1 WATER RESOURCES NEWS Friday Fast Facts Sewer Cleanouts Do You Have One? VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 Do you have a sewer cleanout in your front yard? Most people don t know if they have a cleanout because they don t know what it is. A sewer cleanout is an access point into your sewer line or lateral. This line goes from your home or business and connects into the city s sewer main. A cleanout provides easy access to your sewer line for inspection or clearing blockages. The only part of the cleanout that is usually visible above ground is the cap. Caps can be flat, but frequently they have a raised square or x on the top so the cap can be grasped and twisted off. If you have had a serious clog in your plumbing that affected several fixtures in different rooms, the plumber probably looked for your cleanout to snake your line. Snakes are augers and are made of coiled metal wire with a gap between each coil at the end, and include a crank or motor to rotate the helix as it travels down the pipe. There are different types of snakes for different types of clogs. Using the wrong kind of snake or using a snake incorrectly can damage pipes, especially in older homes. Plumbers also use cleanouts to camera a line to determine what is causing a clog. Newer homes and businesses are required to have a sewer cleanout installed on the property, as well as an inspection tee/clean out in the right of way. However, if you live in an older home or have an older commercial building, you may not have a sewer cleanout. The best place to start looking for a cleanout is near the structure by a bathroom or kitchen. Cleanouts on older properties that have been installed as a result of a plumbing repair are often located near the edge of the property abutting the right-of-way. If you do not have a cleanout, you may want to have one installed so that sewage clogs and issues can be more easily resolved. If you do have a cleanout, make sure the cap is accessible and always secure. Damaging the cap with a lawn mower or forgetting to replace a cap can cause debris to enter your sewage line and cause clogs. Open cleanouts also allow rain to enter the wastewater system and can add to sewage overflows. Without a cap, a cleanout can become a hazard to children and small pets. Water Resources Field Operations Division is responsible for sewerage issues in the city s wastewater distribution system. A dedicated crew performs work that most of us could not abide. The four-person crew is responsible for sewer inspections (CCTV) work, backup investigations, gravity main repair, and a host of other sewer-related responsibilities.

2 ADOPT A TRAIL Water Resources Department scoured our Adopt-A-Trail leg Thursday morning in preparation for the ribbon cutting festivities for the Converging Trails Dedication. Thank you to DPW for lending us the litter grabbers and providing trail-side bag pickup service. February 12 th Field Ops worked a water main break due to a vehicle accident that took out our fire hydrant at the intersection of Fox Lake and 405.

4 POLICE DEPARTMENT Congratulations to Lieutenant Chris DeLoach and Lieutenant Josh Little on their graduation from the Southern Police Institute s 80th Command Officer's Development Course! A graduation ceremony and luncheon was held on February 16, 2018, in Clermont, FL to honor the graduates of the 80th CODC, which was comprised of 49 officers representing 31 agencies from 4 states.

5 Girl Scout Troop 909 recognized the Titusville Police Department with a special appreciation basketful of goodies. The troop honors 1 business/government agency with a big thank you once a month. Titusville Police Chief John Lau was the Celebrity Chef at Chef Larry s Café located in historic downtown Titusville. Chief Lau lent his nearly world famous chicken parmesan recipe for all of the café s patrons to enjoy. The dish was beautifully executed by Chef Larry and his talented staff. Bon Appetit!!

6 Titusville Police hosted FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership training which included six supervisors from the TPD team. This training class is a cutting edge 4 1/2-day program built especially for first-line supervisors and middle managers with the goal of enhancing their leadership competencies.

8 Trails Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Dedication of Converging Trails, Friday February 23, ADOPT A TRAIL Community Development and Chelsea from Legal participated in Adopt-A- Trail Thursday in preparation for the ribbon cutting festivities for the Converging Trails Dedication.

9 FIRE DEPARTMENT On Saturday, February 10, Blaze the Fire Dog participated in the Mascot Marathon as part of the Florida Marathon Weekend. Blaze competed in a 100 yard dash with a dozen other mascots. He didn t finish in first place, but he won the hearts of the young runners with dance moves, high fives, and lollipops!

10 Valentine s Day was celebrated with a luncheon for Life Safety Specialist Kerri Lubeski as she was nominated by Imperial Estates Elementary as a Brevard Public School Partner in Education! The Titusville Chamber of Commerce held its annual celebration of businesses who support North Brevard schools throughout the year at Indian River Preserve Golf Club with a luncheon. The Partners in the Business of Education (PITBOE) program allows schools to nominate up to three businesses who ve dedicated time and resources to supplement the classroom experience. LSS Lubeski was honored to be recognized by Imperial Estates Elementary for their partnership in continuing education on the importance of fire and life safety. Driver/Operator Danny Ellis was awarded Titusville Fire Dept. Employee of the Month for January Driver/Operator Ellis was recognized for going above and beyond his duties in customer service. The nomination was not the result of one particular incident, but rather a series of actions taken over a variety of calls. Titusville Fire units, with assistance from BCFR, responded to a report of a structure fire at 508 Lucky St. on February 16 th. Upon arrival E12 reported heavy fire showing from the Alpha side. The fire remained defensive in operation due to an unstable sub-floor and compromised roof. No one was home at the time of the fire.

11 On Friday, February 16, Madison Middle School hosted the National No One Eats Alone Luncheon for all three of their lunch services. Life Safety Specialist Kerri Lubeski joined in for one of the lunch sessions. No One Eats Alone was created by Beyond Differences to encourage children to eat lunch with others they don t know and spot those who might feel left out. Madison M.S. invited local community members, church leaders and city/county leaders to join in to help teach and model inclusion. It was a very tasty and positive lunch.
