1 San Francisco Orchid Newsletter March 2009 Volume 58 Number 3 Society The mission of the SFOS is to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to promote education of its members and the public about orchids. Our goals include: an exchange of information from exhibitions, publications, and the Internet, maintenance of a reference library, and participation in worldwide activities. A California Non Profit 501(c)3 Corporation SFOS Meeting: Tuesday, March 3 rd, 2009 AOS Judging: 7:00 p.m. Skills Session: 7:05 p.m. Meeting: 7:30 p.m. San Francisco County Fair Building, Golden Gate Park, 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way, San Francisco. Plants submitted for American Orchid Society Judging must be entered between 6:30pm and 7:00pm. Because of the POE next week, there will be no skill session and no plant opportunity table this month. March Speaker Paul and Mary Storm on The Wonderful World of Schomburgkias and Myrmecophila Paul and Mary were both born in the north where they never saw an orchid probably because it was too cold there in the middle ages. But then, they met, fell in love, and married in Miami where again they never saw an orchid even though they lived near some of the most famous orchid nurseries in the world. However, after they finally settled in Sarasota, Paul attended a plant sale and purchased a division of S. tibicinis and the rest is history! (well, ok, maybe just minor history). From that point on Schoms and Schom hybrids became an obsession to the Storms and they realized that they were born to convert the world to Schombo-love!! Together Paul and Mary (as Meke Aloha Orchids) have traveled extensively seeking the finest examples of Schom species and hybrids, and eventually began making their own hybrids. Their love of people and orchids, and their mission of trying to convert all orchid lovers to Schombo-love have brought them invitations to many societies around the country and introductions to many new life-long friends. In fact, many orchid society members in Hawaii,Arizona, California, North Carolina,Texas,Washington DC, Florida and the Bahamas are now growing Schomburgkias and Schom hybrids with new enthusiasm and affection. Paul s Schombo-hero, Dr. Carl Withner, donated his personal Schom collection to the Storms, and some outstanding nurseries and hybridizers have named Schom hybrids in honor of Paul and Mary because of their Schombomission. Paul is the botanical author of Myrmechea as well as of several future nothogenera, and he is actively involved in hybridizing several genera with Schoms, which have never been combined before. Recent changes in Schomburgkia and Myrmecophila nomenclature have necessitated a major revision of their program.therefore, with the assistance of Julian Shaw, Sr. registrar of the RHS and Dr. German Carnevali, author of the new Myrmecophila genera and the leading world authority on Myrmecophila, their program will reflect the most current information available. Last year the program chair of the Gold Coast (North Miami) society praised this program as one of the best they have ever hosted, and this summer the western North Carolina orchid society program chair summarized their program as a hit and a hoot (but Paul and Mary are still not sure if that is a compliment or not)!? Their forthcoming tour of the California Bay Area societies will be the most extensive program tour ever undertaken by them or the Bay

Following this tour they will be one of the featured presenters in Ohio at the Mid-America winter orchid congress in late March. Paul and Mary are looking forward to presenting their program in the bay area and introducing many new orchid lovers to Schombo-love, and they invite members with Schom species or hybrids which they wish to sell or trade to contact them in advance at: mekealoha@comcast.net. In the meantime, the Storms invite society members to prepare to be swept away by Schombo-love and they promise that members will never look at Schoms, Mcps., and their hybrids in the same way ever again. Refreshments N P SFOS members are encouraged to help out with refreshments, setup and cleanup at Monthly Meetings. If your last name falls within the letter range N P please bring snacks such as fresh fruit, ice cream, crackers & cheese for the next meeting. In Memorium The San Francisco Orchid Society is saddened to report that we lost our friend and longtime member Caryle Wyatt on February 19, 2009 after a long bout with cancer. She was passionate about life, her garden of Orchids and Epiphyllums, her many creative projects and she was always willing to pitch in and lend a helping hand. Caryle was editor of the San Francisco Orchid Society s Newsletter and Membership Chair for 7 years and worked at Plant Sales at our meetings and was Hospitality Chair at the Pacific Orchid Exposition for many years. Caryle will be be sincerely missed. We want to extend our deepest sympathies to her son Malik and her grandchildren. 3 Volunteerss Needed for Security Dear Fan of Orchids, The orchids at the POE 2009 at Ft. Mason need your help! They want to feel secure and we want them to feel secure. Calling all volunteers! We need your help in providing security for the orchid show. Our needs are simple: directing the public at the front entrance, securing the path between the displays and the retail sales area, and checking purchases at the exits. We have volunteer opportunities for all hours of the show each day: Friday, March 6, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m Saturday, March 7th, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. We also need volunteers for the Gala Opening Night on Thursday night, March 5th, from 6:15 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Your security volunteer badge allows you into the show when not volunteering. (Except for Thursday night - you must volunteer Thursday night to attend the gala without purchasing a ticket.) The typical shift is three hours with breaks.we have both standing and sitting shifts. No detailed orchid knowledge needed, just your presence and your smile. An overlooked resource for volunteers are your friends, family members, and coworkers.they get to see one of the country s best orchid shows in exchange for a few hours of their time.and you might just recruit another orchid addict! A big thanks to those who have already checked in with me to confirm your shift. For those who might be planning on working Security but have not signed up, please don t delay! Last minute offers of help are always appreciated but knowing you are going to be helping before the show starts really helps! So make an orchid feel loved and secure volunteer by contacting me now. 4 Still Time to be Part of POE 2009 When you read this, there is still time for you to volunteer for POE 2009, and support your orchid Society in providing you exciting speakers and fabulous plant tables, as well as supporting the philanthropic work that makes our group one of the most respected in the country. I know that Plant Hotel, a favorite committee, has filled its schedule thanks to enthusiastic response by our membership. But Security, equally important to the running of the show, still needs some help, as do several of the other committees. If you have thus far just volunteered for Preview night, please look at your schedule and if possible give some additional time for the days of the show that need your help the most. I also hope as many of you as possible will be entering plants in competition. Especially for those of you who have not shown competitively before, the thrill of winning your first ribbons or trophies is incomparable. And the educational value of the general public seeing what can be grown without a greenhouse or outdoors in the Bay Area cannot be stressed enough. Many of our members have had their interest in Orchids kindled by attending our show, so by showing your plants you actually help our society grow. I look forward to seeing all of you in the course of the weekend.volunteer if you can, and be sure to encourage all your friends to attend! Thanks! Dennis Westler CHANGES in POE 2009 PLANT REGISTRATION As you prepare your beautiful plants for entry into the Pacific Orchid Expo next month, be sure to note the following changes: There are 3 types of Exhibitors (not 4) this year. They are: a. NOVICE they have won no more than six (6) trophies/awards (other than ribbons) at any AOS-sanctioned show. b. ADVANCED they have won more than six (6) trophies/awards (other than ribbons) at any AOS-sanctioned show. c. COMMERCIAL same rules as previous years see show schedule The INTERMEDIATE classification was dropped because so few plants have been entered in this group in the past 3 years. Registration for BOTH AOS and ribbon/trophy entries closes at 9:30 am on Thursday. No longer open for ribbon entry until 11 am, to allow for better organization and an on-time start for judging at 1pm. We re looking forward with excitement to seeing your plants on display at the Show!! Calling all Ribbon Judge Volunteers for POE We are looking for members to participate in ribbon and trophy judging at the Pacific Orchid Exposition this year. Judging takes place on Thursday, March 5; volunteers need to be available from around 1 pm through 5 pm. Familiarity with orchid genera, the categories for judging at POE, and a cooperative, friendly outlook are very helpful.to learn more, or to volunteer, contact Cindy Hill, (510) SFOS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2009

5 POE Tickets Missing After the February meeting, it was noticed by the Larose Group that 41 general admission tickets were unaccounted for. It is assumed that either they were inadvertently dropped, or mistakenly picked up by someone. Generally tickets sold to members for resale or distribution are all accounted for by ticket number as a way for us to accurately track attendance from year to year. The ticket numbers in question are General Admission, # #0119. If they are not accounted for by the date of the show, we will have no choice but to not honor them. Please check the ticket numbers you purchased at the February meeting, and if you are holding these numbers contact the Larose Group at We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause! POE FRONT ENTRANCE DISPLAY We are looking for volunteers to help install the Pacific Orchid Exposition front entrance exhibit on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3-4. All are welcome and no experience is needed. Whatever time you are able to contribute will be a big help. The volunteeers last year helped create a beautiful exhibit and we look forward to doing the same this year. For more information, please contact Tom Perlite at or tperlite@sbcglobal.net SFOS Board Election Election of officers for the SFOS Board of Directors will be held at the May 2009 meeting. The Nominating Committee is presenting a slate and nominations will also be accepted from the membership. The Nominating Committee, Chair Kay Klumb and Judy Bley, present the following slate: President: Jean Lee Past President: vacant Vice President: Eric Hunt Treasurer: Dan Peter Secretary: Kay Klumb Directors: Maureen Clarke Ellen Edelson Ricki Kohn Allison Lehman Free Lakeshore Neighborhood Plant Exchange Oakland, CA, March 21, 2009 Go green with us this Spring. Come to our free neighborhood plant exchange on Saturday, March 21, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at 3811 Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland. Parking is easy and this is a free event. Recycle, trade, and save. Have plants you must prune or divide? Bring your excess to our plant exchange and take home new plants for your yard just in time for spring planting. All types of plants are welcome: from cuttings up to full size. Create an instant new garden on a shoestring budget. Garden accessories and accents are also welcomeóumbrellas, clippers, books on gardening, pots, stepping stones, and even goldfish. Last year, more than 300 people participated and more than 1,500 plants, large and small, found new homes. It was a great way to meet new neighbors and foster community spirit. Grand Lake Ace Garden Center donated plants and Comcast Cable came out to film the event. Volunteers helped make the experience smooth and easy. Here s what people said: I got to take home so much more than I expected. What a large selection and so well organized. What fun, everyone was so friendly! This Spring, we anticipate an even higher attendance and more plants changing hands. Want to donate plants before the event? No problem. Interested in volunteering in the afternoon? We happily accept. Tell your friends and neighbors, the more the better.
