O Connor worked for years under Andy Warhol on Interview magazine, was art director at the Harvard Business Review for nine years, then started HOME Miami and HOME Fort Lauderdale magazines in Florida. Hilary Lewis has written extensively on architecture and design, winning the prized AIA monograph of the year award, and has advised the National Trust for Historic Preservation as its prestigious Philip Johnson Scholar. O Connor Photos Lance Gerber By now, most readers of Tropic know a good deal about South Florida s specific take on Mid-Century Modern architecture and a bit about Southern California s version of design from that era as well. Through explorations of homes by Palmer & Krisel, Donald Wexler and E. Stewart Williams, Tropic has described ways in which architects on both coasts paid attention to climate, implementing stylish, passive cooling devices like deep roof extensions, brise-soleil shading elements and more. Beyond that, there are visual connections between the Florida Modernists and their California counterparts. We found a house showing these connections in Palm Springs, and although the home s original architect is not known, this 2,400-square-foot residence built in 1961 was just thoughtfully renovated by o2 Architecture. Led by architect Lance O Donnell, o2 revived this one-time beauty paying attention to what the original once was, and using that as a jumping off point to design what the home wanted to be going forward. For us in South Florida, this particular house evokes the work of Robert TROPIC: Can you tell us a little about the property s state when you were Hansen or Dan Duckham. The reason is its embrace of the post & beam first brought on board? style of building, a relative rarity here, but one that revels in the fabulous O DONNELL: The original owners children had taken possession of climates of both South Florida and Southern California. With undeniable this home after their mom s passing, and no one had lived in the home for roots in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, these post & beam homes were some years. It was barely visible behind the overgrown vegetation. What intent on opening up interiors and bringing the outdoors in. was visible to us was in poor shape, having suffered from deferred maintenance. Having a single owner for half a century, its earlier remodels were O Donnell, responsible for the partial redesign and back to the studs renovation of this Palm Springs home, spoke to us recently about the work. I m sure well intentioned, but were consistently poor. Nevertheless, Contributors include award winning photographers Robin Hill and Myro Rosky, illustrator Rollin McGrail and art editor Beth Rudin DeWoody. The magazine s frequent interviews with architects and designers allow these great talents to speak for themselves. The graphic look of the magazine is smart but slightly underground, in keeping with the spirit of the publication itself. From the matte finish paper to the crisp typography, TROPIC is in a category all by itself ---there is nothing else like it We planned it just that way.

3 76 TROPIC MAGAZINE AN INTEGRAL PART OF A REDESIGNED HOME for an artist and collector, this kitchen and adjacent spaces in Vero Beach by Massachusetts-based ACTWO Architects flow together beautifully, the open skylit work area transitioning to a dining nook, and that, in turn, to a comfortable family room. Although the spaces run together, they are clearly defined in a modular sort of way, each with its own identity, but carrying the common thread of matte white cabinetry holding them together. The kitchen is made inviting with teak panels clad to the front of the work island. This material shows up again in a sideboard, a row of storage cabinets that separate dining from family room and also as a tie-in material wrapping the TV wall and a raised soffit fitted with square, recessed lights. The counter material is Corian and was custom fabricated as a single piece to include a seamless, double sink. While the same material is used for the countertop with inset, black glass cooktop, the full-height backsplash behind is made from a single slab of striato olympico marble, balancing manufactured surfaces with natural ones. Dual dishwashers are integrated into the cabinetry in the work island and a counter-depth refrigerator/freezer is also finished in the same material with brushed aluminum handles, matching the cabinetry perfectly and managing to all but disappear. 28 TROPIC M A G A Z I N E From Atlas Homewares comes these A902-PS brushed stainless steel drawer pulls. Just as Debbie Tagging or writing, as subway graffiti was once known, blossomed under erased with a can of white paint, but messages that called out for our attention. Harry s Rapture and Grandmaster Flash s The Message were blasting from New York s gray skies. Artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat boom boxes, illegal and illicit works by artists like Rammellzee and Lee emerged as stars of that era, and luckily, as both were friends and collaborators Quiñones were beginning to be seen as not just something that needed to be with Warhol, I was able to see how they worked, up close. My husband, Peter, and I embarked on a journey last month to discover how the country s design tradition reflects the Swedish spirit.
