1 San Francisco Orchid Newsletter March 2010 Volume 59 Number 3 Society The mission of the SFOS is to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to promote education of its members and the public about orchids. Our goals include: an exchange of information from exhibitions, publications, and the Internet, maintenance of a reference library, and participation in worldwide activities. A California Non Profit 501(c)3 Corporation March Speaker Anna Purificacion-Conde from Purificacion Orchids on Orchid Species of the Philippines SFOS Meeting: Tues., March 2 nd, 2010 AOS Judging: 7:00 p.m. Skills Session: 7:05 p.m. Meeting: 7:30 p.m. San Francisco County Fair Building, Golden Gate Park, 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way, San Francisco. Plants submitted for American Orchid Society Judging must be entered between 6:30pm and 7:00pm. No Skill Session Plant Opportunity Table Purificacion Orchids The speaker on March 2nd will be Anna Purificacion, who will present on Philippine species in nature and in cultivation. The Philippines provide us with some of the most beautiful species in the orchid world, being centers of diversity for Vandas, Phals, Paphs, and Dendrobiums. Many of the species Anna will discuss have played a pivotal role in creating some of the hybrids we usually grow. Wouldn t it be great to grow more species? Purificacion Orchids was established in 1986 by Corazon Purificacion with the objective of providing quality orchids to consumers at affordable prices. The type of orchids grown at first was mainly warm-growing hybrid orchids because it was intended for the market in Metro Manila and other areas in the Philippines with similar climatic conditions. For the international market, the company s goal is to supply quality, farm-grown and propagated Philippine orchid species. To be able to reach this goal, proper growing conditions should be met. So, in 1999, a 3 hectare farm in Alfonso, Cavite was developed.the area was chosen for its ideal conditions and logistics. In 2002, Purificacion Orchids joined its first international orchid show in France. The plants that were brought for selling were received with so much enthusiasm that it was overwhelming. Orchid collectors from all over the world were so happy to know that the much sought-after Philippine Orchid species are now farm grown and are being artificially propagated. Philipinos, unfortunately, have been known to have destroyed much of the orchid habitats in the wild for monetary gain. From France, the company has joined other shows in Europe, Asia and the U.S. Due to its exhibit booths and quality plants for selling at these shows, the Philippine orchids are again being given due recognition for their beauty and diversity. Purificacion Orchids has also started to develop an international wholesale market for its products. An increase of orders from abroad has shown that quality products will always have a high demand anywhere. For more than 20 years, Purificacion Orchids has continuously grown and produced quality plants at affordable prices. Awards of excellence for its orchids and exhibits are now too numerous to mention. Conservation of Philippine orchid species by artificial propagation is one of its major goals, and Purificacion Orchids is still continuing to improve its farms and products to be able to serve its clients more. Anna s presentation will share with us the very best that the Philippines has to offer.

6 POE 2010 Member Plant Sales Note: We will be a new location near the front of the vendor sales area so look for us in that area! Information for SFOS Members Who Want to Sell Plants at POE 2010: Each SFOS member will be permitted to have 100 plants only in the Member Plant Sales area at a time. That means that as your individual plants are sold, you can bring in more. Each night I will make a tally of those plants sold and make that information available to anyone who wants to call me about it. Place a label on each plant and make 2 inventory sheetsone for your records and one to give to the chair/sales staff for record keeping. Labels must be legible and that includes the price. Member codes will be 3 letters followed by 1 to 3 numbers. At the time of check-in, your chosen letter code will be checked to insure that there are no duplicate codes. Before being placed on the sales table, plants must be checked in by a SFOS Member Plant Sales volunteer. The volunteer staff is responsible for removing any plants that are diseased or not established. A good rule of thumb is, if you would like to buy the plant, then it is good to sell to someone else. Plants can be checked in for sale starting Thursday morning February 25 from 10 AM until 6PM. Unless your plants are checked in by a member of the POE Member Plant Sales committee, they will not be sold. Please do not leave your plants without official check-in. The San Francisco Orchid Society will assume a 25% commission for the sale of plants at the table. Each person bringing plants to sell must work at the plant sales table for at least 3 hours-it doesn t have to be all at one time. And remember when you work at the sales area, your purpose is to sell EVERYONE s plants, one s own plants. Anyone who attempts to sell his or her individual plants without going through the show plant sales procedure will be asked to leave the area with their plants. No side deals! Each member who brings in plants is completely responsible for any loss to his or her plants. In other words, we do out best to promote and sell plants and to safeguard them from loss, theft or damage. But it happens. Plants can be removed from the plant sales area on Sunday beginning at 15 minutes before the close of the show. Any exception to this must be cleared with the chair or cochair of the Member Plant Sales area. There will be no saving plants [removing plants from the general sales table] for anyone other than those folks who are working in the plant sales area at the time of their shift. No plants will be sold at the Member Plant Sales area BEFORE 4 PM on Thursday February 25. There will be no exceptions. Sales at that time, before the opening of the show, will be for exact amount cash or check only. Volunteers are needed for all shifts on all days especially Friday all day, Saturday all day, and Sunday AM! It will be first come, first served for volunteers for Preview Night until all shifts are filled. You don t have to be selling your own plants in the Sales area to volunteer here. It is a really neat place to talk about orchids with people and find some of your own treasures. Signup sheets will be available at the February SFOS meeting or contact me at czoltowski@sbcglobal.net or Carol Zoltowski Member Plant Sales Co-Chair POE 2010 Plant Hotel Volunteers Needed Members are urgently needed to volunteer for all shifts to help at the PLANT HOTEL. Without the Plant Hotel being available for our POE customers to 'park' their aready-bought plants so that they can circulate the sales area to make additional purchases, our vendors will not make enough sales to warrant their continued appearance at future POEs, thus seriously financially harming the San Francisco Orchid Society.Without the rent received from the vendors for their selling space, it would be impossible for the SFOS to provide the monthly meetings and programs to which all of us have become accustomed. Over the years, the Society has found it necessary to net $40,000 each year to pay the meeting hall, rent and maintain the high quality of the programs and raffle table plants Dues will only defray about 12% to 15% of that figure. The pace, at times, at the Plant Hotel is frantic but there are lulls when you can leisurely drink some bottled water or a can of soda, stand around and chat with your fellow volunteers and watch the frenzied customers dash from one sales booth to the next to buy more plants to 'park' at the Hotel! The sign-up sheets will be at the front of the meeting hall. Noble C. Emery, Plant Hotel co-chair or n_emery@sbcglobal.net. 6 SFOS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2010
