Minutes of SFOS Board Meeting Minutes of SFOS Board Meeting, February March11, 2013 Present: Mary Gerritsen, Steve Beckendorf, Jean Lee, Dennis Westler, Valerie Mountain, Jeff Harris, Ricki Kohn, Allison Lehman, Chris Mende, Florence Inserto, Claire Zvanski Absent: Eric Wells I. Discussion of Proposal for POE Frances Larose and Ken Giebel joined the board meeting to present their proposal for the Pacific Orchid Expositions and discuss the 2013 POE. Net ticket sales for the 2013 POE were $139,225. Per Dennis, attendance was down somewhat on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and normal for Sunday. Over $6000 was raised from the Silent Auction, which will benefit various SFOS targeted activities such as the conservatory of flowers, scholarships, the Helen Crocker Russel Library and conservation. The disposition of the benefit funds will be discussed at a later board meeting once the finances are known. Frances is continuing to build sponsorship for the POE, starting immediately to prepare for next year's show. Ken urged the SFOS to use the Gala night and the SFOS website to raise funds and promote education and publicity for the show. Their proposal was reviewed discussed by the board. Steve made a motion, seconded by Jean, and passed to accept Frances and Ken's proposal for the next 3 years. II. Vice President's Report Steve: The speaker for April will be Daniel Geiger from Santa Barbara, topic: Growing Orchids in Terrariums. The skill session will be on macro photography. The speaker for May will be Daniel Fulop from Venezuela, topic: Biomechanics of Catasetum Pollination. June's speaker will be Ken Cameron from the University of Wisconsin, topic: Vanilla

6 Orchids. Florence and Claire's skill session at the March meeting was for new members, educating them about the SFOS, and was very well received. III. Treasurer's Report Jeff noted that Show Treasurer Dan Peter is still compiling information from the POE, and invoices are still coming in. The board discussed the difficulties in sharing data between Jeff and Dan Peter, currently requiring manual entry due to the age of Dan's computer and the incompatibility of the software. The board discussed, moved and approved a new computer and software for Dan so that the POE finances will be more easily shared with that of the SFOS treasurer. IV. Membership Report Florence and Claire noted that the April meeting is the deadline for 2013 renewals, to keep receiving the newsletter and remain in the roster. They will be sending out reminders to those who have not renewed. Stanford is helping with roster updates. He and Jeff are also helping Claire and Florence coordinate all the new member information and payments. V. New Business Nominations are now open for the two directors, chief financial officer and the president. Two of the directors have served the 5 year limit and by society by-laws, need to step down. Due to a change in his "day" job responsibilities, Jeff has resigned as treasurer effective May, 2013 and a new chief financial officer is needed. All of the current board members are serving as the nomination committee. All SFOS members are encouraged to present their nominations for board positions. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10. 7 Subject: Growing Orchids in a Terrarium Skill Session- Daniel Geiger - Z-Stacking using the Cognysis Stackshot System The skills session should be of particular interest to those growing miniature orchids. Daniel will demonstrate a photographic technique to obtain good images of small, threedimensional flowers. The procedure is called "z-stacking", which increases depth of field beyond what is possible with regular photography. Daniel will demonstrate it with a fairly new motorized, computer controlled focusing rail (Cognysis StackShot). Daniel will need a test plant, so bring your miniatures to the meeting. 8 June - Ken Cameron from the University of Wisconsin - topic -Vanilla Orchids Notices Wear Your Name Badge The board voted to provide a special raffle ticket to members when they pick up and wear their name tags at our meetings. A drawing for a plant from the opportunity table will be limited to this and will immediately follow the choice by the person who did the Skill Session and the winner from the Show and Tell table. So, wearing your name tag will get you an early selection from the opportunity table. Your name tag will be available at the membership table. Member's Corner SFOS Monthly Show and Tell Table We want to thank our members who bring in their plants for display at the monthly meetings. This is a great viewing experience for all and a great way to learn about new plants we might want to try to grow in the future for ourselves. But did you know that you can bring in a blooming plant that you might not be certain about the name or type and have our group of experts help identify your plant? The more you know, the better your chance of success. Thank you for participating and we'll see you and your plants at the next monthly meeting. The Board Is This Your Last Edition of the Newsletter? The SFOS Newsletter is ed to all designated members in good-standing and those whose membership dues are paid in full for the 2013 year. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so now so you may continue to receive the newsletter. Thank you! Requests for Member Comments on The Pacific Orchid Exposition I am looking for comments and constructive criticism regarding this year's Pacific Orchid Exposition. If you volunteered, exhibited plants, or just attended and have things you would like to share, please send them to me via so that they can be considered at upcoming meetings of the Show Committee, the various Committee chairs, and the Board of Directors. Please keep in mind that there are some things pretty much "writ in stone", most notably the food service. I know there has been criticism regarding this, but there are several unavoidable constraints. Unless we choose to raise the price of the Gala considerably, or decide to make less money, there can be no changes made to the food. We have on a few occasions in the past investigated other caterers and found that the prices start at twice what we currently contract for. We are limited to only the list of caterers that Fort Mason allows, and must comply with all regulations regarding food service at a public venue on Federal land. So the food is what it is! But we want to know of your impressions of the running of the show, your interactions

9 with the vendors, the volunteers and each other. If you have comments about the venue itself, there may be things we would like to pass on to Fort Mason's staff. I'd love to hear from you by mid-april! Thanks! This includes everyone from our Presenting Partner the Taiwan Tourism Bureau and Media Sponsors KCBS and CBS, to our weekend volunteers who assured a great experience for attendees. I know that all of you are eager to hear how the show did financially, but as usual there are still invoices yet to be received, some of which could only be estimated prior to the show, so we are all going to have to wait till the May newsletter for that information. Comments that I got from the general public in the course of the weekend was quite positive, and many people told me that the show was one of the nicest they could remember. I felt the same way. There is one important issue I need to address though, and that is theft. There were 4 plants stolen in the course of the show, as well as a pewter tray taken from the caterer

15 (which she had borrowed from a friend)! These four plants were all the same species (Cymbidium goeringii), two from a vendor, and two from a vendor display in the show; possibly during open show hours! The tray was taken after the gala had ended and the caterers already had left. This indicates to me that one and perhaps all these incidents were "inside jobs", done by either a vender or volunteer! One flat of member plants was also mistakenly taken by someone who thought they were being discarded during breakdown. But I found those in the back of someone's car and they were returned. What this all suggests to me is that I need to request that all those who volunteer and exhibit consider themselves deputized as security people while at the show. If you are wearing a badge please feel free to approach anybody behaving inappropriately in a respectful manner. This could be anything from reminding folks that they should not touch the plants or props in the displays, to questioning them if they are seen carrying plants in the show area. If anyone is observed removing either plants or flowers from a display and the show chair is not present, security should be alerted immediately. This kind of theft at our show is very rare, and not only upsetting but a threat to the quality of the show. I have no doubt that the theft of plants was by an aficionado, and not someone from the general public. As a result I found it necessary to remove other plants of that type from the show and hide them away untill breakdown - something I hope never need be done in the future. 17 Photos Courtesy of Jean Lee Youth Prize Awarded at the 2013 Pacific Orchid Exposition Congratulations to This Year's Winner of the Imperiale Youth Prize! Helen Liu, a seventeen year old high school junior from the Bay Area, took home the winning honor at the 2013 Pacific Orchid Exposition. Of all the wonderful entries, her beautifully grown Dendrobium amethystoglossum proved to be best.

18 Helen has been a long-time plant lover and likes to paint flowers. She received her first orchid as a gift when she was in second grade. This plant and the next few didn't survive - but she didn't give up. "It must have been the challenge to grow something that had a reputation for being easily killed that kept me interested in growing orchids," says Helen. "I tried to grow orchids again as a freshman in high school when I bought a Phalaenopsis orchid from my local farmer's market. After blooming that orchid, I've been diagnosed with a serious case of orchid fever." And her fever hasn't broken. As part of a high school project Helen was required to do a project in which she had to interview people in a career that she would like to pursue. She chose"orchid grower" and visited several commercial and retail growers' greenhouses. It was during this project that she obtained her winning Dendrobium. Helen recalls, "I saw the different and beautiful species and hybrids of orchids that existed in the world. That's what I love about orchids -- once you think you've seen them all, they surprise you with something more." Now Helen plans to take her love of orchids to the next level. She is going to "...make my hobby into an academic venture. I am only looking at colleges with great horticulture or plant science programs, hoping to major in something that I love." To read more about Helen's orchid growing adventures, see examples of her paintings, and get helpful horticultural tips, visit Helen's blog at  The Imperiale Youth Prize, which is awarded annually at the Pacific Orchid Exposition, recognizes cultural excellence by those seventeen and younger. The prize also exists to reinforce the enthusiasm of young growers who play an important role in the present and future of orchid growing, conservation, and research.
