2 Interactive Lighting Controls
Interactive Lighting Controls 3 for the complete lighting solution the world s leading lighting control specialist Today s market The market demands higher levels of flexibility, mobility and quality. Projects are becoming more complex to develop. Development, design and construction continue to integrate. As a specialist in all areas of lighting, Philips Lighting is the natural partner for the complete lighting solution. Having always been at the forefront of the lighting controls industry we place great emphasis on innovation in technology, quality and reliability. Since it was established, Philips Lighting has been working together with the lamps, gear and luminaires groups, to develop new and better means of controlling light sources by switching and dimming.today, we have a wide range of products designed to meet the lighting management needs of the smallest to the largest projects. The acquisition of ECS Lighting Controls by Philips Lighting in October 1999 brought together two of Europe s leading lighting and controls specialists, to form The Lighting Solutions Group as a single company with unrivalled experience. Philips global research and development resources coupled with the specialist lighting control skills of ECS create a natural synergy.the combined product range is the most comprehensive available and, being backed by a wealth of expertise worldwide, ensures that the highest standards of customer service and assistance are maintained.
4 Interactive Lighting Controls lighting save control for energy saving on running costs The energy consumed by lighting is a significant part of the energy bill. Energy can easily be wasted when lighting is inefficient. Correctly applied control techniques can reduce energy costs by at least 30% compared to conventionally switched lighting. Lighting controls will save on your running costs by ensuring that light is always adequate for efficient work performance, but never excessive.there are several ways that lighting controls can achieve this, and these techniques may be used individually or in combination. Refer to the graph below to see how much energy can be saved using some standard lighting control functions Key Infrared control Presence detection Daylight linking Time scheduling Energy saving in percent Applying lighting controls will save up to 75% on your running costs Lighting controls applied
Interactive Lighting Controls 5 Presence detection One of the simplest ways to control lighting within a given area is by a movement detector, (also known as a presence, occupancy or PIR sensor).the sensor responds to the movement of body heat within a specified zone, switching the lights on or off. A time delay is built in to avoid unwanted switching if a person is still for a period of time within the space or zone.this delay time can easily be configured and adjusted on the system. Daylight linking To take advantage of the free natural daylight that pours in through the windows in many indoor spaces, a light sensor is mounted on the ceiling to measure the amount of natural light coming in.the system automatically dims the luminaires within the area, so that a constant level of light is maintained in the working space.the luminaires can be programmed to switch off as daylight takes over altogether. Exterior lights are switched on and off in response to daylight levels. Maintained illuminance A light sensor connected to a control system is an ideal solution to maintain the correct lighting level for the space (the design illuminance) over the entire life of the lamp. When the lamps are new and have a higher output, they are dimmed to achieve the desired level, saving on energy costs. As the lamps deteriorate with age they are gradually brought up to full brightness. Time scheduling Time control can be used to switch lights on and off automatically at predetermined times, so that the lights are only on when needed.the schedule can be constructed to cater for specific days of the week, weekend, and seasonal or holiday patterns can be incorporated. Hours run logging In order to control maintenance and running costs, it is possible to measure each output of a control system, giving you exact information about how long your lamps have been burning.this has two major benefits, in calculation of energy costs per area or tenant, and also enabling efficient scheduling for lamp replacement.
6 Interactive Lighting Controls adaptable lighting management for a fast changing world flexibility A major advantage of installing a lighting control system in a building is that it allows for flexibility in the utilisation of the space. Often as business needs change, so does the use of a space, requiring an alteration in layout.the lighting must be able to evolve with an expanding business or be easily adapted to suit new tenants. Modern control techniques such as infrared hand held remotes, wall mounted transmitters, and even PC or telephone interfacing, eliminate the need for vertical wiring in partitions, making rearranging a space simple, saving time and money. Lighting controls also make it easy to adjust the overall lighting, for example a room that was originally intended as a drawing office requiring a high light level can easily be adapted by dimming the light sources, so it can be used as more of a general office space.
Interactive Lighting Controls 7 Lightmanager software offers real time control.this screen shows what lights are on (the yellow squares) and which lights are off (the blue squares). By clicking on the representation of the lights the lights can be controlled. Grouping of lighting circuits As part of a lighting management system, luminaires are normally grouped into circuits that are wired back to an output on the control module.the output then switches (and dims) the luminaires on that circuit.the number of luminaires per circuit can be chosen depending on the designer s wishes for flexibility.the maximum flexibility is one luminaire per circuit or output and in this case changing the lighting to suit a new layout is very simple and does not require expensive wiring changes later on. Corridor Linking This is typically used for corridors and exit routes to ensure that they are always lit whilst the office lights are on. When the last person leaves, their lights are switched off but the corridor and exit route lights will remain lit until a further adjustable time has elapsed. Emergency lighting testing, monitoring and logging Lighting management systems can also help manage statutory testing and monitoring of emergency lighting, with the advantage that only the Permanent and Switch live feeds to the specific emergency luminaires are tested. Standard luminaires will continue to operate as normal. Even the battery, inverter and lamp can be checked.the testing can be performed automatically, day or night, per luminaire at a switch or centralised via the PC software. Link to other building control systems It is possible to link your lighting controls system to other building management systems, from simple "volt-free" contact, through to full open system integration.this allows information, and indeed control, to be passed from one system to another. Lighting can now be controlled as a function of services such as fire, security, access, generator or HVAC. For example, you may want the lights to switch on to maximum whenever the fire or security system is triggered. Additionally, it is possible to use the lighting controls movement detector to trigger the air conditioning system to switch on or off.
8 Interactive Lighting Controls set your own lighting comfort at the touch of a button People think and work better in a comfortable environment, thereby increasing productivity.today s indoor spaces need to be flexible, not just in the long term, but immediately. Individual users have individual lighting needs. It is therefore important that the lighting can be adapted to suit the users preferences.the Lighting Solutions Group offers individual luminaire control.where maximum flexibility is required, individual luminaire control will ensure that every possible configuration can be achieved. Infrared remote This is especially suited to offices and meeting rooms where the lighting requirements are likely to change several times during the course of a day due to the changing moods or tasks of users. Even control over non-lighting functions such as temperature can be accommodated.
Interactive Lighting Controls 9 Manual control The systems can be manually controlled by using switches and dimmers that are wired into the lighting control module. Most systems make it possible to easily change the relationship between these switches and the lights they operate, allowing flexibility into the system. Infrared control As an alternative to wired switches it is possible to use wireless infrared control. This is especially suited to offices and meeting rooms where the lighting requirements are likely to change several times during the course of a day due to the changing tasks of users. A ceiling mounted receiver and hand held or wall mounted remote transmitter operate the dimming and switching of groups of luminaires.these systems offer the flexibility to set the lighting and revise it at any time. Scene setting As an extension of infrared remote controls, lighting controls from Philips offer a system to pre-programme favourite "scenes". After saving your settings, it is a simple matter of pressing the right button and the control system will reset all luminaires to the appropriate settings to create the scene.this application is an excellent feature for conference rooms where settings for screen projection, general discussion and presentations can be built in, including the control of the audio visual equipment. Telephone keypad control via PABX With a lighting management system it is even possible to interface with the building s PABX system, typically via the call logging port. Each individual user can then dial a predefined code on the telephone keypad to set his/her lighting to a choice of pre-set scenes. PC control via IT network interface For the ultimate in lighting management, the control system may be interfaced to the building s IT Local Area Network (LAN).This allows each individual PC user to set their lighting scene, dim the lights up or down or switch the lights on or off. Scene setting Controls systems that offer the facility to pre-program favourite "scenes".
10 Interactive Lighting Controls set your own lighting comfort the right choice of system Deciding which lighting control system is best for you will depend largely on the application and user requirements.the features and benefits discussed on previous pages are for system differentiation and the drivers for developing the solutions detailed below.
