1 San Francisco Orchid Newsletter April 2009 Volume 58 Number 4 Society The mission of the SFOS is to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to promote education of its members and the public about orchids. Our goals include: an exchange of information from exhibitions, publications, and the Internet, maintenance of a reference library, and participation in worldwide activities. A California Non Profit 501(c)3 Corporation April Speaker Dan Newman/Hanging Gardens on Restrepias - The Easy Pleurothallids SFOS Meeting: Tuesday,April 7 th, 2009 AOS Judging: 7:00 p.m. Skills Session: 7:05 p.m. Meeting: 7:30 p.m. San Francisco County Fair Building, Golden Gate Park, 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way, San Francisco. Plants submitted for American Orchid Society Judging must be entered between 6:30pm and 7:00pm. Skill Session Marni Turkel, Basics of Growing Terrestrial Orchids Plant Opportunity Table Dan Newman Hanging Gardens Restrepia is a genus of about 50 species distributed in the Andes Mountains of South America, with a few species extending northward through the mountains of Central America into southern Mexico. Unlike their flashier and more dramatic cousins, the Masdevallias and Draculas, many of which are notorious for their exacting cultural requirements, most Restrepias adapt to a broad range of growing conditions. Many species will thrive in average home environments or outdoors, bearing several flushes of charming and colorful flowers through the year. Despite these positive attributes, Restrepias are infrequently offered by commercial orchid growers, though they are fairly well represented in private collections in the San Francisco Bay Area and a few other pleurothallid pockets around the U.S. This presentation will seek to illustrate the range of variation within the genus and to discuss some of the questions about its taxonomy at the species level. It will also provide hints for growing and propagating these little treasures of nature, and identify some possible sources of plants. Dan Newman started growing orchids in His first successful subject was a Dendrobium hybrid bought as a tiny seedling at a lei stand in the Honolulu Airport. When that plant finally grew up and bloomed a few years later, he was hooked! By 1996 he had 350 orchids in a one-bedroom apartment. That year he moved his plants into a rented commercial greenhouse in San Francisco. He took over the large species collection of his friend and orchid mentor, Walter Teague, and his hobby evolved into his nursery, Hanging Gardens. Dan started growing orchids full-time in 2000, and moved to a larger greenhouse in Pacifica a few years later. He currently has 10,000 to 12,000 plants, mostly cool to intermediate growers (it s hard to maintain warm conditions in Pacifica!).This number includes a few hybrids, but the great majority are species. Dan joined the San Francisco Orchid Society in March He served as vice president in 1995, and president in 1996/97. He lives in San Francisco with his cat, Angela.

Thank You On behalf of the show committee, I would like to thank all who helped with the setup and teardown of the front entry exhibit. The assembly of the entry exhibit is a total volunteer effort and would not be possible without the support of both our society members and our corporate sponsors. I would especially like to thank Rebecca Masters Long, Yanson Leung, Nellie Chiang, and Walter Shinn for their help with both the entry exhibit as well as the SFOS exhibit. In addition, Eric Imperiale, Claire, Lupe and Mario of the Conservatory of Flowers were a tremendous help with the setup and teardown.
