lets wind up this year with a satisfaction that we have taught, mentored or just influenced even just one person about the importance of gardening the GCFP way!!!! It s my pleasure to give a Laurel Award to members of my garden club, Laura and Holly for a great job done!

13 News on the Spotted Lantern Fly Talking Points: Spotted Lanternfly Christmas Tree Risks Penn State Extension Christmas Trees have been a tradition for hundreds of years and bring the beauty and amazing scents of the outdoors into our homes for the holidays Real trees are part of an outdoor ecosystem, thus there is always a chance that insects may be brought indoors with a tree With the spotted lanternfly currently an issue of concern, questions have been raised regarding the possibility of spotted lanternflies being carried into homes Although unlikely spotted lanternfly eggs will be on Christmas trees, if they were to hatch indoors the nymphs pose no threat to humans or animals, and will die quickly Christmas Tree growers follow integrated pest management practices to minimize such threats Gowers also work with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to meet the spotted lanternfly quarantine requirements prior to the sale of Christmas trees If consumers are concerned they are encouraged to inspect the tree prior to purchase. Spotted lanternfly egg masses are visible on the bark if present and can be easily removed Pennsylvania is the fourth largest Christmas tree producing state with annual sales of more than $22 million (NASS 2014) Purchasing real Christmas trees benefits local growers and the local economy They are also an environmentally friendly choice as Christmas trees are a renewable resource and can be easily recycled, unlike artificial trees For those living inside the quarantine zone, we encourage trees to be disposed of by recycling programs where they will be shredded and composted or burned (if allowed by the municipality) and should not transported out of the quarantine zone For the most up to date and comprehensive information on spotted lanternfly and management options go to extension.psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly or all BADFLY. Tri-Refresher GCFP Convention, April 7 9, 2019 Blair County Convention Center, 2 Convention Center Dr, Altoona, PA. Symposium June 5 6, 2019 Atherton Hotel, State College, PA. Continuing education for Flower Show Judges and Consultants. The National Garden Clubs, Inc. offers four schools for the enrichment and educational growth of its members. Upon completion of a school, members must maintain their accreditation. In order to maintain accreditation, consultants are required to attend optional events that enhance knowledge acquired, explore current trends, and promote interest in the school subject. Consultants of Environmental Studies, Gardening Study, and Landscape Design Schools are encouraged to refresh in optional events sponsored within the organization. A multiple refresher may be for two (Bi-Refresher) or three (Tri- Refresher) of these schools where subject matter usually overlaps to a large degree. Flower Show School symposia usually concentrate on flower shows, horticulture and design. Although the courses are intended primarily for garden club members, they are open to the general public, requiring only the payment of a nominal fee. Symposium is an in-depth course of design, horticulture and allied subjects pertaining to flower shows that is more advanced than presented in Flower Show Schools. These courses are primarily intended for Flower Show Judges to maintain their credentials, but all garden club members interested in learning more about flower shows, floral design and horticulture are encouraged to attend. All NGC Accredited Flower Show Judges are required to attend NGC Symposiums in order to remain in Good Standing. Good Standing is necessary if a judge wishes to continue judging and evaluating flower shows. By attending and passing all Point Scoring Examinations, a judge advances from Accredited Judge to Accredited Life Judge and finally Accredited Master Judge. Tip A Tri-Fresher is a refresher for active Consultants for Landscape Design, Gardening Study and Environmental Study. A Symposium is a refresher for Flower Show Judge Judges to maintain in Good Standing, per the requirements found in the 2017 Revised Edition of the HANDBOOK for FLOWER SHOWS.
