1 1 National Institute for Agriculture Research INRA France 1104 Coordinator Jose QUERO-GARCIA meeting (WG2) Rootstocks and training system Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, REPORT meeting of the Working Group 2, named "Rootstocks and training system" was held in Trebinje, and was organised by the Faculty of Agriculture and the Genetic Resources Institute of the University of Banja Luka. In preliminary process of choosing a location for this meeting (Bordeaux, October 2014) between Belgium, Hungary, Bulgaria and Poland, the Project Management Board decided that meeting should be organized in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which can be considered as a great success for participants from the hosting country. Although it is common for the meetings of working groups within the Action to have less than 10 participants, interest in this event was very big (initially 23 participants), so the coordinator of the Action, proposed a new approach to the expenses refund, which did not affect the reduction of the final number of participants. A special visual identification was created (Annex 1 - Stylized cherry fruits and name of the city of Trebinje), which was visible in all operating and promotional materials during the realization of the meeting. The event was attended by 19 participants from 14 countries, who are participants of the action as well as 4 sour cherry producers from Serbia, one producer of cherry and sour cherry planting material and one cherry grower from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Participation of producers in Action meetings is not common, although it is highly desirable in order to popularize these activities. From all registered participants, only two participants cancelled, one due to health problems (Ales Vokurka - Croatia) and one due to transport problems (Diego Frutos Tomas - Spain).
2 2 During the arrival of the participants, there were many organizational problems with local transportation, given the fact that because of bad weather all flights to Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Tivat (Montenegro) were cancelled and redirected towards Split (Croatia) and Podgorica (Montenegro). There were 20 abstracts reported and submitted by the deadline, which are published in the Book of Abstracts. During the meeting 18 papers were presented as oral presentations, and were always followed by an adequate discussion (Annex 2 - The agenda of the meeting). The work in the meeting was divided into a number of sub-sections according to topics (rootstocks, training system). Each subsection was chaired by the Working Committee that was responsible for maintenance of the planned working schedule, but also for the discussion after the presentations. The majority of the reported papers focused on cherry rootstocks and examination of their characteristics in different environmental conditions (climate and soil). Besides the rootstocks there were also papers related to training system of cherry and papers related to rootstock multiplication in 'in vitro' conditions and analysis of the physiological status of the leaf mass depending on the training system. The main topic of the presented research was based on cherry as a species, while colleagues from Macedonia gave special attention to the 'Oblačinska' sour cherry, as one of the most important varieties in the fruit production in their conditions. More important conclusions that can be drawn after the realization of the meeting are as follows: - the dominant rootstocks in cherry production are those from Gisela group, where prevailing rootstock is Gisela 5; - in cherry production, depending on climate conditions, a significant role as a rootstock has mahaleb cherry, which is confirmed by some breeding programs based on this rootstock; - training systems in cherry are relatively new area (based on the length of research) in which there had been significant work in recent years, with still emphasised dilemma about most appropriate training system that could be recommended to the producers in a particular region; - regardless of general recommendations related to the characteristics of certain rootstocks, it is necessary to test each new rootstock in specific agro-ecological conditions, in order to obtain an answer to the question of the most appropriate rootstock for the specific locality. During the first working day, there was a press conference, which was attended, besides the organizers, by Dr. Nikita Fajt and Prof. Karoly Hrotko, who spoke about their experiences in the production of cherries in Slovenia, Italy, Hungary and China (Annex 3 - Information from the press conference).
3 3 In the final part of the second working day Prof. Dr. Florin Stanica presented EUFRIN network of research institutes and pointed out the fact that the countries of the Balkan Peninsula are not represented in this organization. As a former chairman of the association he supported the initiative proposed by Geza Budjoso from Hungary, to accept Miljan Cvetkovic from the Faculty of Agriculture as the Bosnia and Herzegovina representative in EUFRIN organization. Next EUFRIN network meeting is planned for November 2015 in Brussels, where this initiative should be confirmed. Within the field trip, the group visited the plantation of the "Popovo polje" company, where cherry orchards were visited and open discussion with company owner about the production of cherries in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Chile was held (Annex 4 - Photos from the field trip). In the tourist part of the meeting, visit to the wine cellar "Anđelić", winery "Tvrdoš" and church complex "Herzegovinian Gračanica" was organised. The social part of the meeting was completed with gala dinner at the restaurant "Motel Konak" with appropriate music, small gifts for guests and in a very pleasant atmosphere (Annex 5 - Photos from the side activities). Based on the s sent by the participants, it appears that the meeting was well organized in all aspects, to the special satisfaction of the local organizer. Organization of meetings with international participation is very demanding, but creates excellent conditions for connection with researchers from abroad and promotion of local production, but also promotion of cultural heritage of the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Banja Luka, February 24, 2015 doc.dr Miljan Cvetković
