1 May/June 2018 Volume 30 Issue 5 President s Theme Sharing Our Passion for Gardening and the Environment President s message: Green Thumb Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, Inc. Est Dear Members, Reflections on the Year Past It is with pride we can all look back to Garden Club Year So many accomplishments and progress were made in so many areas. Once again, we are sending 41 children to Camp Wekiva. As we all know, these are well deserved children who went through a year of instruction, tutoring, guidance and volunteering. We are mentoring and educating future stewards of our environment. The Secret Garden Tour and our Standard Flower Show, which require the support and hard work of all members, were big successes. They are showcases of what FLGC does, and what we are willing and able to accomplish. Our Garden and Shade House are places to meet, work and share our love for Gardening and the Environment. Our newsletters, s, classes, meetings, social media and celebrations are just some of our means to care and share. I hope I did not leave too many events out of this list. I do know, that we can measure many of our accomplishments with the appropriate metrics. Congratulations! At the End-of-the-Year Luncheon, The FLGC Presented the Following 2017/18 Awards: Bayberry Circle won the Membership Award for having the greatest percentage increase in membership during the year. Bayberry was awarded a $25 check for this achievement. Cordia Circle won the Attendance Award for having the highest membership attendance at the general meetings and programs of FLGC. Parkinsonia and Moringa Circles won the Exhibiting Award for highest participation of members entering the Flower Show. Parkinsonia Circle won the Blue Ribbon Award for the greatest number of blue ribbons awarded in the Flower Show. What we cannot measure so easily is the impact we leave on the world, the positive learning everyone is providing, the wonderful friendship we are making. And we are having fun doing it. Come and join us for any of the working days and events at our Headquarters. Remember to follow, like and share us on Facebook. I hope you enjoy the months of rest, and I ll see at the next event. It takes many hands to produce a fantastic flower show, and we have the best hands around. I guess when we do a show every year, we have the old timers who mentor the newbies and it all works!! It is lots of fun, and we're so proud of our beautiful horticulture and designs - keep up the good work. Sincerely, Becky Schuberth, Flower Show Chairman Note: See a list of all Flower Show winners on Page 3 Important Meeting! This year s culmination of our Youth Gardening Program began with our Youth Flower Show, Celebration, which started on March 9, 2018 at the FLGC General meeting with the presentation of the entries of the Little Schoolhouse students and BFF Intermediate members, under the direction of youth leaders Jackie Schoettle and Melissa Weekley, respectively. On Wednesday March 21, 2018 In-school Youth Flower Shows were held simultaneously in three elementary schools, Harbordale, Floranada and Virginia Shuman Young, judged by our District XI judges and others from District X. The In- School shows excited the student population in the schools as well as the staff and parents. Thanks to Becky Schuberth who coordinated the judging that day with the shows. We had 169 students enter the shows with 839 entries. Points were accumulated from all entries in the show and camperships plus transportation have been awarded to 41 students. Special thanks go to Jackie Schoettle for being the Registrar for the camping session again this year. She also rides the bus to the camp, volunteers for the week and returns with our campers at the end of the week. Thanks so much for your continued support and work with our youth Jackie! The John Schandelmayer Award for $25. for the best plant grown from supplies provided by the garden club, the Elsie Allison Award (a book award) for the best poster, journal or notebook were awarded in each school as well as an NGC Youth Award which is an automatic campership award. Our BFF Intermediate Students (grades 6 to High School) entered the National Garden Club High School Essay, Youth Poetry and Youth Sculpture Contests and the listing of their awards appears in this Green Thumb. We await the results from the National Garden Club at the end of May. We are very proud of all of our youth gardeners and we appreciate all the help and contributions of our members to our youth program. Thanks so much! Sandy Lynch and Becky Schuberth, FLGC Youth Chairmen

4 Page 4 The War on Invasives By Agnes Gallo At the March general meeting I had the privilege to speak to the audience about the vision of transforming the Garden Club grounds into a beautiful botanical garden and I explained that the first step in this daunting endeavor was to eliminate all invasive plants. I concentrated my efforts on the obvious culprits: Syngonium podophyllum (arrowhead vine) that is choking our trees, and Sansevieria hyacinthoides (mother-in-law plant) that is taking over large areas in such a way that nothing else can grow. I soon found out that I wasn t alone to declare war on invasives. At Hugh Taylor Birch State Park there are currently two young women from the Army Corps of Engineer civil works program whose job it is to remove invasives. Becky and her workmate helped me identify more invasive plants and gave me tips on how to remove them. They also started working around the Garden Center and pledged to help me next time they could gather some volunteers. Last week, a small army of park rangers and Aquatic Vegetation Control workers, chainsaw and machete in hand, went through our grounds, cutting and ripping, digging out roots, and ultimately filling up dozens of garbage bags. It was a merciless invasive massacre! I understand that some of our favorite plants now belong to the extensive invasive plant list and that we are reluctant to part with them. Some even have beneficial properties like removing VOCs from the air. Sansevieria is the perfect example. But only Sansevieria hyacinthoides is a problem in Florida natural areas, so you have 69 more species to choose from! I would encourage all of you to visit the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council FLEPPC.org to learn more about the devastating effects of non-native invasive plants on our ecosystem and what we can do to prevent it. Click on this link to view the complete list and some useful information. SUBMITTEDTOALTA.pdf There is still a lot of work to do on our grounds, but I am confident that with your help, we can win the war on invasives! The importation and spread of invasive vegetation can be significantly reduced by public education. It is the responsibility of those who are aware of the problems caused by invasive nonnative plants to educate others about their identity, impact, and control so that further ecological degradation of native ecosystems can be reduced. UF/IFAS Extension Service Editor s Note: It is especially important that invasive plants are not introduced into or planted in Birch State Park, so what we do around the Garden Center is especially important to the health of the park. Check the link above before planting anything in our garden! Yearbook Updates! Circle Presidents! Please remember to submit all Yearbook information to Gene Cain and Tamara Pope for the updating of the Yearbook.
