1 Richland County Master Gardener Newsletter Volume XIV July 2014 President s Message Mona Kneuss Mother Nature s Lessons 101 Summer is in full swing now. Boy are we learning a lot about Mother Nature and how she can change things. This growing season started out two weeks behind. Then came rain, then cold, then hot, then rain, then cold, well you get it. So what that has done has made us all learn how to adapt to the weather to grow our plants. This year I love not having to water. We as gardeners must love what we do to always accept challenges that come with growing plants. I would like to ask if we can all bring our fondest memory of gardening to our next meeting to share with everyone. I hope to see you on 8/11/14, 6 pm, at Kingwood Center. It will be our POT LUCK. Please park on Linden Road. I ll open the gate at 5:45 and will lock it at 6:10. If you are going to be late put my # in your phone so I can let you in: Thanks, Mona

Fairy Gardens/ Miniature Gardens Mona Kneuss, our MG president, wowed us with her creation and explanation of what and how to create a Fairy Garden or as she likes to also call them, a Miniature Garden. Mona described how the garden can be seasonal, annual, or a permanent garden. Almost anything goes when creating a small garden. A broken clay pot, old discarded car, wooden box etc... She described that Miniature Gardens are multi-layered gardens, using thrillers, fillers, and spillers, all of which can be flowers, foliage, or structural items like small trellises. Mona stressed that it is important to make it your own move items around in your mini garden, and think outside of the box for containers. You can purchase small items for your Fairy Garden / Miniature Gardens at Kingwood Center, craft stores that sell doll furniture etc. Mona also stated that there is no set scale for a Fairy or Miniature Garden, be creative and use items found around your house, think re-purpose! We all enjoyed watching as Mona imagined and created a Miniature Garden right before our eyes.
6 Given that it was Jean Taddie s birthday, Mona gave Jean the miniature garden as we all sang Happy Birthday! Respectfully submitted, Suzanne Mayer Happy Birthday to: Judy Huffman August 5 Suzanne Mayer August 8 Rebecca Meadows August 11 Sharon Reese August 21 Vickie Lambright August 26 Amanda Stanfield August 29 Betty Keppler September 1 Amy Crutchfield September 19
7 Volunteer Opportunities As we discussed at June s meeting, here are volunteer work dates for this summer. Fairgrounds beds in front of administration building: Every 3 rd Wednesday in August and 6p. Janet Bixler. Malabar Farm: Every 2 nd Wednesday of August and Jim Huffman. Richland County Fair Master Gardener Volunteer Schedule Volunteers needed to staff our display at the Nature Center building from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday thru Saturday at the Richland County Fairgrounds. There will be literature to pass out. The main feature will be a water garden constructed by Janet Bixler, Missy Malone, and Pat Storms, along with some miniature gardens for display. For those who do not know, there is a nature park taken care of by the Master Gardeners and the Men s Garden Club. The building you will be in is connected to the band shelter. Mona s brother spray painted the nature barn and it looks 100% better. Bill Flannegan and his wife have worked all summer changing the landscaping on the Master Gardener s side. Bill is in the process of placing stone from the Rock Road Bridge in the beds. Pass the word around. Remember, fair admission is free every day you help. You can double up with your spouse. Your name will be on a list at the back gate beside the big red barn. Please consider helping us and make this the best year ever. To sign up call or Janet: , jkbixby@yahoo.com. 8 Notes from the Editor Sharon Reese This and That I look forward to our potluck meeting on August 11 th. I hope we re all able to bring something from our garden that would be outstanding. If we all bring one or two place settings: plates, drinking cup, and tableware, one for our self and one for someone who might forget or not see this, we ll save some money and lessen our impact on the environment like good caretakers of the earth. See you at the meeting, Monday, August 11, 2014, at 6 pm at Kingwood Center Exhibition Hall. Park on Linden Road, the Linden Road Gate will be open from 5:45 to 6:10.
