6 A Partial History of the James M. Holloway Estate at Clayton Road Own a part of Missouri history with the impeccably restored and renovated James M. Holloway estate home, a spacious pre-turn of century (~1872) historic Colonial farm home. Formerly one of seven Holloway brother farms (180 acres) that began at Holloway Road extending westward, this is the last family home standing. The Barn at Lucerne, now part of St. Louis Community College at Clayton/Kehrsmill, is the final remnant of the adjacent dairy farm. A great, great nephew of James M. Holloway confirmed the age of the home although county tax records only began in His great, great grandfather owned what are now Claymont Estates subdivision and another great, great uncle owned the dairy farm next door. Claymont subdivision was built on part of the farm. When the current owners purchased the property, the 900 sq. ft. Caretaker s cottage and original barn resided on the east side acre. Only eight families have lived here with the past three spanning 65 years. Built from pine and cypress, the wall studs were cut from single trees and run from basement footings to the attic. The original 1x10 inch thick cypress siding is still intact under the vinyl siding which keeps the interior temperature constant. A major portion of the original cedar shake roof was found beneath two layers of the old asphalt roof. Now the house sports a 100-year steel shake roof with transferrable warranty. Boasting 9 ft. ceilings throughout, the spacious rooms contain original plaster walls/ceilings, hardwood floors (original heart pine kitchen and upper level) and crown/base moldings. Beautifully restored millwork throughout includes original staircase, original pickled chocolate cypress in the library and lime washed cypress breakfast room, butterfly window trim, and original front, back and interior four-panel doors. The door leading to the family room is the original back door and has not been disturbed. The living room fireplace (now gas) was formerly used for cooking. The kitchen was brought inside in the 1930 s and was recently upgraded by the owners to the current gourmet kitchen with Energy Star Dacor Epicure SS appliances, full double electric/convection ovens, 5-burner gas cook top, granite counters with travertine backsplash/nickel inlay, hand finished Venetian Plaster walls by St. Louis artist Margaret Von Kaenel and tinned ceiling. The maple butcher block, which does not stay with the house, dates to the early 1900 s and was left for each owner due to its weight. The Plantation shutters and cork floor in the library are new additions. Dr. Hemminway, a local veterinarian in the 1950 s, used the library as his office and had his smithy in a shop where the Hosta gardens now reside. The library was the former maid s quarters with an exterior door for back access to the kitchen. Mrs. Hemminway owned an antique store and tea room (The Red Apple)
7 located in the breakfast room and lower level suite. The painted design on the built-in china cabinet marks the quarter yards for measuring cloth. Mrs. Hemminway provided the pictures of the home during the time she owned it. During the historic home tour in 1999, she recounted how her boys jumped from the bedroom steps onto the bannister to slide down for breakfast. The red oak floors were installed over the original heart pine by the Hemminways shortly before they sold the house to the previous owners who immediately covered them with wall-to-wall carpet. The Hostetters refinished the floors to include urethane coating for preservation and durability. The master bath began as a converted porch that was enclosed to make a tiny bath and closet area. The current owners upgraded this area to a master bath that includes marble floors/counters, hand painted sinks, Flemish marble and alabaster lights, custom maple cabinetry by Callier & Thompson, steam shower, and huge walk-in closet built over the breakfast room. The master bedroom contained a built out 54 closet that was removed when the master bath area was completed. The Victorian second bath upgrade in 2014 contains a Victoria+Albert lava ash claw foot tub, brushed nickel hardware, marble floors, granite countertop, and cypress bead board wainscot. The lower level Mother-in-law suite with full bath and private entrance has the tub that was installed in the 1940 s when the well was connected to the house. The owners added the oversized detached, insulated three-car garage where the third bay area is used for garden equipment storage. The design makes conversion for additional parking easy. The garage is also deep enough (26 ) to parallel park a vehicle and still have room to park two cars. When the Hostetters purchased the home in 1992, the only plantings included Yews, rug junipers and cedar hedge in back. To create the tranquil surroundings, they planted all the trees (except the Sweet Gums and Austrian pine on the west side of the home), and all the gardens. The gardens boast perennial wild flowers such as Bee Balm and wild geraniums, Columbines, Indigo, Hostas, Virginia bluebells, flowering shrubs, and roses designed to attract hummingbirds and butterflies, 100+ yr. old Alabama Shasta daisies from stock belonging to Mrs. Hostetter s maternal grandmother, and lovely trees for shade and bird watching, plus four raised beds for vegetables behind the garage. There are two wells on the property, the spring fed/cistern well by the back porch that first provided drinking water to the house, and the 300+ deep aquifer well with the green cap that is the second deepest well in the county. The deep well could be used for lawn irrigation.
