This mission is carried out by: 1 Promoting the common business interests of those engaged in the industry. 2 Sponsoring educational programs and activities for members. 3 Enlightening consumers to the needs and advantages of home remodeling and maintenance, thereby improving the nation s housing inventory. 4 Recommending legislative and regulatory action which safeguards and preserves the remodeling industry and stimulates the marketplace.
3 President's message Take pride in NARI membership by Bob Malchow, CR For the past twelve months, it has been my pleasure to serve as president of Miami Valley NARI during a year of big changes, new directions, and innovations. Although the position of President is the most recognizable, no single person makes this association work. The successes of Miami Valley NARI is due entirely to the hard work and dedication, of the board of directors, the chairs and members of the various committees, the staff at AMC, and the membership of Miami Valley NARI. As with any team or organization, we are only as strong, as productive, Miami Valley REMODELER The Miami Valley Remodeler is published by the Miami Valley Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Offices are located at 136 S. Keowee St., Dayton, OH 45402, 937/222-NARI (6274) or FAX: 937/ PRESIDENT Bob Malchow, CR Malchow Building & Remodeling, Inc. VICE PRESIDENT Mike Kline Nation s First Mortgage Banc, Inc. TREASURER Ray Bell, CR Greater Dayton Construction Group, Inc. SECRETARY Bill Bilbrey, CR W.E. Bilbrey & Sons CHAIRMAN Bob Kracus, CRS Allied Services, Inc. DIRECTORS Brad Alexander All-Seal Home Improvement Jeff Hurst, CR Hurst Total Home Mike Fahrenholz, CR Quality One Construction David A. Flannery David A. Flannery, Architect Tim Garrison, CR, CKD Home Towne Construction Jeff Miller, CR, CLC J.T. Building Solutions, Inc. Carmen Urbieta Urbieta Construction, Inc. Malchow Building & Remodeling and as recognizable, as our individual members. Membership in a widely recognized and respected professional organization is not only a good marketing tool, it is an extremely good learning pool. It behooves each of us therefore, to become active supporters of NARI. Advertise your membership. Join or help out on a committee. Help plan, promote, and participate in activities such as the golf outing, Attend the new lunch meetings. Return surveys and questionnaires. Or you can call the NARI office to find out how you can help, or to offer your suggestions to make this an even better organization. Once again thanks to all who make this an organization that I am proud to be a part of. Have a happy Holiday and a wonderful New Year. As I suggested in my first column: Gee Involved! You may be surprised at what you ll lean. Six MVNARI members are on 2001 Top 500 list Six Miami Valley NARI member companies appear on Qualified Remodeler magazine s 2001 list of the Top 500 remodeling firms in the United States. Listed in the ranks of America s largest remodelers are Gilkey Window Company, Greater Dayton Construction Group, All-Seal Home Improvement, A.E. Fickert & Son, Inc., Buschurs Home Improvement, and Craftsmen Home Improvement. These Dayton-area companies are among 43 Ohio firms on the list. Nearly 10% of the nation s largest remodelers are Ohio-based, and more than 14% of Ohio s largest remodelers are Miami Valley NARI members. Nice people is a unique market Tired of clients who can find nonexistent flaws in the finest workmanship, or who reject every solution you offer to resolve a legitimate problem, or who find excuse after excuse to delay or withhold payment? So was Paul Eldrenkamp, Byggmeister Associates, Inc., Newton, Massachusetts. That s why he decided to focus his business on a unique niche market. Writing in the December issue of The Journal of Light Construction Paul, a member of NARI Eastern Massachusetts, reported that after 18 years in the remodeling business he has concluded that his niche is simply put, nice people. Working for nice people, he says, virtually eliminates bad debt, boosts crew morale, reduces callbacks, and improves referrals. Of course, the first step toward working this market niche is telling the princes from the frogs. Paul has some suggestions on this score. They start with discarding the attitude that you have to have every job, and include such often-neglected precautions as taking time to get acquainted with prospective customers before you submit a proposal. In the Miami Valley area we have about 1.2 million prospects to choose from. Remodelers who want to work for nice people can certainly find some, if they take the time to look. For more of Paul s tips read the entire article in the December JLC. JLC is one of the three or four magazines that are must reads for builders and remodelers. If you are not currently a subscriber go to or call No, we re not getting a kickback from Hanely-Wood! 3
4 Suppliers offer specials to MVNARI remodelers It s a dog-eat-dog world out there and we want your NARI membership to help you. One way is for our suppliers to offer you an incentive to use their services and products and for you to return the favor by recommending them to friends. It s a win-win situation. Recently we asked supplier members of Miami Valley NARI to offer something to other NARI members that would enhance the value of membership in NARI. The following have responded and we are hoping more will join the campaign. They will be listed in the Supplier Saver Section on the website; and the list will be updated as changes occur. Thank you, Alside, Bellbrook Chocolate and Nations First Mortgage Banc, Inc. for taking that first step. May we borrow from another quote, One small step for the contractor, one giant step for NARI. Alside Supply Center, a MVNARI member since 1995, located at 3361 Needmore Road,Dayton, OH 45414; (937) , fax: (937) offers 10% off the list price for fencing, siding, doors and windows. Contact is Tim Pietras. Bellbrook Chocolate Shoppe, a NARI member since 1999, located in the Crosspointe Center, 101 East Alex- Bell Road, Centerville, OH 45459; (937) , fax: (937) offers 10% discount on chocolate specialties for the discriminating contractor. A gable porch roof and a new carport spruced up this 1950s cottage-style home and earned a Residential Specialty CotY award for Hurst Total Home. This CotY-winning Residential Specialty project by Remodeling Designs replaced a deteriorated existing deck with an enclosed three-season porch and a new deck area that accentuated the lake house cabin look the owners wanted. For more Contractor of the Year photos, including many before and after shots, visit Brentwood Builders added an island and incorporated a small existing porch into the living area to create a more functional kitchen. The project was one of two to earn CotY awards in the $30,000 to $60,000 category. 5
6 CotY awards (Continued from page 1) Judges for the 2002 CotY awards were Al Wahle, AIA, professor of Architecture, Sinclair Community College; James Cummings, Dayton Daily News Home Section writer; and Steve Zimmer, CR, Ohio Valley NARI. Mike Seiler, Seiler Construction, Inc., was NARI Awards Chairman for John Stanforth Construction won the Commercial Interior CotY for a complete interior remodeling of the Clinton County Historical Society Building in Wilmington. More cabinet space, a greatly-enlarged counter area, and a unique granite spatter guard behind the cooktop are among the features of this kitchen project, which brought the Contractor of the Year award for Kitchens Over $60,000 to Remodeling Designs. Starting in January, Miami Valley NARI meetings will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Dayton Marriott. The first luncheon meeting will be January 23.
