Now is the time for wonderful plant sales and garden tours. PLEASE BE DILIGENT WHEN ANSWERING YOUR PHONES, WE ARE BEING TARGETED BY FRAUDS. These are the groups they FALSELY say they represent: IRS, MILITARY, MEDICARE, MEDICAID, GRAND CHILDREN, and there will be others. PLEASE HANG UP YOUR PHONE!!! Also, following up on never ending solicitation is the Home Serve regarding Suez Water customers and their water lines, please call to opt out Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale still needs our help. Thank you for your support, this is a wonderful group who service many people in need. Collection box remains at the office. Tuckertown Fire Department May Breakfast, Sunday, May 21 st from 7:00am 11:30am, we have purchased tickets to show our appreciation of this great group of volunteers and now have free tickets for Village residents, stop by the office. Thank you to our volunteer fire fighters. The Village house keeping continues: We have had our fifth- 30 yd dumpster. Please NO tree or grass debris, this can be composted of off Little Pond Road where we have cleared an area for clean leaves, plants, shrubs and trees of all varieties, no trash of any kind. Dumpster use does not include the disposal of appliances with Freon (refrigerators and air conditioners) and PLEASE DON T OVERFILL. This is a convenience we provide solely to our residents. *Lawn fertilization is now complete by Fuller Lawns. *Tick treatment has been completed at the Clubhouse and Bocce Area and Office, please be diligent this season to avoid Lyme Disease for you and your pets. *Power washing continues with Dwight Kenyon. Women's Club News As men oned in last month s Crier, our mee ng on Thursday, May 11th at 7pm, Michael Lapisky, Master Gardener from URI will be presen ng a program on container gardening, plan ng in small areas and keeping wildlife away from flower and vegetable gardens. Hosted by Carol Dawley & Joyce Noonan HOMEOWNER S ASSOCIATION NEWS The quarterly VWPHOA mee ng was well a ended and par cipa on was lively. Bruce Fromm s Treasurer s report was encouraging. It looks like we have enough money for our insurance policy and adequate funds to run our ac vi es un l membership renewals and fundraising efforts get under way. The reports on the Yard Sale and Arts and Cra s Fair were posi ve with an especially high early registra on for vendors at the Arts and Cra s sale. In prepara on for this year s elec on there are at least two posi ons open and good candidates have stepped forward. Be sure to a end the June 20 th Annual HOA mee ng when the final slate will be set. We will then vote on July 18 th and install those elected into their new posi ons. Finally, I try to acknowledge all the good things done by various members as me goes by but I know that I always miss a few but thank you to all of you for the things you do for the HOA and for each other. We meet on the two Tuesday nights designated on the VWP calendar from 6:30-8:00p.m. at the Clubhouse. This month is the 9th and 23rd. This is a free club with no sign-up sheet, and we bring our own beverages if we want one. There is no specific craft to bring either - just something YOU love to work on! 4 GARDENING CORNER A ques on was recently posed to a URI Master Gardener regarding a mossy type growth that is appearing on the crabapples trees in the Village. Here is her reply. The stuff that is growing on your crabapple trees is a couple of different forms of lichen. (The hairy one is called Old Man s Beard and is related to the Spanish Moss that hangs from the trees in the South. Lichens do no harm to the trees. They are an interesting organism that is a symbiotic partnership between and algae and a fungus. The fungus provides the structure and protection while the algae is the food producer. They sometimes provide homes for insects, some are nitrogen fixers and some are indicators of good air quality. There really isn t anything harmful about having lichens on your trees, just cosmetic reasons. It is quite common to see them growing on blueberry bushes, azaleas and other kinds of trees. No treatment needed. Grace - URI Master Gardener TAKE A HIKE The South Kingstown Land Trust has two guided hikes in May. Visit sklt.org for trail maps and informa on. Saturday, May 6 All Ages Hike & Park Rx Place: Browing Woods Trail Time: 10:00 am Join us for an all ages hike in our largest land holding through pine and oak forest and past amazing stone walls. We will hike about 3 miles, though you can shorten your outing to about 1 mile if desired. Kids and leashed dogs welcome! This monthly hike on first Saturdays is part of a new Park Rx initiative in which healthcare providers in South County are joining a national movement to "prescribe taking walks and spending time in nature for better physical and mental health. The entrance to this trail is 0.25 miles north on Shannock Rd after the intersection with Gravelly Hill Rd. There is a small gravel parking lot on the right hand side of the road and a trail sign. Saturday, May 13 DuVal Trail Hike Place: DuVal Trail Systems Time: 10:00 am Join us for a guided wildflower hike! Enjoy a sweeping view of the ocean and Block Island at DuVal s scenic lookout while walking through 2.4 miles of hill and kettle topography of a terminal moraine left by the retreating glaciers of the last ice age! From Ministerial Road (Route 110) turn right at stop sign onto Post Road (Rt.1A) for 1.28 miles, passing Moonstone Beach Road on your left, to a parking area on the right at the foot of the Quaker Burial Ground. The trail begins about 50 feet west of the parking area on the same side.
