AWARDS DISTRIBUTION District Challenge Class awards will be presented at the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening at the Holiday Inn. All other awards (certificates and cash awards) will be mailed to exhibitors (including Judges) or may be picked up at the October Butte Rose Society membership meeting on Tuesday, October 27 th. Ribbons and Rosettes will be displayed on winning entries and must be picked up by the exhibitor when they remove their entries after the show closes and entries are released. In presenting this Festival of Roses for the Community, the Butte Rose Society gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of Our Divine Savior Catholic Church and the use of their Social Hall. 5

7 ROSE DISPLAY & GROOMING INFORMATION 1. Read and follow the Festival Guidebook carefully. 2. Complete TOP SECTION of the entry tag clearly and correctly. Names of all varieties of roses used in the entry must be listed on the entry tag unless class instructions indicate otherwise. Failure to do so can result in disqualification. It is suggested that exhibitors use a pencil rather than ink. 3. A winning Show Rose should be one half to three quarters open at judging time. 4. Stem length should be proportional to the size of the bloom. 5. Clean blossom and foliage to remove any debris, insects, fungi, and/or spray residue. 6. A spray is defined as a group of florets on one main or lateral stem with at least two or more blooms. ROSE FESTIVAL GENERAL RULES & INFORMATION 1. This show is organized, staged, and judged in accordance with the rules of the American Rose Society (ARS), as set forth in the Guidelines & Rules for Judging Roses. This is an alphabetical rose show and royal court classes will be judged in alphabetical order by the varietal name. Each variety shall constitute a subclass. 2. Festival judges are eligible to place entries in any class they are not judging. 3. To be eligible for entry, unless noted elsewhere, rose varieties must be recognized and listed in the most recent edition of Modern Roses 12 (book and online data base), Official List of Approved Exhibition Names for Exhibitors and Judges, Handbook for Selecting Roses and recent Rose Registrations on the ARS web site. In cases where a variety is not listed in any of the above ARS publications, a listing in the Combined Rose List is acceptable. 4. Exhibitors may submit entries as long as the specimens are grown outdoors in their own garden unless otherwise noted. 5. One person, or team, from the same garden may enter as many blooms in a class as desired, provided that each entry is a different variety. This means that only one specimen of the same variety can be entered from the same garden in the same class. 6. Entry tags and most containers will be provided by the Butte Rose Society unless otherwise noted in the Festival Guidebook. 7. No entry may be removed before release time (4:30 p.m.) or as announced on the day of the show. Removing entries early will result in forfeiture of all awards. 6

8 8. Rosettes and ARS Certificates will be awarded when merited. Only FIRST PLACE WINNERS are eligible for certificates and cash awards. In both the Horticulture and the Open Challenge classes, multiple firsts, seconds and thirds may be awarded, provided they are awarded to different varieties. 9. Climbing Hybrid Teas, Climbing Grandifloras, Climbing Floribundas, Climbing Miniatures, & Climbing Minifloras are shown in the same class as the bush form. 10. No one shall be permitted in the judging area during judging except those authorized by the Festival Coordinator. 11. Neither the Butte Rose Society nor Our Divine Savior Catholic Church is responsible for private containers, loss or damage to exhibits, or personal property of the exhibitor. 12. Wedging is allowed provided the wedging material does not protrude above the edge of the container. 13. Judges decisions are final. 14. Rosettes and certificates will be awarded if requested by the exhibitor as indicated on the exhibitor registration form. Complete one form per garden. 15. Entries must be placed in the showroom and exhibitor registration form must be completed by 9:30 a.m. the day of the rose festival. 16. Exhibitors may bring festival entries, props, educational displays, etc., Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Exhibitors beware! There will be no air conditioning in the Festival Hall overnight on Friday. 17. Exhibitors are encouraged to bring their own folding table, card table, chair, etc. for use as a work space in preparing their entries on Saturday morning. Some tables for exhibitor prep will be available on a first come, first serve basis. 18. PLACEMENT RULES. Exhibitors will place all Division I Section C Horticulture entries on the tables provided inside the entry foyer at the Festival Hall. A Placement Committee member will relocate the entries to their proper place. All entries in the following divisions will be placed by the exhibitor: Arrangements, Challenge Classes, Fragrant Rose Contest, Educational Display Contest, Judges Horticulture and Arrangements, Roses and Garden Art, Arts and Crafts, Youth, This Bud s For You and Display Roses Only. 19. No one but the exhibitor may touch or move any entry in the following divisions: Challenge Classes, Arrangements, Arts and Crafts, Educational Displays, and Roses and Garden Art. However, in special circumstances, if all efforts to locate the exhibitor have failed, the division chairs may carefully move entries. 20. Classes that state large roses (grandifloras, floribundas, shrubs, OGR s, climbers, and polyanthas) mean any class of rose other than a miniature or miniflora rose. 7

9 POINT SCORES FOR JUDGING HORTICULTURE SPECIMENS 1. Form Elegance, dignity, true to expected form; with well formed center and symmetrically arranged petals. 25 points 2. Color Typical of the variety. Shall include freshness, brilliance, and purity. 20 points 3. Substance Quality and quantity of matter in the petals. Substance comprises the texture, crispness, firmness, thickness, and toughness of the petals; and determines the degree of durability of form and keeping quality of the bloom. 15 points 4. Stem and Foliage Stem to be primary. Foliage should be clean and not damaged by spray or wind. 20 points 5. Size Should be typical of the variety; neither overgrown or undersize. 10 points 6. Balance and Proportion Overall appearance; bloom, stem and foliage should be harmonious. 10 points TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE 100 DISQUALIFICATIONS In accordance with American Rose Society rules, the following infractions may result in disqualification. 1. Misnamed, misclassed, misplaced by the exhibitor, unlabeled, or mislabeled. Roses ENTERED in the wrong class WILL NOT be moved to another class. Entries placed in the wrong class by the Placement Committee will be moved to the proper class and that class will be rejudged if necessary. 2. Stem on stem. (A specimen exhibited with a portion of the previous stem growth attached). Exceptions: Species, Old Garden Roses, and Shrubs may be shown stem on stem. 3. Presence of foreign substance applied to the foliage, stem or bloom to improve the appearance of the specimen. 4. Not disbudded. Any class calling for one bloom per stem specimens must be exhibited without side buds. A side bud is defined as growth emanating from a leaf axil having sufficient maturity to display the formation of a stem with or without flower buds. The presence of one or two leaflets or leaves at the leaf axil with no evidence of a stem is cause for penalization but not disqualification. An exhibitor may remove unwanted growth subject to possible penalization. 5. Any entry violating ARS rules or Festival show rules. 6. Appearance of the exhibitor s name anywhere other than the designated place on the entry tag. 7. Any rose that has been entered with a name that has not been recognized by American Rose Society will be disqualified. Roses are to be exhibited by the recognized ARS Exhibition Name (AEN). 8

Eligible for BRS Certificate & $15.00 Cash Award. Class 32 Bob Parker Trailing Rose Award One spray of a trailing type rose of any variety. Exhibited in an orchid tube, on a dinner napkin sized piece of black velvet fabric, lying on the table. Orchid tube and fabric supplied by BRS (limited supply) or furnished by exhibitor. Eligible for BRS Certificate & $15.00 Cash Award. Bob Parker, ARS Horticulture Judge, was instrumental in creating the original concept for this class. 23 DIVISION III FESTIVAL OF ROSES ARRANGEMENTS Rules and Information 1. Eligibility Everyone may enter arrangements in the show with restrictions as follows: Only residents of the NCNH District (Northern California Nevada Hawaii) may enter arrangement classes in Section A. Arrangement Judges judging arrangements at this show may only enter arrangements in Classes J13 & J14 listed in Division II Judges Division. Only Novices may enter classes 5 and Space Reservations Arrangement space must be reserved by 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 30, 2015 by contacting Arrangement Co Chair, Gwen Quail at (530) All arrangers must reserve space in advance. 3. Staging Standard designs will have 30 inches width and 24 inches depth for staging space, unless otherwise noted in schedule. There are no height restrictions for standard classes. Miniature designs will be provided 12 inches width and depth for staging space, unless otherwise noted in the schedule. Miniature arrangements may not exceed 10 inches in height, width and depth. Exhibitors are encouraged to provide their own freestanding backgrounds and/or underlays to be placed within the assigned staging space. Note: Black tablecloths will be used on the tables. 4. The following apply to all arrangements: a. All roses must be outdoor garden grown and must be of high quality. b. A rose or roses must be the dominant flower in each arrangement. c. The ARS Approved Exhibition Name of all roses in each arrangement must be written on the entry tag. d. AG must be written or checked on the entry tag if roses are arranger grown so that the entry will be eligible for a NCNH Trophy and ARS medal certificate, cash award, or rosette. e. One entry per exhibitor is allowed in each class, but an exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired. More than one exhibitor from the same garden may enter the same class. f. Accessories are allowed unless otherwise stated in the schedule. g. Flowers, other than roses and dried and/or treated dried plant material, are allowed unless prohibited by the schedule. h. A card of intent may be included with an arrangement to explain the interpretation of the theme or class title. i. An arrangement incorrectly placed will be judged in the class in which it is placed. j. All entries must be the work of the exhibitor. Advice may be solicited but no other person may help with assembly of the exhibit or alter an exhibitor s entry. k. No one but the exhibitor may touch or move an arrangement. However, in special circumstances, if all efforts to locate the arranger have failed, the arrangement chairs may carefully move the arrangement. 5. Infringement of the following rules will result in severe penalty: a. Painted or dyed fresh plant material and live creatures are not allowed. b. The use of plant materials on the state or local conservation list is not permitted. 22

24 c. The American flag or the flag of any country may not be used in an arrangement or as a decoration in any way. 6. Two causes for disqualification of an arrangement: a. Roses not outdoor grown (exception Section L) b. Use of artificial plant material 7. Arranger should mark his/her name on containers and accessories where it cannot be seen during judging. 8. Fresh plant materials should be well conditioned to maintain freshness of designs for the duration of the show on Saturday. Exhibitors should plan on replacing materials that will not be able to last unattended until the close of the show. Exhibitors must remove their materials/tools and leave the show room promptly when entries close. 9. Entry Tags will be provided for all arrangement entries and will be the regular ARS Arrangement Entry Tag. Completion of entry tag is the exhibitor s responsibility. The TOP SECTION of the entry tag must be completely filled out including names of all rose varieties used in the design. 10. Placement Arrangers must use the exhibit space assigned to them. Entries may be placed in assigned spaces on Saturday, October 3, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Props and accessories may be placed in assigned spaces on Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Arrangers are advised not to leave fresh roses/plant materials on Friday due to the fact that the air conditioning will be off all night. 11. Awards Presentation The NCNH District Arrangement Challenge Class Awards will be presented at the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening at the Holiday Inn. 12. Judging Will be in accordance with current 2006 Revised ARS Guidelines for Judging Rose Arrangements, Modern Roses 12 (book and online data base), Official List of Approved Exhibition Names for Exhibitors and Judges, Handbook for Selecting Roses and recent Rose Registrations on the ARS web site. In cases where a variety is not listed in any of the above ARS publications, a listing in the Combined Rose List may be acceptable. 13. The ARS arrangement scorecard will be used to evaluate all entries as follows: Scorecard for Judging Rose Arrangements Conformance (5 points per category) 15 points Naming of roses Conformance to type of design Other specific requirements of schedule Design (5 points per principle) 30 points Balance, dominance, contrast, rhythm, proportion, scale Perfection of roses & other plant material 30 points Creativity and Expressiveness 15 points Distinction 10 points Uniqueness sets the design apart, superiority in every respect: Includes Technical execution/construction Total 100 points 23

25 14. ARS Awards A first place design must score 90 points or more, a second place design must score points, and a third place design must score points. Only one first, second and third place ribbon may be awarded in each class. Honorable mention ribbons may be awarded at the judges discretion. To be awarded an American Rose Society higher award (District Trophies, Rosettes, Awards, and Certificates), an arrangement must score at least 92 points, and must be a first place winner. Awards may be withheld if no entry is worthy of an award. Judges decisions are final. In addition to the ARS higher awards designated for specific classes and sections in the show schedule, the following may be awarded: a. One set of ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for the highest scoring first place standard designs using fresh arranger grown roses from Classes b. One set of ARS Miniature Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for the highest scoring first place Miniature designs using fresh arranger grown miniature and/or miniflora roses from classes Other Awards A keeper award (cash) will be awarded to certificate winners. 16.
